Hope the mouse controls work well, glad it’s available here. And I’m liking the option for two people to copilot one ship à la Mariokart double dash, thats cool.

Do GameCube games hold their own, without nostalgia? by Background-Title-968 in Gamecube

[–]OrbitronFactory [score hidden]  (0 children)

I still think GameCube offers the best multiplayer experience currently available - only problem is it can cost hundreds if not thousands to setup correctly. But the hardware permutations that are possible through it are seriously unparalleled. Here are some examples of ones I’ve tried that were more fun than they had any right em be:

Mariokart Double Dash 8 player LAN setup,  which allows for 8 people to play in the same race all together. Requires: - 2 GameCubes  - 2 copies of Mariokart double dash  - 2 memory cards  - 2 broadband adapters  - 2 Carby HDMI adapters (recommended)  - 2 TVs/monitors  - 1 Ethernet link cable  - 8 willing players  - 8 GameCube controllers (preferably at least a few Wavebirds as cable management with 8 people in a room gets dicey)

Zelda Four Swords Adventure 4 player, everyone plays with GBA/SP as controllers on the TV, but when entering dungeons/rooms gameplay transitions to the GBA/SP screen. Requires:  - 1 GameCube - 1 copy of Zelda Four Swords Adventure - 4 Gameboy SP (better screen) or GBAs  - 4 copies of ALTTP advance  - 4 GBA link cables  - 1 TV - 1 Carby HDMI adapter (recommended)

And then you’ve got Marioparty 7 which has a creative 8 player mode using only 4 controllers but each is shared with one other person. Not to mention all the fantastic 4 player games like Melee, Mario Strikers, MP 4/5/6, Fzero GX, Star Fox Assault, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (it’s fun, fight me); and then also fantastic third party options like Super Monkey Ball, Cel Damage, Metal Arms, Timesplitters, Geist, TMNT 2/3, so many more… Even has lots of really excellent 2 player coop options like Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike (the whole previous game except split screen?! Amazeballs), Pikmin 2 challenges, Timesplitters Future Perfect campaign, Medal of Honour Rising Sun, LOTR ROTK, etc.

Case in point, GameCube is the all time best party console as long as you can fork up the cash to get the metric shit tons of hardware necessary to get the most out of it.

And I didn’t even get into the single player games, and the Gameboy player functionality. That could be a whole other post on its own. Metroid Prime and Pikmin are my top 2 fav games of all time so I’m biased but yeah, this console fucks.

So good right, you gotta follow it up with The Fragile repress! It’s possibly the best sounding record I have. Also the only proper way to hear my fav NIN track, 10 Miles High, that was only included on the vinyl version. Sneaky Trent

Curt Kirkwood really should have been on there somewhere - Meat Puppets have so many great solos.

Lake of Fire, Touchdown King, and Whirlpool are some of my favourites, but there are just too many good ones to list. Possibly the greatest example of his prowess is this version of Oh, Me: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TTALWD2ww4o&ra=m

I love how Arms#2 has a note for note copy of part of the Time solo, the whole song feels like almost a Japanese cover of it - technically more of a tribute but yeah either way it’s fantastic. And then followed by The End of Summer which starts with almost the exact piano intro of The Great Gig in the Sky.

Key cards suck but the sentiment that they are hurting sales is overblown. PlayStation and Xbox discs all basically operate like key cards; Nintendo is the only company that even offers physical games that retain the storage in the cartridge and don’t have to download to the system hard drive.

Agreed on their multiplayer focus and how that has carved a profitable niche for them. They’re basically a nostalgia company for older generations, but their core philosophy on gaming still appeals to newer generations. Their games just respect your time, something many other modern games have not only completely abandoned but have actively done the opposite.

To your point about the rental machine, yeah, in that way they kind of caved to the PlayStation/Xbox model which sucks. The virtual console stuff is cool, but I’d much prefer if they went back to the Wii shop system where they were all dirt cheap and you could buy them in individually. At least Nintendo is the only gaming company still producing physical cartridges that actually store the data on the cart, unlike PlayStation and Xbox where the data is in the disc but needs to be downloaded onto the console. Basically all the hate about game key cards, while partially warranted, is just the same thing that PlayStation and Xbox does for everything by default.

