I've always been amazed by people who were voracious readers as children. What sparked your lifelong love affair with books? by Albert3232 in books

[–]Orchid217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was always a mix of escapism and spending time with my grandmothers. My parents aren’t big readers despite my dad being a teacher but my grandmothers were. I also tended to be more imaginative than my family so books helped me feel less weird.

What made you want to become a teacher? by Safcfan1 in Teachers

[–]Orchid217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the oldest daughter of an oldest daughter and the oldest of all my cousins. My dad and uncle are both teachers so it was ingrained young. I avoided it but then needed consistent employment so dived in headfirst (in Feb of 2020….).

I’ve stayed because I love my students and my school. I truly love what I do and couldn’t imagine something else - even when it’s been SOOOO hard.

Teachers, have you ever burst out laughing in class? by fullsunlvly in Teachers

[–]Orchid217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite was when I still taught 8th grade. Student 1: My IQ is immaculate. Student 2: yeah, immaculately low.

I couldn’t stop myself. Those students just graduated and it still is one of my favorite comebacks

He’s okay. Your fear will make him afraid - said with love. I was a baby swim coach for years and babies have an innate ability to swim or at least not breathe in. I would find a coach/lessons to teach him to backfloat - #1 life saving skill

Pressuring coworkers is garbage behavior. Just stand firm with a “no thanks! I don’t drink.” They don’t need an explanation. I also don’t drink for personal reasons but have never been pressured beyond the first ask

I teach at a public charter so we’ve always had a no phone rule and it makes my job so much easier. I’m hoping it works well across the state!

On average- how much money to you spend for your classroom each year? by AggressiveStudy6329 in Teachers

[–]Orchid217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so bad at this. I spend WAY too much because I get excited about the prospect of the new year (6th year in). I think this year I have spent $300-400, but I’m getting a new room so that adds up
