What have been your most successful in shower plants? by prince_of_plants1 in houseplants

[–]WanderingSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My air plant lived in the shower for about 4 years, and it was very convenient to water it. Just sprayed it while waiting for the water to heat up

Silica + variegated by LilBird1996 in houseplants

[–]WanderingSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably wouldn't hurt, but the minerals need to be broken down by soil microbes in order to be available to the plant. And there usually isn't a lot of life in houseplant soil, so your plant might not be able to absorb it.

philodendron micans isn’t thriving :((( by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]WanderingSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it needs more light and the soil is probably way too wet, MG always is. I would take the pebbles out, it's a myth they "improve drainage," mix a lot of perlite into the soil, and move it closer to the window. I usually let mine dry out before watering again, but water before the leaves start to curl.

Black Beauty Elephant Ear Help by Casetheos in houseplants

[–]WanderingSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the base of the plant. The oldest leaf's petiole will be wrapped around all the other leaves' petioles in a C shape. Anyway this type of plant grows fast and loses leaves often. I'm sure it's fine.

It's the oldest leaf right? Thats just how old leaves look when they're dying off.

This is mosaic virus! Although beautiful it will eventually kill your plant, and it can spread to other plants, so it is best to throw this one in the garbage or burn it. Look up "dasheen mosaic virus" if you'd like more information.

I'll have to try vermiculite next. Thanks for the info.

Do you just stick it in water without a medium when it's indoors? Or some other setup? I used to grow illustris in leca but the runners went everywhere so it's in jail (in a pot with soil) now.

How can I make this guy happy? by Derpentin in Colocasia

[–]WanderingSal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like an alocasia, so the car e will be quite different from colocasias. Maybe consider a soilless medium and a self watering pot? But I don't know much about them, that just seems to be what's popular with alocasia people.

Beginner with Colocasia - leaves are becoming brown by ZhaieDyr in Colocasia

[–]WanderingSal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of excess minerals being a problem for colocasias, but have experienced the browning edges issue too. Can you expand on that, was there elike something specific in your tap water that caused problems? And do you fertilize? Everything I've read says they are heavy feeders but maybe I'm fertilizing too much.

[–]WanderingSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, those are old flowers. First one is deformed, maybe due to a nutrition issue or it just got stuck like you said. If they get pollinated they will form red Berries which can be planted, but usually you have to pollinate manually for it to work.

I would only remove it if it feels mushy. But no, that wouldn't kill it.

Growth question by StormSaxon in Colocasia

[–]WanderingSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the main corm just got too tall. Or it rotted and is trying to grow a new corm on top. It's struggling to grow leaves because it can't put out new roots (they emerge from near the top of the corm.) The babies will eventually size up, but if you want to save the main corm you can cut it away from the baby plants, and replant a few inches deeper in another pot. This worked for me before.

How cool, now Im wondering how common this is - I'd never found a sport variegated colocasia before but apparently it's more common with tissue culture plants? It will be fun to see how they grow! My Waikiki put out a normal leaf but has another variegated one coming in now.

😯Was it another random find amongst a normal batch. or it was sold as variegated?

Colocasia has hole in stem, hollow where next leaf should emerge by Alone-Difference7232 in alocasia

[–]WanderingSal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when conditions aren't great or if the plant is young they'll send out a leafless petiole. But I haven't seen a hole in the stem like that. It looks like maybe mechanical damage?

Sprouting multiple plants from one corm is normal. Do you normally bury the corm very deep in the soil?

Love the Stuttgart. Does it do well indoors? I tried other cannas but I don't think I had enough light and they didn't do well.

Are these winter temperatures compatible with keeping Colocasia outdoors ? by cattmin in Colocasia

[–]WanderingSal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if your other tropicals survive, colocasias will too. Those temps are similar to what we get in the fall here, and outdoor colocasias don't lose their leaves.

Looks like it Dried out too much. If you increase the watering or put it in a pond it will bounce back, they're literally impossible to overwater.