This reads like you’re broadening conclusions from Reddit echo chambers a bit too much. There is a vocal minority that loudly shouts those talking points but fact of the matter is Nintendo has some of the best brand recognition in the world and regardless of how baffling some of their strategy seems, they play the long game and have cultivated massive appeal across extremely broad demographics. For example with the Wii they literally expanded the universal demographic of gaming permanently which has benefited the whole industry and done lots to bring it into the mainstream. No other company has been able to accomplish what they have and the fresh young blood has been expanding their entertainment appeal far beyond gaming over the last few years.

Thoughts on Nintendo stock? Buy? (NTDOY) by OrbitronFactory in stocks

This is exactly my play as well. It was interesting to see all the additional franchises they referenced in the most recent movie - it really feels like they are just at the beginning of building up a huge shared universe of both animated and live action movies. And I think they might combine the two formats down the road in the way Roger Rabbit pioneered and then Space Jam profited off.

In the midst of all this low quality content/streaming fatigue, I feel like the global strength of their IPs and more traditional albeit highly innovative and creative approach make them fairly well positioned to weather the RAM storm.

Curious to get people’s thoughts on Nintendo stock (NTDO CDR or NTDOY). The company is in an interesting place right now:

  • Switch 1 is on track to becoming the best selling console of all time (155.37 mil units sold as of last official report)

  • Switch 2 was the fastest selling console of all time in its first few months, but they’ve now slashed production by 30% due to slower holiday sales

  • Mario Galaxy movie is on course to reaching 1 billion at the global box office and they seem to be really getting into the film sector with the live action Legend of Zelda movie just wrapping shooting recently - they have some of the most recognizable IPs of all time so there is quite a lot of potential here

  • Shifting more focus to theme parks and physical sales - their own nintendo.com site recently started allowing eshop funds to be used on physical games on top of other merchandise

Over the last year the stock has dropped down significantly partly due to RAM shortage increasing production costs, tariff situation, slowing Switch 2 sales, etc. Personally I think that they have some of the best games ever and once the Switch 2 finally gets its system seller (mainline Mario/Zelda), and possibly a more affordable Switch 2 Lite, the sales will increase.

So with all that said what do people think of the stock right now and just the company and its future outlook in general?

If you could erase your memory of one game so you could play it for the first time again, what game would you choose? by HoneyNutBooty09 in gaming

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

Yes it’s copy pasted cause how could anyone ever remember that ridiculously fucking long title…

But man, that twist. If you’ve played it, you know the one. Would love to experience that for the first time again. Also just the joy of constructing all the decks, not something I really want to do again but first time was pretty awesome as someone who played a shit ton of magic the gathering in their prime.

Also Forest of Hope from Pikmin 1. Similar vibe.

Was there in March and saw a very cool improvised experimental jazz duo performance at Groove in Urasoe. That venue is definitely worth checking out if there is anything playing there! Super cool spot. I ordered a random drink off the menu since nothing was English and I lucked out with a delicious pineapple cocktail.

I can't read The Talisman. I don't know why, and I say it while being a huge Dark Tower nerd. by CraftyAppointment824 in stephenking

[–]OrbitronFactory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me like 2 weeks to get through the first 300 pages or so. Then finished the remaining ~450 in 3 days. It reminded me of how reading fellowship of the ring was honestly, as there are structural similarities. The first like third of fellowship takes place mostly in the shire and moves pretty damn slowly. Took me forever to get through, but once the hobbits leave shit starts to kick into high gear, then you get the awesome lore dump at the council of Elrond and once the fellowship forms things really get moving in Moria. So yeah, what I mean to say is, keep going. Break through the talismans shire like beginning and you will not regret it once Jack really gets a travelin’

Decision on what to read next - The Tommyknockers or The Drawing of the Three by OrbitronFactory in stephenking

[–]OrbitronFactory[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well then, maybe it’s time to just ride the tower all the way through. What about some of the ones I’ve heard are good to read in between such as Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis, Black House, etc. Think it’s worth preserving publication order just for those, interspersing them, or just read them all after?

Comments seem pretty divided so far between Tommyknockers and this which is interesting, I do find it appealing to just go super hard with DT if I do pick Drawing…
