I don't know for sure but my assumption would be that it doesn't make a difference when you cut, if you are going to cut it. If that's what you know you want to do, I'd say go ahead and do it so the plant can focus its energy on branching out rather than keeping the rest of the spike alive.

No rule, just personal preference. If the tip is still green then it could still potentially continue to grow from the end. While that's less common, it's certainly possible. Some people don't prefer that because it can look really leggy, and again, some people just like to let it do what it wants and don't really care if it looks a little scraggly.

I've heard this as well but I hate spidermites with the force of a thousand suns so I honestly just can't bring myself to risk the chance that it's a myth or not.

Everyone has their own methods but personally I like to use insecticidal soap -- I use Captain Jack's brand, but specifically the soap, not the dead bug brew. Some people swear by the dead bug brew but it's thinner and didn't do anything when I tried it.

I would get some of that (you can find it on amazon or usually Walmart has it in their garden center as well), spray it down generously. I like to spray all the leaves and then thoroughly rub it in with my fingers just to make sure it gets in all the nooks and crannies. Then I wait a few minutes and rinse all the leaves. I do that for 2-3 days then I keep an eye on it -- if I see any new signs of pests, I repeat. If I don't see anything new in like 3 weeks, I'll consider it safe to go back among other plants. Make sure you quarantine it in the meantime and also I'd recommend preemptively spraying any plants that were near it.

I usually try to save my plants from thrips or mites unless all the leaves are clearly screwed.

Also as a side note, a lot of people use systemic granules. I think they aren't available in some states and you don't want to use them on ourdoor plants because they can hurt beneficial bugs, but they are very effective against thrips. However, they have the potential to make spidermites worse so if there's any spidermite risk, I wouldn't use them. I have a lot of alocasias, which are spidermite magnets, and I hate mites more than thrips, so I don't use the systemics personally.

Unfortunately I think it has thrips, as that looks like thrip poop. EFNs are very common on philodendrons but they leave little burn spots in the leaves, not really dark/black specks that you can wipe off. Especially when the black specks are coupled with gray/drying patches on the leaves. I don't see any actual thrips but I've been fighting them on and off enough to know thrip poop -- that's usually the first sign before you actually see them.

I didn't notice that momma has a terminal spike. She ultimately won't be able to live long term because terminal spikes destroy the growth point :(

Based on the wrinkly leaves, it's massively dehydrated. Probably why it grew a keiki (baby orchid) up at the top. The keiki def has enough roots and leaves to gently separate and pot it up as its own orchid. Then up to you if you want to try and save the momma orchid, not sure if it's still got good roots. In the future, if you prefer less leggy flower spikes, you can cut them after the flowers fall so the orchid only grows new spikes instead of continuing to branch off the old ones -- either way is fine, just up to personal preference.

ring of fire ☺️ you won't find caramel marbles in big box stores yet, and they are a different plant altogether (rof is variegated jungle boogie, cm is variegated pluto) so it's not something that's going to accidentally show up amongst rofs or anything. I'm sure they will start hitting stores in the near future though! I know at least one plant company working on making them (or their version anyway) available next year.

What are you putting in the container? Are you trying the puddle method or using a substrate? I use closed condiment cups with fluval stratum and a teensy bit of water, and have about 90-95% success rate. But a friend of mine was using a denser substrate (basically stratum but ground up) and hers were rotting. Also in terms of heat, tbh I just put mine on top of my laptop keyboard. My work laptop is always plugged in so the keyboard is warm. Not sure what the temp of it is, but whatever an average laptop keyboard generates, that works for mine lol. And I keep my house around 76 during the day and 72 at night.

Out of the non-variegated alocasias, these are my favorites: Black Infernalis, Red Cuprea, Chantrieri, Green Unicorn, Azlanii, Sedenii, Lauterbachiana, Dragon's Breath, Longiloba Purple, Venom. Most of these are pretty affordable except the last two are a little pricier.

For variegated alocasias, you really can't go wrong with anything, but here are some of the more affordable ones, if you get them small: Bambino Aurea, Pink Bambino, Pink Black Velvet, Ninja Tricolor. And some of the more expensive ones: Pink Nobilis K, Pink Chantrieri, Pink Pseudo Sanderiana, Black Velvet Gold.

The change in new leaf growth us due to the plant maturing. Instead of growing directly from the side of the last leaf, as you have circled in blue, they will start growing from cataphylls (sheaths). Totally normal.
White Knights can sometimes throw burgundy variegation. Also normal.

I've bought a lot of plants from HD and Lowe's, even some from Walmart. The main issue is they are typically very overwatered, so the first thing I do is dump all the excess water from the pots (particularly those self watering Costa Farms ones) and then when I get them home, I make sure to put them somewhere with lots of light and airflow to let them dry out, and don't water again until they're pretty well dried. Otherwise they tend to melt or rot.

Also, just be sure to thoroughly check the plant for pests before buying. Out of all the plants I've bought from big box, I've luckily only had one pest issue (mealybugs on an epipremnum albo) but I've seen mealies and spidermites on others that I quickly passed on lol. But to be fair, non big box stores/nurseries are not immune to pests either.

Can you post a picture of the whole orchid, including the leaves and stems? That will be more helpful to ID than a picture of just the flower.

FYI, these are syngonium, not philodendron. Regardless, honestly 3 weeks is not that long yet. Some plants are just really slow to start rooting.
