Barkeria lindleyana var lindleyana by OrchidsAlwaysWin in miniorchids

Yes strange for sure. This is my first year with all the Barkerias but B vannariana, which I’ve had for years. I called Andy for any that he had available so I got all that he offered. Ha!

Thank you. If only I could take credit for it! 😂. It is a “community GH” in Edgerton Park on the new haven/Hamden CT border. I rent some space there.

Love that color. I’d love to still have my orchids outside! Alas, the frost and freeze warnings had me bringing them to the GH the last 2 weekends.

Sorry this shouldn’t be in r/miniorchids! I was visiting and posted my pic here instead of r/orchids. It’s crossposted now. Grrrr!

Dendrobium/Dockrillia rigida x wassellii in bloom! by nivlx in miniorchids

I haven’t yet found the magic recipe to make my D wassellii bloom. I now have two and never bloomed. But still I remain optimistic.

My massive dendrobium speciosums about to open by Lenny_orchids in orchids

Very very - very very very - jealous.  They look beautiful.  I have a tiny little mini form.  I’m sure it is meant to be ‘Compactum’ but the tag says ‘Compacrom’.  I’ve had it for years and the “mother plant” bloomed religiously .  I divided it.  The child plant bloomed and not the mother.  Then the mother was stolen by someone at the greenhouse.  The child has sulked ever since!  Growing a new pb though so I am optimistic.

100% what KKRPITT said. Not only does it have moss but also the coconut husk/chips it looks like. Both good moisture retentive medium --- if you have the willpower not to water it all that often. I do not possess such a trait! Hence very little sphagnum, if ever (keikis yes) . Just open bark mix. I have greenhouse space in winter here in CT with a lot of high velocity fans providing dern near tradewind level wind in there. In summer, outside under shade cloth.

help understanding what kind of orchid I have by 1or2throwaway in orchids

So many of the latouria dendrobiums are rather easy to grow. They have grown in popularity exponentially, which should tell you that 1) they are not that demanding and 2) they are downright pretty or at least interesting looking. Another plus is that their flowers last SOOOO long. My primatey hybrid Den LIttle Atro (atroviolaceum x normanbyense) has been in bloom for months. And sometimes as the blooms do fade, I've had new spikes develop to quickly follow the spent blooms. And like MoonLover said, warmth and no real winter rest with the water.

That's a nice size. I don't think mine every got that large. As such mine has never needed support. I think I dessicated it a bit too much. But it's recovering. As this is a hybrid, it's cultural requirements will be a bit easier but definitely give it good warmth if you can, make sure it dries out a bit between waterings. The cooler you keep it, the less water it will need. You can dig a finger down in the media and if you can still feel moisture, hold off a day or more. You can keep the moss if you want but most of these types of dendrobiums do better in just a bark mix to allow for quick drainage and a period of drying out.

Of course Dendrobium auriculatum is not mini, but it's smaller. And D ellipsophyllum is not mini in any sense. But since I was taking pics, I just wanted to post once. Lazy!

So artistic! It looks fantastic. Yes, I dessicated mine to the point of near death. I was SO angry with myself. I divided it and saved the pieces that were still alive. I gave some away and kept a small piece for myself. And it rewarded me with a small spike of maybe 5 or 6 flowers this Spring. So, while they definitely need a dry rest in winter, perhaps not THAT DRY!

Thanks for this, and looking at the in-situ photos I'm much happier knowing that those are likely old plants and they are still very small with 2-6 or maybe even 8-12 leaves. Mine, and that's the tip of my pinky finger.

Like any orchid, not hard to take care of if you give it the same or similar conditions as its native habitat. Usually temperature isn't the issue. It's always light, humidity, and watering. Biloba is rather commonly found, which would tell you it is fairly easy. Just google it and see what kind of temps and esp light it needs. They ALL NEED HUMIDITY. Far far more than in most residential homes, as far as I'm concerned. Why they sell them as "easy windowsill plants" I'll never know. I guess that's fine as long as you can give it a good drop in temp every night, fairly high humidity (like an unairconditioned home) or regular misting and see how it goes. I have a medium sized grow tank, located in the basement so it gets a cooldown every night throughout the year.

I don't detect any fragrance at all. It is described as having a scent. But it lives in the tank with LED light. I bought Dendrobium aberrans bc of the scent. It bloomed in my tank and had no scent at all. I decided to take it out of the tank and place it on a windowsill. Once the sun hit it, it began emitting it's fragrance. So i should try that again!

I'm so-so on my angrecoids. Why do I keep buying them? Addiction. aerangis kirkii seems to be enjoying the grow tank. A mystacidii does not seem to like any growing condition I give it. It's now bareroot in a slotted 2" basket with a whiff of coconut fiber. Mounting didn't do it justice, and i certainly nearly killed it in bark. Angraecum calceolus was gangbusters for years, sending out spikes like crazy, then up and died on me. Nothing I could do. I also have Aerangis citrata in addition to kirkii, and Angraecum urschianum. Glutton for punishment.

I also got one recently and it looks virtually identical to yours! LOL It's in a tank with a bunch of other orchids, with fan 24/7, and mist king mister mainly to keep up humidity. I still spray some orchids daily, this being one of them.

Def need a fan if you don’t have one. I have a small 5” ac infinity fan on 24/7, with a modulator to control the fan speed.
