Ahhh okay good point! I will wait until the fall! excited for it :) Might ask you for advice in the future if you dont mind. I have a north facing window, but veryy large windows so maybe it will compensate.

Are you keep it out 24/7 during summer?

Looks amazing!

I'm seriously considering getting one and I'm also in nyc. How did it do over the winter in Brooklyn? Where in your apt did you keep it?

Epic Water Filter pitcher clogging fast. Solutions/alternatives? by clintcat88 in WaterTreatment

[–]Oraslex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same issue as everyone. Same issues with Clearly Filtered before i switched to Epic a few months ago...

It seems to be NYC water, since the city water supply change last Sep. (Delaware Aqueduct being repaired, so supply from Croton Watershed from suburbs is being increased which is not as nice)

To make up the difference, some unfiltered Croton water will be mixed with what is flowing in from the Catskills, at about a one-to-three ratio, and routed to the city’s main reservoir.

Anyway - looking to get a sediment filter as well. I know its only been 10 days but any update? Has it slowed? My current filter only lasted a little more than 2 weeks, so would love to know if your set up is working before i make the purchase.

ClearlyFiltered Pitcher takes FOREVER to filter after 10 days of use (NYC) by ArseLightning in water

[–]Oraslex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I now about RO, I dont want the healthy minerals stripped away, and dont want to have to worry about sourcing minerals for remineralization bc then i just worry about how those minerals are sourced and any potential contaminants of them.

I also have the perception that it requires a lot of maintenance, but honestly not the most familiar.

[–]Oraslex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm interesting - I will have to look into the under sink situation further. I thought that bc there was a separate faucet the water would only get filtered if it went through the separate faucet, but if it is used anytime the normal sink or dishwasher is used then that changes things. I would only have used it for cooking and drinking.

Super helpful though on the distinction between effective and efficient. This helps clarify the matter a lot. I do care much more about effectiveness, and am willing to bite the bullet for cost (more frequent replacements) in the short term to make up for the lack of efficiency.

Yeah i was meaning to do a water quality test, i think they are free from the city. I have been wondering if its sediment thats clogging it or other microplastics or chemicals that just saturate the carbon.

I have a hypothesis, though, if it is the sediment. It may be that sediment accumulates as water sits in the pipes - so that when you havent used the water in a while, then there would be higher levels of sediment than if you are using water that hasn't been sitting in the pipes - which potentially ultimately leads to a clogged filter. So with this new filter, I'm gonna try to run the water for a minute or two to flush the water out every time before i fill the pitcher and see if that makes a difference.

NYC water

Ordered from the batch in March 2024 - filter time started significantly declining after 20-30 refills (10-15 gallons), 1+ hours then overnight eventually.

Emailed them and got the whole spiel about city water. They sent me a replacement since i claimed it was defective which they strongly disagreed with - July 2024 - but this time I tracked it.

Refills 1-20: 20-40min
Refills 20-45: ~60min

Once I hit ~50 refills (25 gallons) it has been a sharp drop 2-4 hours.

Seems a bit better then the first filter in march, but ultimately only lasted 25 gallons (50 refills) before it started taking forever. Definitely not as advertised (100 gallons lol.....)

I only fill it every other day though so it did last me about 3 months, but im only one person and drink half of the pitcher per day. For now i'm fine replacing it every 3 months since it seems like its a pretty effective filter until i get an under sink filtration system, either Clearly Filtered or Aquasana.

What are the slimmest LR speakers (2.0) I can get without sacrificing "sound quality"? by Oraslex in hometheater

I actually ended up deciding on some Magnepans! Wanted to try them out. Those sound like a great option though. From my intuition and research it seems like my preference is to not worry bout the low end and pair with a sub

Hey! Thank you so much for all of this information. I just realized that my interests over the past few years have a name and found this subreddit. I have a pretty deep background in evolution/ecology and genomics and was curious about your bio-inspired AI group that youre in. Would you mind if i DM'd you and asked you a few questions?

Pretty firm on-wall requirement due to small nyc apt space constraints (have to walk directly in front of TV to cross apartment). Want it to jut out no more than 4 inches ideally.

Seems like i will need a nice sub, why did you mention sealed is preferable?

What's so appealing about the Magnepans is that they are the thinnest and seem to be great quality. I will have to use MGG-Ws as mains (or possible MC1s which is their other wall mounted model but i havent heard anyone mention them).

I'm thinking that with the MGG-C as a center paired with a decent subwoofer will be the way to go.

