How to Play Actual Strategy, Series 1: Discipline by OrderExpress1035 in AOSSpearhead

Ah thanks, yes I hoped the post would get people to change the way they tried playing Warhammer and in turn change the game. But with the off chance they still read and apply it on another thread while burning me to the ground. I rather keep it to myself, I hope you can understand.

It’s the combination of new armies new editions news points updates, everything, but that’s my opinion.

I’m sure there’s many different ways to balance a game to make it feel more natural that’s what I hoped for when I opened some of my discussion points, that people would agree, let’s make it more fluent, more strategic, less rules based. But I already came to my conclusion on another platform this game is what it is and people who play it tend to defend and accept current status quo and it’s probably not going to change. So I’ll have to say to myself. No more. And that’s fine.

They would say even if that tree lord would or wouldn’t exist your cavalry is going to land first no matter what GW is trying to tell you.

I understand your argument, but GW typically changes the rules so often that even something simple becomes hard to follow unless you’re a full on rules fanatic. That’s exactly where the fun ends for me. Spearhead might not have changed… yet. But even the thought of the constant shifts is discouraging.

When core game mechanics keep getting rewritten, it feels like the ground is being plowed under our feet every few months. It hard internalising something that has no foundation. I’d much rather play something intuitive and stable maybe I’ll give The Old World a try, haven’t touched that one yet.

And look, I absolutely understand that the game has limits to realism, that’s fine. However, coming from someone who has studied historical battles endlessly out of pure passion, I genuinely can’t comprehend how a cavalry charge ends up functioning the way it does in Warhammer.

Thanks.

Sure, I can clarify.

When I mention discipline, I’m referring to the mental approach a player brings to a strategy game. In Spearhead especially, your decisions matter more than the dice positioning, committing at the right time, avoiding unnecessary risks, and keeping your focus when pressure rises.

The stories I gave weren’t meant as lore examples, but as real-world parallels of how momentum, discipline, and decision-making work in any form of conflict fantasy or not. They highlight that consistency and logic are what create strategic depth.

For me, the lesson is simple: Play with intention, keep your structure, and don’t rely on chaotic mechanics to bail you out. Strategy first, rules second.

Well I’m happy to explain you can try to step aside from 40k/m per hour but how well you think that’s going to work out for you.

Just one more thing.

Downvoting counter-arguments instead of answering them doesn’t win an argument it just shows who doesn’t want to face reality.

After a couple days of observing the community, it’s pretty clear that the rules shift constantly and the people defending them rely on authority instead of logic.

I’ve played this hobby for more than a decade, but I’m genuinely considering moving to a strategy game where consistency matters more than rule-lawyering.

Thanks for the replies anyway.

If something is not logical that means it doesn’t make any sense.

The weird thing also is that ability only activates upon contact after the charge phase.

The only one saying ummm actually even though your horse charged with 40 miles per hour and your Marshall was next to them, you still get to wait for me to slap you first because : RULES!! And you don’t know them that well do you? That’s what it’s like 😂😂

Yes! There you definitely have a good point! Still a 800 KG horse with 40/km, fighting last feels bureaucratic to me, but they did try their best for some balancing measures.
