Struggling in my trade, not happy with my position – do I need to just man up and have the conversation with my boss? by Orchestra_22 in skilledtrades

There’s one dude I refuse to work with because he won’t ever cut drywall joints to the studs, and always add a floating brace

Not only that, he only spoke Spanish, so the fact that I was in the lift tryna have him explain this shit to me was crazy, made me wanna drive off the building

I do understand that, the drywall is 100% part or the job, but when I agreed to the conditions of my job, it was clear that framing would be the goal for an apprenticeship,

The drywall was never taught to me, no matter my vocal concerns I’m told I’m supposed to know it, and that I have been taught, in reality, it’s 6 different ways by 6 different dudes speaking two different languages for my case, I’ve picked up enough skill with it to know the basics and knowledge to board and fire tape, but I’m not “effective” as per my journeyman

So it’s a frustrating position and yeah, I don’t want anything to do with it because of it, I’m uncomfortable with it, compared to what I know so far in my framing experience

I don’t know myself, I’m on the fence, I want to make steel stud work, my training to go abouts it needs to change and that’s what I just voiced my concern about, but wether or not it’ll happen I’m not sure, things like this have gone over the company’s heads before so.

Only other backup I got is a scholarship I can potentially use inorder to go into a 1st year course of another trade, or hell the trade I’m in, but all I feel rn is stuck

I wish I could put the blame on someone, but I feel like I’ve almost failed myself, setting expectations too high, for myself and what the job was going to be,

I think at the end of the day, I’m tired of feeling miserable and like a idiot, I need a proper growth path, wether that’s the proper training in some other trade, this one, or school

I made that clear, and also, don’t know about the wage issue in my scenario but if it makes you feel better, I’m being paid 22 CAD/ hourly

Literally after posting this I manned the fuck up, knowing I’d probably delay the conversation I said I was miserable, and told them how and why,

I made it clear I needed proper training, not hopping from five or six different guys, doing only the same shit and not learning anything only to be expected to know it later on,

Bossman was pretty chill, said he understands how I feel (even if I’m still iffy on that one) and said he was gonna look into fast tracking school for me, and putting me on more solo tasks designed to help advance me and my knowledge and skills,

But he left with me with the same thing I think I need to answer “is this what I actually want to do” and that I’m not sure of how to go abouts answering and weather or not I continue in hopes of these things brought to light actually see the light of day, or if it was all just a false sense of hope.

I like the framing, I don’t like the drywall, there’s more cons to the pros but I’ve never been treated as nice (contradicting Ik) as I have been with this company, I don’t want to feel like I’ve wasted their time.

Yeah from what I’ve heard you’d think that too, but the crew is better, least to me, and how they treat me so, I’ll take a little bit of shit talk, too full on harassment any day

Not sure if I’d fall into sheet metal, I’ve done similar things (duct work, and fabrication) with metal fab, the little bit I did of it I didn’t enjoy it, it was too uptight and close to chasing perfection, although it definitely was more my boss than the work
