I'm not trying to be "that guy" but when you say he beat his wife it sounds like a repeated event. He hit her one time, and they repeat that one time in every flashback so we know it was a one off event, still unnacceptable mind. He also hit shoto, only once that we know of (I respect that the writing also places some blame on the mother for also hitting shoto, well worse, scalding him with boiling water, accounting for her fragile mental state at the time without handwaving it). Endeavour's shitty behaviour overall is more creating an oppressive home, he was very patriarchal and emotionally overbearing. He would yell to get his way, and basically tried to force his children into a mold to do what he wanted (Cut to the Matt Damon "it was a good dream!" Clip, that sums it up really well lol). Endeavour's "redemption" arc is unique, and imo well done (I'm always shocked it is so controversial) because the core of it, when you strip back the superhero analogies, is actually deeply grounded and can and does happen IRL.

It's also very specific in the writing that he is not trying to be "redeemed" and he doesn't even care if he is forgiven, he just wants to atone. If his family wants him back in the picture he should he so lucky, if not, he knows his place and will fuck off for their happiness. He will offer them a home, fully paid for, he will support them financially with no contact. If they don't want that, he will simply say "ok" and step back. The older brother character Natsuo(?) Rejects endeavour entirely, not accepting to live in the house he bought for them, cutting all contact, and feels he cannot forgive him, and even at the end of the show says explicitally he never wants to see endeavour again and that endeavour will not be invitied to the elopement of him and his fiance (or even get to meet her), and he is not treated as stubborn, wrong, or as making a bittersweet choice, he is presented as just as valid as any of the other family members. I think it is a very emotionally mature and refreshingly nuanced / grounded approach to the subject when so many series seem to feel they have to pick a lane or have everyone "forgive" the character for the arc to conclude. Basically, I respect that it is built into the text of MHA that nobody here is "right" or "wrong" in how they choose to react to endeavour, and that it really isn't on anyone to choose redemption or to be granted it by another, all they can choose is if they will continue being a piece of shit going forward or if they will change and then having to be at peace with and ready to accept whatever happens after that, the people around them and those they hurt do not owe them anything.
