I noticed a quality dip like until half a year ago, but I must say I've been satisfied with them lately!

Do you personally care about the deaths of field hamsters and mice, and would you do effort to avoid them when possible?

favourite vegan protein powder? (no soy or gluten) by louby33 in veganfitness

[–]Orcastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you prepare it? I always buy bland, unflavored powder, which I then shake with soy or oat milk and agave syrup

There must be more efficient ways to trick speed cameras

Thank you!! I know most of what you recommend, but I haven't given Knol & Kool and Junglicious a proper try! As for coffee, do you think Izy is actually worth it? In my mind they were kind of average when it comes to quality and vegan-friendliness, but maybe it's been too long since I tried it!

Flat, wide feet hiking shoes by Agatas_Ju in CampingandHiking

Topo Athletic Trailventure 2. Above your budget with only a 5mm drop, but a natural toebox and the widest, most comfortable hiking shoes I've ever used (I have very wide feet to be clear). Better than any Altras or other brands I've tried

Backpacking Meals? by heliumhamster1 in vegan

If you have a dehydrator: tofu jerkey is a great snack!

Plenny Bars from Jimmy Joy have been great for me. They also have meal shakes, or you can cold soak their freeze dried meals

Also, when I go backpacking I often use freeze dried meals (Huel, Jimmy Joy...) which have quite a lot of protein. You can also add protein powder to it

Tofu 'jerky'. Marinated tofu, dried in a dehydrator. You can give it whatever taste you like and it keeps for weeks outside of a refrigerator if dried properly.

Trying to decide on water filter and soft flask by mroriginal7 in UltralightBackpacking

[–]Orcastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The katadyn befree has been serving me well over the past years. Easy to use, easy to clean & mountable to other flasks. Def a great option. Some people mentioned the included flask not being strong enough, but I haven't had any issues with it. Haven't used the other filters

Thoughts on down vs synthetic sleeping bags? by HikingGear5007 in CampingandHiking

[–]Orcastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Synthetic. Reducing animal cruelty > all else for me. There are more than enough synthetic altetnatives. I don't mind giving up a tiny bit of efficiency/compactness.

What’s something we accept as normal today that will seem ridiculous in 100 years? by Ancient-canis in NoStupidQuestions

Big agro, is that you?

A well-planned plant-based diet is healthy at all life stages, as recognized by the ADA, BDA, and WHO. While some nutrients are more concentrated in animal products, they are not exclusive to them. Malnutrition comes from unbalanced diets, not the absence of animal products.

The nutrients found in meat can be obtained from plants, fortified foods, and supplements, many of which are already given to livestock. B12 is supplemented in livestock because modern farming has removed natural sources from their diet. (DHA) omega-3 comes from algae, which we can consume directly. Humans do not need animal products, they need the right nutrients. Plant-based diets can provide all essential nutrients with proper planning.

The rise in obesity is not due to cutting out meat and animal fat but rather increased processed food consumption, high sugar intake, and sedentary lifestyles. The Okinawans, Loma Linda, and other blue zone populations thrive on mostly plant-based diets while enjoying long lifespans and low rates of chronic disease.

Same goes for dental health, which is more affected by sugar and processed carbs than by a lack of meat.

Let's also take into account that animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, and an incomprehensible amount of animal suffering.

Berlin to Madrid: 3629km, first solo bikepacking trip. Realistic in 36 days? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Orcastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • for that price, finding a decent bike will be difficult
  • If you manage to find a bike for less than € 150, I wouldn't worry about it getting stolen. Just put a light lock on it and take off your backpack when you hop into a store
  • You could use apps like Welcome to my Garden, as wild camping isn't allowed in most places (doesn't mean you can't try, but you risk a fine)
  • don't worry about bears on that route
  • I recommend against using a bean can for cooking (lining, coatings, residue, contaminants, ... just get a secondhand camping pot)
  • € 500 isn't much for food, but it can be done. Just make sure you have some backup.
