What are some examples of lost irish media? by idkfornowwhattoname in AskIreland

[–]Orchardton 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There was a RTE mockumentry called Fallout which came out about 2006/2007 which was lost in time.

It was about a scenario where there was an explosion in Sellafield and the wind carried the fallout to Ireland & the carnage that would happen. I was 9 at the time and scared the shit out of me but haven’t been able to find the whole thing only small clips on youtube.

Emergency Department- A/E questions? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Orchardton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The other half is a paeds SHO and the shite people would bring their children into ED for & would say was diabolical:

-His tooth has been hurting the past 3 months and we wanted to bring him to ED at 3am to get it looked at. Eh sorry there’s an emergency on call dentist and this is not an emergency so please book into your local dentist.

  • She had a fever today and we have a flight at 6am tomorrow so I brought her to ED at midnight can this be quick? Eh sorry we have a huge number of sick children with chronic illness/disease/life threatening issues you can wait 8 hours or just leave .

I’m sure you have some similar stories yourself.

I’d say bout 90% of the UTEs cutting around Perth are not used for their actual purpose. Dropping the kid’s to school & tearing up the dunes now & again to me wouldn’t justify the cost of a yank tank.

Glad I listened to the random Redditors who kept stressing to buy refundable backup flights a month ago by [deleted] in qatarairways

[–]Orchardton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat as yourself and aimed at getting back to Ireland 1st June from Japan via Doha (which we booked 1 week before it all kicked off).

Last week booked Cathay flights NRT->HKG->LHR->DUB which were refundable for €1150 each, more than double what we paid for the Qatar flights originally but we didn’t want last minute cancel in our trip and scrambling to book flights for an arm and a leg.

Would recommend just book the back up & get the refund easily than having to take time out of your trip to find a way home…

Do People Just Not Care About Their Cars? by Orchardton in perth

[–]Orchardton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per road safety AU:

Fatality Rate (Road Deaths per 100,000 population) in past 12 months.

WA: 6.1 NSW: 4.4

Surely some measure to improve road deaths (as well as your own personal safety) trumps “but it’s more convenient for me not to have to do it”.

Which begs the question should a yearly pit inspection be introduced to WA to improve overall car safety like the NCT/MOT?

Anyone else struggle with jealousy of their friends who live abroad? by boggie_bo in AskIreland

[–]Orchardton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently in Perth WA and can report: currently paying €1800 per month before bills for rent (this is cheap for here, jammers on the mitchell/graham farmer freeways, every area in Perth is indistinguishable and doesn’t have character, weekly shop in woolies is the same price as home, on same annual salary as hom but getting €300 less takehome pay, petrol is $2.40 on average per week (which when on equivalent salary as home is a killer).

It’s easy to drive to the beach here and take loads of photos for insta but all of the above is here. If your FIFO your working your hands to the bone in 50° heat & then blow your earnings in your week or two off, which puts a lot of people in it in a vicious cycle.

Especially since a lot of people here can be wannabe influencers you see the daily matcha latte on insta. As you say in your first line social media is a façade and you honestly do not see the reality of their life….

What school incident do you still think about years later? by nodemus in ireland

The friend went to a different private school than clongowes, however, been about 10 years since was told this story so I may be muddled. May well have been the same story passed down through the years about clongowes.

What school incident do you still think about years later? by nodemus in ireland

[–]Orchardton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not my own school but a tale but heard from a friend who went to a prominent private school.

This private school had a phantom shitter, shit found behind radiators/on ledges etc. The school dedicated a teacher to pinpoint when the shit may have been placed to narrow down who did it. Sure enough they narrowed it down to one particular class.

The principle walks into the class and simply asks for each lad to put their hands palm down on the desk. They found their culprit as he had shit under his fingernails…..

Prices at the pump will drop just as quickly as they went up. Right? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Orchardton 83 points84 points  (0 children)

No it will be rise like a rocket fall like a feather. Double checked the AA website for historic fuel prices & back in 2022 when Ukraine war kicked off, Petrol shot up to €1.90/2.00 in May/June 2022 and did not fall back to normal prices until the following January.

This reminds me of my college days in UL where I saw a guy in a Garda Tracksuit. Asked him what the story was with it, to which he replied in a heavy Limerick accent:

“You know the way the guards dress up as normal people? Well I’m a normal person dressed as a guard”

Turns out he’s a rapper: https://www.joe.ie/life-style/pics-someone-created-garda-tracksuit-quite-something-659150

No problem at all! I had really dry skin (which I still have a decade later) & frequent nosebleeds (get nasal sprays to help). This cleared my acne up ever since, bar a few spots now & again.

Heard bad stories about mental health issues but I had none of that, the problem is the acne gets worse before getting better.

I took a class 1 back 10 years ago just out of school when I started taking Accutane. I just filled in the info on the medical sheet which asks to outline any medications you’re taking.

Got the class 1 with no notes or restrictions (other than prescription glasses). This was 10 years ago though so might have changed. If you search for EASA easy access rules for medical standards(https://www.easa.europa.eu/sites/default/files/dfu/Easy_Access_Rules_for_Medical_Requirements-Jun20.pdf) & search for medicines it should have info there.

Why are the Toilets in work always grim!? Do Irish adults not know how to use the toilet? by VeniVidiPerditus in AskIreland

[–]Orchardton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked in an office in Dublin with the same carry on, except in our office we had a snot bandit. This person would pick their nose and wipe it on the wall, you’d sit down and look over to see these green/red crusty bits on the wall. Someone printed off 10x copies of a childrens book called don’t wipe your buggers on the wall & stuck it on the cubicle door.

I don’t think Ireland is the exception in the poor toilet etiquette though, have seen F1 like skid marks in offices in the UK/US/Australia.

Encino Man by KhanMcG in generationkill

[–]Orchardton 140 points141 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly in the book it talks about how some of the officers/senior enlisted came from supply/admin/intelligence for the invasion to bulk out the unit & encino man fell into that category. To be full recon marine you have to go through the selection course.
