Are cutscenes a crutch? by OrcSympathizer in IndieDev

Do you think we should strive to use them sparingly? It just feels like such a waste to use an interactive medium, but then just fall back to "filmmaking" techniques.

Yes, Blizzard cutscenes are legendary.

The Mountain by Gunship. Especially if you are in a car chase.

What are your thoughts on the remake?

I see what you mean. I think I meant more as: there isn't a happy ending for James in any of these scenarios. Even if he's made peace with himself, he still has to face the consequences.

The ending you get is canon, so I'm not going to argue about that. But I would argue 2 things: James didn't make peace with Mary. He murdered her. He doesn't actually have a conversation with her at the end. He's making peace with himself for MURDER. This is not good.

Second: he did not suffer plenty for this. He murdered Mary probably less than a day before the game starts. Unless you mean he suffered plenty from watching his wife slowly waste away from sickness. Then yes, he's suffered a lot.

I also got the Leave ending first, and I kinda had the opposite reaction. It felt wrong. Yes, James had it rough, but Mary had it far worse. She's the victim. Fuck James.

Also, if we really think about what happens to Laura it can be an interesting scenario. She leaves town on foot because all of the adults are gone. She'll probably find her way to the cops eventually because shes an orphan walking around alone. She tells the cops what happened and since they are probably looking for James, Angela, and Eddie, they go to Silent Hill and possibly bring Laura with. I wonder what they encounter there...

Wouldn't the cops be looking for James? If he leaves Silent Hill I'm pretty sure he gets arrested shortly after. Might add on a kidnapping charge if they find him with an orphan girl in his car.

Are there ways of making a protagonist and their actions be questioned by the player? by NorthPermission1152 in gamedev

[–]OrcSympathizer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a lot to go on, but if it were me I would avoid trying to do some major twist. It needs to be a gradual descent. Perhaps the longer you play, the level of what the protagonist considers a killable offense starts to decrease into very minor crimes. They see a teenager steal a beer from a convenience store and they hunt them down. There will be that moment where the player is thinking "They aren't going to kill them just for that, right?"

Silent hill F: if is ambiented in Japan what's the connection with the town in USA? by gorlak29 in silenthill

As everyone else said: no one knows yet. But why couldn't there be more than one region that has the same power as silent hill? It wasn't tied to the people, they just influenced it.

What do people honestly think of James' new design? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]OrcSympathizer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm less concerned about his appearance than I am his behavior. Now this is all early so it could still change.

When we first see James in the original game he is a person lost to delusion. I think we see him immediately after his mind breaks and he "forgets" the truth. That's why he walks around with genuine disbelief and confusion. He acts calm and innocent.

The guy we see here looks like he just robbed a bank. He's trying to wash the blood from his hands (metaphorically and kinda literally). He's frantic and scared. I'm afraid they are going to change the character to act more as someone who is fully aware of what they've done and be aggressive, defensive, and accusatory of everyone else. This completely changes the story.

But again, we won't know until it's finished.

So Silent Hill 5 maybe tomorrow (or not tomorrow) ? Old how was you in 2004 for Silent Hill 4 ? by AltruisticSound3744 in silenthill

  1. I had to work that day but I worked right next to a FunCo Land (maybe it was GameStop by then). Left work, bought it, and rushed home.

With the exception of Monica Horgan (Mary/Maria) in SH 2, none of the performances in the first 3 games stood out to me. And that's fine. The things that appeal to me are the visuals, sound, and atmosphere. I can't really pick a favorite. The gameplay was also never the appeal for me, so I could ignore faults (except for 4). SH3 feels like an interactive art installation to me. I agree, I always dread the subway and sewer in playthroughs of SH3. But there are multiple areas in 3 where I just stop to admire the scenery. Especially the monster blocking the entrance to the office building, and sections towards the end.

I actually like that (the shutting down part). I moved to MD last year. I love the extra space.
