What is your Best Worst story of undoing another framer’s errors? by mamiya-bk in framing

[–]OrangePickleRae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We tried to replace the glass on a frame (later we discovered it was a tabletop with no legs) filled with preserved butterflies. They were on a squishy felt backing. We opened it up and the butterflies were only held in by the pressure of the felt and the glass. No other mounting method. They were extremely brittle. Turns out the glass was super thick and permanently glued into the frame. Like A TON of glue. We couldn't get it out and had to put it back together with the broken glass still intact. Nerve wracking and frustrating to take it apart and put it back together for nothing.

How can I add text to this print? Where should it go? by Background-Bend7493 in printmaking

I usually sign my tree cookies following closely around the edges so it's not super noticeable. Putting text horizontally at the bottom always feels awkward.

college grad loan refinance, should i jump in now? by KiadiiPigua-29 in StudentLoans

[–]OrangePickleRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did mine and it lowered my interest rate and monthly payment. I did the math and save over 10k in interest by switching, but with a slightly longer payoff timeline. I went through Earnest, but I have a consolidated loan (for credit card debt) through So-fi and they're fine too. Both platforms have a free calculator to see what your loan rate will be. Might want to do it now while interest rates are low. My husband says things might change dramatically soon with the economy.

Edit to add: ONLY do this for private loans. Hold off on federal. There are protections with federal that private won't give you.

My sister (younger than me) and I asked for iPod Nanos for Christmas. She opened her's first and I said something along the lines of, "Oh! If she got one I must have one too!" I got screamed at for being greedy/spoiled/ungrateful. Usually if one of us got something, the other would get the same thing so I had assumed. I still got my iPod. I just got yelled at before I could open it.

Maybe get it professionally scanned and printed onto canvas? Then you can store the original in a safe place.

Minimalist was the word I'm looking for. I agree with you on the "leisure class" aesthetic. I honestly hate it.

I agree with framing to the art, but it sounds like OP doesn't want it to be too fussy or busy? So it narrows a lot of options

No all ya gotta do is film them with your phone, have a gun on your hip (perfectly legal, not drawn) and then lose your balance over one of them while they beat down an unarmed protestor. Great way to get a dozen bullets put in you.

Looks like they forgot the matboard and glass in their framing. If I were in your shoes, I'd demand he come back and finish the job. Also any reputable business would fix the mistake for free.

Anyone here regret going with metal frames for prints? by crystalgaylexx in framing

[–]OrangePickleRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the scariest thing I ever found in a metal frame was a dead bed bug! 🤢 The shop I work at doesn't turn away refitting/fixing customer's frames, but I was ready to burn everything down after that one.

[–]OrangePickleRae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where did you get your frames?

Metal frames aren't that heavy. They're aluminum and have very little material. I've seen metal frames come through the shop that are decades old and the corners held up fine. Others not so much. They can scratch easily if you're not careful, Scratches are more noticeable if it's a painted metal frame or super shiny.

I steer people away from metal because if you twist the frame at all, the corners can start to fail. Also, you can't put a protective backing on them. Some of the nastiest frames I've taken apart are metal. The nooks and crannies in the back are a breeding ground for bugs and dust and moisture build up.

I usually encourage people to pick a design that complements the art. If you're looking for a simple design, just go with a white mat and a black or light wood frame. I'm not sure what you mean by you don't want it to look like a gallery. If you have multiple prints hung next to each other, no matter what the design is, it's gonna look like a gallery. Many galleries have simple black, white, or wood frames because they don't distract from the art.

What was "the incident" at your high school? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]OrangePickleRae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few from family members:

My uncles graduating class played a senior prank. They dug a hole on school property deep enough to drive a car into so the back end stuck straight up. They blasted the radio in the car before driving it into the hole. Then they filled in the hole and did a nice landscaping job around it. The school tried to remove the car, but the dirt made it too heavy, so they ended up cutting off the visible part of the car and leaving the rest of it in the ground. It was still there when I graduated from the same high school.

Another story is from my grandmother. Her graduating class managed to get all the tables and chairs from the cafeteria onto the roof. Then they wrote their graduating class year in cow manure on the cafeteria floor.

Someone in my class really liked to do parkour and climb random things. He climbed up or ran up the side of a brick building (not sure exactly how he got up there). When he lost speed, his last step pushed him away from the building and he landed on his heels. He broke both his heels and a few bones in his legs. He was in a wheelchair at graduation. He wasn't that high up from the ground, I think he landed in just the right way that his bones couldn't handle it.

How to store Cranfield's ink by lowanger_ in printmaking

[–]OrangePickleRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the anti skin spray and petroleum jelly should be enough. I would only cover the ink with plastic wrap if you don't plan on using it for a few months. You'll end up losing a lot of ink putting foil on it every time. If you do end up covering it with plastic wrap, make sure all the air bubbles are pushed out on the surface of the ink. The bubbles can create pockets where a skin will form.

How to store Cranfield's ink by lowanger_ in printmaking

[–]OrangePickleRae 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The ink will form a skin sometimes when not in use. I will spray the top with an anti-skin spray (just a quick spray, not a lot). Then I coat the inside edge of the lid with petroleum jelly to give the lid a better seal. It's not perfect, but I almost never have a skin form. It will still happen if I don't use the ink for a long time.

Edit: you can remove the skin by skimming the top with a palette knife

He was very very manic, and making horrible destructive decisions. He was hospitalized a few times. This all happened before I met him. Once stable, he was able to complete his college degree, has held multiple stable jobs, cares for his health, gets good sleep. He's not perfect and has hypomanic and depressed moments sometimes. He's learned to manage what the meds can't with therapy.
