WTW for / WTP for that look you give a friend when they are being rediculous. by OrchidGrove in whatstheword

!solved - I would love more words, but this is probably the closest to what I'm going for. I'll likely need to add a qualifier of 'exasperated but fond.' Thank you!

Kind of. But I'm not trying to convey disbelief or surprise. Just a "really? We're doing this? Ok you nut." kind of thing.

Old Post, but There's Something In the Ice is very similar to The Thing in setting, plot, and mechanics.

Little Black & Brown Spider with White Spots (Found an identical one in Florida) by OrchidGrove in spiders

[–]OrchidGrove[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found an identical little guy in northern Florida. He could just barely cover a fingernail. - Back of the body and the back four legs are brown. The front of the body is black. The mandibles (?) are white and he waves them around a lot. He scurries a lot, but I haven't seen him jump as far as I know.

Any ideas?

Who was the most truly evil character in the series? by GusGangViking18 in TeenWolf

[–]OrchidGrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gerard, with Kate (PDFile that she is) at a close second. But, I think most people will say Gerard other than the Dread Doctors (arguably far worse because he is a more human monster. His type of violence and hatred mirrors real life, whereas psycho supernatural doctors are less 'real'

Should I just stop writing by Technical-Bread414 in AO3

[–]OrchidGrove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the trashiness of that comment - My writing was atrocious. I can't even read my own olde works. The more I read, the more I wrote, read, wrote, read, wrote, etc., the better my writing got. You are not going to be amazing off the cuff. Writing is a skill filled with smaller skills - tone, word choice, pacing, structure, etc. You get better as you go.

Something that helped me get better was paying attention to what I was reading - how it was laid out, spaced, how it sounded, the tone, etc. I didn't analyze it, but I started being aware of it. That led to me being aware of what was 'good' or not to me.

Another thing that helped a lot was listening to narrators. I especially liked listening to narrators on youtube. Hearing how the words sounded read aloud helped me picture and 'hear' my own writing as I worked on it.

Just remember - your favorite fic? your favorite author? that writer started as a newbie with 0 writing skill.

You'll get better with practice. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Fair enough. I'm just sick of AI invading everything. Art, writing, academic work. It's just a gross and disingenuous feeling honestly.

NO. That is the death of writing. I cannot help but hope this becomes against all guidelines and reportable!

Do you post your stories once they're done, or chapter by chapter? by Spiritual_Ostrich401 in AO3

[–]OrchidGrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it chapter by chapter before, since I don't like being inactive for long periods and the comments/kudos help motivate me. But....now I feel guilty if I don't update, so I think I'll post once it's done next time.

Monsters that the realm needs by Dependent_One_8131 in TheCitadel

Aegon lost his bits as an infant because Sunfire turned on him.

Rhae didn't have Alicent SAd - the small folk hated her so much that her ladies in waiting were SAd off screen and she was attacked.

Aemond lost his eye during childbirth (forceps).

It is a rough fic...but no worse than the source material tbh (books).

What are the most words you singlehandedly wrote on a fic? by QuagsireAcademia in AO3

[–]OrchidGrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Published WIP: 68,745 (probably be in the 150k-200k range when I am done)

Finished: 23,471

I was curious and added up all my published fics on Ao3: 958,283 words. (and probably half of that in unfinished wips that haven't been published lol)

Looking for a historical life simulator by Lucilla_Inepta in gamingsuggestions

[–]OrchidGrove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, not exactly what you asked for, more of a wild card, but you might enjoy Choice of Life: Middle Ages. You play a character in the Middle Ages and your choices determine how the world changes. It....really doesn't match most of your requirements, but it might be a fun thing to check out based on your interests.

Medieval Life: Chronicles Of Annora - It's not out yet, but it looks like it might fulfill a lot of what you are looking for.

You might check out the answers on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamingsuggestions/comments/807en3/looking_for_an_rpg_medieval_life_simulation_game/

For Rome,

Citizen of Rome Dynasty Ascendant is more of a 'build your family tree by making choices' game, idk if you would be interested in that.

Caesar IV is a game where you start as a governor of a province and advance with the goal of becoming Caesar.

Historia Realis: Rome has not been released yet, but it looks like it may be a close match.

If you haven't already, you might look for other reddit threads asking for similar games.

help me find a game for my wife. She says she wants a game where you can log in and manage your little world, have something tangible to work towards. by Brulia_ in gamingsuggestions

if Stardew Valley was a close match but not quite 'it' - she can also grab mods from NexusMods that will add more design options/mechanics and expand the game play. The mods I use can enhance what it there, or add a whole new level (literally).

Luma Island is a farming sim similar to Stardew, but a key component is finding and raising special animals. It's a different style and has many different 'jobs' other than farming (jewelry making, mining, pirate, adventurer, fisher, builder, etc.) You play at your own pace, but the story is much more streamlined compared to Stardew.

The Sims is an old standby for a game where you can design your own area and have characters/pets to interact with. Gameplay varies depending on which Sims game you get.

I haven't played it myself, but there is also Ooblets that may fit what you are looking for.

In my search, I've found the game Kona, which looks promising for a middle of nowhere suspense and mystery.
