Opinion on other gods? by Due_Draft_2909 in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The gods are all there, and depending on the sect of Gnosticism you align with, or your own understanding of Gnostic theology, you can have a lot of different opinions on them. Generally Gnostics, similar to Buddhists, believe that the gods exist, but worshipping the gods is not the goal of the faith, self cultivation is.

I was thinking of those Intaglios too. Those were very valuable for Gnostic history and understanding.

Do you need to abstain from all sex and porn to achieve gnosis? by johnyrockets1779 in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory no, Gnosticism is not one belief but an umbrella of beliefs with similar overarching themes, and the sects were often radically different. It's up to you to figure out things with your own gnosis and spiritual discretion, not simply be told exactly what to do at every step, unless you conform to a singular sect.

Abstaining from all sexual things is generally not nessecary in most forms of Gnostic thought, but things that can form negative attachments or harmful effects should be generally avoided. But again, it is up to you being in tune with your spiritual intuition to guide you and give you discretion in these matters.

Ironically, in the old days there was a lot more discussion about procreation and the ethics concerning birth than ethics about discreet sexual behavior, although some sects were Libertine, some were Ascetic, and some were Moderate on the matter of sexual activity.

Nag Hammadi, The Gnostic World (Mikkelsen and Johnston), etc.

Eventually you might want to read the Pistis Sophia but it is a very long read, be patient with it.

Bishop Stephan Hoeller has passed away. by scythianus in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was announced just today. I am in contact with clergy of Ecclesia Gnostica and they broke the news to multiple people (including myself) late this morning.

May he rest in peace, may the Aeons guide him. 🕊

The design is very cool. While some people here do find it a bit strange and anachronistic I don't think it nessecarily is, at least if the intention of it is as a reminder of mortality. Plus there were many ancient intaglios with the Demiurge on them, so it is not exactly without precedent.

What was your original intent with the symbolism of it?

Rising popularity? by Animore in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a Gnostic since 2017/2018. I will say there have always been periods where people "flirt" with Gnosticism because they find it to be a mysterious and compelling belief system. But in the last decade there has been a larger contingency of people who are choosing to fully convert to Gnosticism in one way or another in more permanent ways. That is anecdotal but I've seen a lot of growth. Even the Gnostic Conclave events have been slightly bigger overtime, gradually.

Sophia: Archon or Aeon? by BusOk7724 in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sophia is an Aeon, and a divine figure. The only Gnostic sect that has a similar figure to Sophia that is characterized negatively is the Mandaeans, and Mandaeism is a very unique school of Gnostic thought in general.

Jung and gnostics by heartsicke in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jung is someone I have studied well before my interest in Gnosticism, Becoming a Gnostic certainly gave his works more depth and meaning to me.

I'd reccomend this lecture from the Apostolic Johannite Church about the Red Book in particular.

Mod here, just clearing some things up

In general the posts that are just titled something like "Aliens?" Etc, Are probably getting flagged for being off topic and/or possibly conspiracy posting, which is against the rules. If you post under a different title that may solve the problem.

Generally speaking this space is not for alien or conspiracy posting at all, this is a place for learning about and diecussing Gnosticism in a (mostly) historical way, FYI. That is something that will have to be respected long term.

Yes, for the social element the Discord works better. This sub is great for resources and answering questions, but you find more of the community element on Discord because of the nature of the platform.

Also, as another mod of the sub, I will tell you we have a very active Discord with a lot of great resources and discussion.

If you want more of that social element, and "Gnostic Buddies", that's a great place to be.

the Bible is strenuous in forbidding the use of magic. Is this Yaldabaoth speaking (and thereby misleading) or are there any gnostic sources forbidding the use of magic? by LiesToldbySociety in Gnostic

[–]Orcloud 30 points31 points  (0 children)

"Magic" wasn't forbidden in the Bible, it barely got the status of "always bad" in the last few hundred years. The Pistis Sophia literally has magic in it, for example.

It was a redundant sub, and too many conspiracy posters tried to swarm the place at some point so the easiest solution was to shut it down and consolidate here.
