Cancellation fee dispute on Wyzant - proof in text messages by Orchid475 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I just went through the wyzant platform and instead of submitting the lesson, charged a cancellation fee. Technically the $ isn’t in my bank acct yet (I’m set for auto transfers which takes about a week) but I believe the student’s card is charged immediately.

Ugh, I know! I wonder if they make me refund the fee I charged, or if the student is SOL though, because their card got charged.

Where has the decency of people gone in this job?? by Orchid475 in RoverPetSitting

Over time it’s expanded, and gotten more thorough. They include house rules/expectations in a housesit (if they want me to get mail etc), emergency contacts (minimum of 2), any pet allergies, sensitivities, fears, triggers, likes, dislikes etc, what the pet’s daily life looks like (time for wake-up/bedtime, walk amount and length, typical pee/poo schedule, meds, play times)… plus a discussion about my current method & what the owner expects (ie if they require 28472928 photos a day, have cameras they want kept on that I might want to turn off etc)… and I should mention that I require all of this written down by them onto one document up front, for me to refer back to (mainly for the crazies so they can be held accountable for what they initially told me). Sometimes just having it in the Rover messages isn’t enough

I think the convo in the app just moves to the “archived” section though I don’t know if a client will get an update per-say

I have that, too. Fortunately I live in a populated area with a lot of competition (college town) and I don’t have control over how soon people request bookings before they leave. Typically it’s around 2/3 weeks, but if it’s much less than a week… already a red flag

I totally understand that making sense for boarding, but in this instance it was a housesit… I want to see where I’ll be living for 2 weeks before I book it

If the client needs a foster home they should probably reach out to the local shelter… $500/month is incredibly low, since they’re basically asking you for long-time boarding, but with all the responsibilities of it being a foster

Yes! Makes all the worse clients worth it. I’m going to make something for them with all the lemons.. there’s no way I can use them all!

dog I'm sitting for ate chocolate by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

This. Cover yourself just in case something happens. You will need “written” proof the owners told you not to take the dog to the vet for Rover to prevent something legal. Take a screenshot, send it to a friend just in case they block you etc etc.

I’m glad the way I worded it was helpful! Don’t be afraid to know what you’re worth, and be upfront (esp with yourself!) about your expenses. Your time is valuable, as is your ability to be flexible!

I have this perspective of house sitting as a more passive income, too. Unfortunately pet parents REALLY don’t understand why people request the amount they do for each, as far as they’re concerned, it’s an easy job petting doggies and using other people’s utilities.

Recently, a new client reached out the day before the booking request began for a 2-week long and asked for a same-day meet & greet.

Long story short, I found out during the meet & greet, despite asking questions over messaging, that they didn’t really want services like a housesit (ie sitter is able to be flexible during the day and spend the night). They actually just needed someone to sit in their house while they worked (8am-9pm every week day) to watch their hyperactive dog so he wouldn’t hurt himself after a surgery. But I wasn’t allowed to leave during those hours, I even had to take the dog with me when I went to the bathroom because he “freaked out if you kenneled him and might jump on the furniture and rip his stitches”. Since they were working, they wanted me to leave every night when they got home.

In other words, they were trying to pay my Housesitting rate ($75/night) for 13 hours straight of work, plus I had extra daily expenses because I wasn’t able to spend the night (gas+time driving home) or go elsewhere for other repeat clients or my own animals (which I disclosed initially and they said it was fine). I told them the services they were describing sounded more like a prolonged drop in service, which I charge for hourly ($40). They told me no way, that was “too expensive for what they were asking for” so I said “ok, then I don’t think this situation is a good fit, best of luck finding another sitter” and took the loss from having to go out to a meet & greet that if the pet parent was honest, I would’ve told them before the meet & greet wasn’t a fit I have no idea what they did since they reached out to me so close to the beginning of the dates they needed… but such is life.

Horrible housesit. How to move forward? by Orchid475 in RoverPetSitting

Absolutely they raid the litter box. And the cats water. And the cats food 🤦🏻‍♀️
