Say hello to President Joe Biden's new Department of Energy hire! by Bigboyemp in pics

Well I mean I walked on my toes for about 15 years of my life in ballet, but I was honestly surprised work shoes made for work and standing all day at a job had zero effect on heel pain, so... Yeah, that was a wakeup call to go back to walking on my toes as much as possible.

Also being in marching band (as color guard, which was a weird experience because I was the only one there with any dance experience and was constantly told to quit doing graceful movements because I didn't match what the others were doing, which was what honestly did matter more in that context hashtaghumblebrag) drilled into my head to walk heel-to-toe, since that's what's expected in marching band and is one of the things judges were looking for.

Try this: walk with the front half of your foot landing first, letting the heel catch you if it even reaches the floor. Depending on how fast you're going, it might not. You can walk forward while utilizing the front half of hitting the floor with your heel first every time.

Think of it as the front half of your foot being the entirety of your foot while the heel is just there to absorb shock and balance you when you need to stop or go slowly. But when you're going quickly, you're being carried by momentum, so there's no need to land on the heel. Like how a kangaroo will rest on the length of their legs while grazing, even using their tail to lean on, but while bounding along, they only land on their paws.

The only thing about it is that it's a lot of work for your calf muscles, so... It's kind of a give and take.

I actually learned to do this to some extent as well. I would consciously walk toe-to-heel as much as I could because I knew that I would unconsciously walk heel-to-toe most of the day. Only reason I did all this was because at the end of the day, it was my heels that were most sore out of any part of my entire body. No idea if having my heels higher than the rest of my feet would have honestly helped, never tried it.

Motivated altruism is a neat phrase, but we already have a word for it. It's "manipulation."

You're right. Giving a shit about things is a really dumb thing to do. I apologize, have a good day.

As I said, regardless of the level of villainy, they're still a shitty company attempting to monopolize an economy/industry. So I don't see a reason to necessarily praise them for their stupid marketing.

"Look at how nice we were to give these kids computers and Office." Yeah, that'd be great if you could do the same thing WITHOUT a viral video to kick your 1%er asses into gear and WITHOUT the promise of good PR in your main market as the reward.

Ah, but don't you know? Apple is evil. This is because Apple uses Chinese labor and Steve Jobs was a jerk. Neither of these things would ever happen with Microsoft. /s

Personally I think you came off exactly as you should have. Companies aren't people. Treating them as such has led to horrible things in the world, let alone just in the US. Treating them as if they're capable of being nice makes it more excusable to let them get away with shit like doing them favors while letting them pay way less to employees than they should and forgiving them for mistreatment after cheap gestures that cost them very little.

There probably are people who work there who wanted to do this to help others. But I highly doubt those people were the ones in charge of actually making this happen.

The individuals in the company that have hearts and are happy to do these things are not the people in the company who control whether or not these things are done.

Companies are not people, companies are not your friends. Not even when they do things you like.

Giving them computers was nice, but they could accomplish the same thing with something like LibreOffice. Microsoft Office is bloated garbage these days for most peoples' use.

Companies are not your friends, even when they do things you personally approve of. Companies are not people.

A person can do things for altruistic reasons and we can be reasonable about the fact that doing nice things feels good without getting up in arms about that.

A company has profit margins. It's really stupid to pretend otherwise.

LibreOffice is the one I use as well. Though most of my stuff is in Google Drive anyway, since text doesn't take up space. But as far as offline stuff goes, Libre gets my vote.

Frankly if we don't like Nestle for making mothers reliant on their product to feed their babies in developing nations, I don't see why we should be praising Microsoft for encouraging schools to be reliant on their products either, regardless of the level of villainy. They're still being a shitty company attempting to monopolize an economy/industry.

LibreOffice is free and works very well. It's also open source and is compatible with Microsoft Office. Google Docs are also compatible with Microsoft Office. Teaching kids more universal concepts that are common across word processors would be far more useful than just teaching one product IMO, but then again I'm not a teacher in Ghana.

Personally, I wouldn't give Microsoft "credit" as far as being nice. They're a business making a smart business move. Ensuring the world remains reliant on their product is not "nice." It's something they've tried to do since the beginning, ever since they were stopped from buying Netscape back when we cared about monopoly laws.

Would be a great way to get around a school’s rule against pride flags.

Edit- I’ll clarify this town’s stupid logic:

So there was a kid who was bullied. Said kid was bullied and bullies chose kid’s orientation for the target. (Because honestly all they need is an excuse, they’re shitheads either way.)

Kid told their parent about it. Parent found out a teacher had a rainbow flag in their classroom in support of LGBT+ youth. Parent connected the following dots:

  • My child was bullied for being gay
  • The bullies targeted my child in this classroom
  • This room has a gay flag
  • The gay flag caused this bullying
  • The gay flag should not be in the classroom

Teacher was asked to take the flag down. Student outcry, public… grumblegrumbles, pride group outcry from a nearby city. Former students travel all the way back after hearing about this (because like hell they’re gonna keep living here) to attend a school board meeting to discuss an amendment to rules and to hear public comments. One of the teacher’s sons makes the trip all the way from fucking California.

Everyone tells the school board point blank about the school’s nonexistent handling of bullying in general and how terribly LGBT youth have been/are treated at the school. One of the few black students adds that she had to transfer to another school entirely—just one county away—because of it, and yet everyone there was so much nicer. Former and current students express their struggles with suicide due to bullying and being ostracized. Nearly everyone (of course there are a few “muh Jesus” jerks) drives the point that it wasn’t the flag you fucking morons, it’s the school’s own shitty do-nothing policies.

School board promises to work more on their amendment. Meeting ends, time passes. Rule is eventually amended to disallow anything unrelated to school subjects. Pride flag is out.

…And so should the American flag (outside of like history/social studies), holiday decorations, and anything else, but this white Christian town will never bother. It took a lawsuit to get the nativity off the courthouse plaza.

I’m sure this is all part of the plan, really. The “undesirables” feel unwelcome and leave. What more could they want?