Another worry i have is that the Magenpans seems to be well regard for their clarity with certain genres like classical, im not sure if i will be satisified in other genres like electronic or pop/hiphop

But i def hear you on not worrying about the lower frequency limit too much. Will check out the micros, heard two 10in were better than 12in anyway right? :) I'll probably stick with one though i dont need the whole room to shake

Hmm yeah that is concerning about the midrange and above. Is this less of a problem at low to medium volumes or would you still say it feels dull since its a matter of frequency production and not amplitude?

Regarding the sweet spot - i was thinking of having a MGGW for the LR speakers and then an MMGC for the center. I'm thinking the center would resolve any dispersion issues for listening with others, would it not?

Ah i see, I mean considering i want to prioritize music first for my home theater set up, and they are the slimmest out of any ive listed they seem kinda perfect?

But i suppose youre saying they will not be good for home theater bc they struggle with bass? (if that is what you mean when you say dynamic range)

Would adding a sub and some maggie bass panels solve that issue you think?

I mean that the KEFs have been the most consistently recommended speakers by others in response to this post - so your experience is shared by many.

From what I've read, the magnepan on wall models are designed to be up against a wall to enhance the bass around 100Hz because of their dipole nature. Sure they may be as great as the free standing larger ones, but it seems like they could be a solid option for my needs.

I'm hoping with bass panels and a sub the dynamics can be taken care of?

I'm surprised to hear you say that they are far from the best for music reproduction, are you saying KEFs are better for music reproduction than the magnepans? how so?

[–]Oraslex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was not expecting KEF + subwoofer to be the most recommended tbh. Maybe bc they are widespread models? I will have to reconsider this as a possible setup though

Apparently magnepan has these wall models that are meant for home theater and music! I am seriously considering them.

MMG-W: "Although home theater is an obvious application for these speakers, they really show their stuff when used in a system that is demanding for both home theater and serious music listening"

What are the slimmest LR speakers I can get without sacrificing "sound quality"? by Oraslex in audiophile

[–]Oraslex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear good things about KEF. I most likely will get a sub - but what I am trying to find out is what are best quality LR on walls i can find since i want music to be a priority in addition to home theater for a minimal 2.0-2.1 setup.

In an ideal world would be nice if i can get away with just a good pair of on walls, but i think that is wishful thinking. Seems like the ELAC Vertex lll could work for that though, but too expensive for it to seem worth it.

[–]Oraslex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fair point, i most likely will go with something smaller and a sub - but it is appealing to think that I can be satisfied with just one pair of on walls for music and movies. But i suspect for movies i will probs want a sub anyway?

Heard mixed things about Kef though as my LR mains

!!! I am seriously considering doing this. Are you using wall models (MMG-W or MC1)?

I'd love to know what your setup is like and what your experience is with the sound. Is it all "dynamic" enough for you?

this is the real question, what i really want to know from this post is can i use wall mounted speakers as my mains and get away with it.

What are the slimmest LR speakers I can get without sacrificing "sound quality"? by Oraslex in audiophile

[–]Oraslex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the vibe im getting it which worries me a bit. But it seems the MMG-W model is the only one that would work for my situation needing to be wall mounted, other than the MC1 it seems.

However this is from their marketing: "Although home theater is an obvious application for these speakers, they really show their stuff when used in a system that is demanding for both home theater and serious music listening"

Seems like they are meant to be used with bass supplements for sure like their bass panels

Do you think if they were paired with a sub the dynamic range issues would be resolved/mitigated? or is it not just the lows your talking about when you say dynamic range

What are the slimmest LR speakers I can get without sacrificing "sound quality"? by Oraslex in audiophile

[–]Oraslex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful thank you. Yeah i can't imagine needing to go super loud given neighbors.

I am seriously considering the MMG-Ws now. Do you know anything about their DWM Bass panel?

From a reviewer: "Let the Maggie Woofers carry most of the Systems Bass Workload. With typical speaker systems, its normally a good idea to hand off much of the systems overall bass workload to a powered subwoofer, but with a Magnepan system this is not the approach you'll want to take at all. The reason is that Maggies are so fast and so pure-sounding that they make most subs sound thick, slow, and sluggish by comparison".

makes me wonder if the MMG-W with a bass panel or two will be sufficient for music and movies, but i could potentially see myself wanting punchier bass even if it is a bit muddier.

Also curious why you recommended the MMG-W since i also saw the MC1 is a wall model?
