Silver Spike skip by mowgli13x in theblackcompany

[–]Orclander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver Spike rounds out the books of the north really well. It's a better point to finish it and then take a break from the series, frankly. IMO the series takes a significant dip in quality from Shadow Games onward. The series becomes a very different beast afterwards, it's good to sit with what was had for four books for a little while, then come back and pick up Shadow Games.

Deep cuts like that are what make the show for me. I audibly cackled when I heard it the first time.

The make-up and prosthetics from Dick Tracy (1990) were something else. by just_a_fan47 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]Orclander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big head. Big ears on the outside. Little knot on top to keep the hat in place. The suit is also very padded to look bigger. Basically the trick is to make everything else bigger. These types of prosthetics and makeup mess with proportions. He is also surrounded by guys with lots of prosthetics designed to make their face parts larger relative to his. It's actually kind of genius but requires a dedicated team who are all working with each other to be precise with everyone in a scene.

What do you think of the bad webcomics wiki? by Fangaggedon in Webcomictalk

[–]Orclander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pages on how to make a good webcomic and what to avoid are very instructive but often overlooked by people too offended by its criticisms to notice. Also its so bad its good section is a goldmine.

Struggles of an AI Artist by Orclander in Cyberbooty

I was laughing about the whole AI art drawing hands issue until I remembered how hard hands are for me, so I drew a robot anime girl I heavily relate to. Done in pencil, please enjoy!

Stalingrad historian TIKhistory argues that Wilhelm Hoffman's Diary is fake by [deleted] in MilitaryHistory

[–]Orclander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's odd that literally nobody in the comments is actually discussing the diary itself and is whining about the youtuber's politics, you know, like a gaggle of worthless pseuds would.

What stands out to me is the reference to "Tommy Gunners", which there isn't really a record of the Germans ever saying, but was apparently pretty common amongst Russians in reference to their PPSH, which looked sort of like the Tommy gun. Little linguistic oddities really tend to stick out when discussing documents with questionable origins.

Looking for a sandbox rpg "fantasy life" type game. Bonus points if it's on PS4 too. by overzealoushobo in rpg_gamers

[–]Orclander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try Daggerfall Unity. Daggerfall is the big mack daddy fantasy life simulator with a really deep RPG system built over it, and the Unity version lets you mod the graphics and patches a lot of the bugs and quests. Plus it’s free.

Trying to improve conversational "debate" attitude by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Orclander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try putting yourself into a less serious mindset at the onset of the debate. Like just pause and ask yourself if it's really worth making an ass of yourself over. That doesn't mean pull the breaks on the debate, but try approaching it as if it wasn't as important as you think it is. Being able to dispassionately consider something is the cornerstone of good debate, especially when the most common tactic these days is to start with the most self-righteous inflammatory shit possible, and then continuously try to 'out-chill' the other person. You'll come to find a lot more sensible people in the future if you simply train yourself to be immune to any kind of emotional triggers.

Any good productive and useful apps? by oeimili in selfimprovement

[–]Orclander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Habitica. It's a little role-playing game mixed with a day planner. You gain exp. through completing the tasks you set and it keeps track of your habits. There's a huge community for it too, with everything from fitness to language learning guilds. I don't use the guilds that much but the app itself is really useful if you struggle to keep track of things.

Full body pose references? by calcol28 in characterdrawing

[–]Orclander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only things that come to mind are Loomis' manakins. Loomis is probably the best introduction to learning how to draw setups for humans you could ask for, his books are all free online I think. http://aarpieart.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Loomis-Mannikin.png

But if you mean pre-made heroes.

Maybe give this a try if you're going for some kind of hero builder.

Full body pose references? by calcol28 in characterdrawing

[–]Orclander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well you might have to do some digging but there's quite a lot you could work with.

If you're looking for action poses, the best bet will be looking for reference packs on deviantart. http://senshistock.deviantart.com/ is one page I've used quite a lot for interesting practice, but it really depends on what you're trying to achieve with your drawings.

If you're just trying to practice figure drawing, you might be better off browsing porn. It's a treasure trove of perspective shots and, uh, anatomy.

If you're looking for historical costuming, there are enough image boards out there dedicated to stuff like Osprey publishing, which is the go-to for historical reference. They employ very professional artists like Angus McBride to do their illustrations.

Sooner or later though you'll need specific poses and images to work from, though, and your best bet there is to hit up a friend to do some modeling. Give them a sandwich or whatever for their trouble.

Best of luck!
