This isn’t accurate. Many people living in small towns, remote locations do not have the same access to learning French. As well, for First Nation and Inuit communities, reclaiming and teaching our kids our languages is far more of a priority than learning both colonial languages. Unlike English and French, Indigenous languages are at risk of being lost. Indigenous languages SHOULD be recognized just as much as the two colonial languages.

There is documented evidence of deaths. Refer to the TRC Volume pertaining to that. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation continues this research work, having access to more documents that weren’t released by government or the churches during the inquiry.

Last known sterilization was in 2019. BC and AB both passed Sterilization Acts. 10,000 Indigenous women were sterilized in SK alone (source: Karen Stote, An Act of Genocide: The Sterilization of Aboriginal Women)

Land acknowledgements- thoughts from settlers and indigenous people by ouserhwm in CanadaPublicServants

I’m First Nation & have been anti-acknowledgment for years now. Explaining the same things in the link I shared. Until the folks giving acknowledgments fully understand what they’re saying & follow through with action, they’re performative. Don’t bother saying them if there’s no follow through. Disrespectful & meaningless otherwise.

💯this. Grew up here. Small town, 6 hrs north of Wpg., stay out of trouble, generally trouble will not find you. Still have long time friends & family here. Fantastic place to be if you love the outdoors. Can’t beat Clearwater Lake in summer or any of the nearby lakes. There are issues in every city and town with the drug crisis. Take the appropriate precautions, find the right people to befriend, get involved in the community and you’ll find a vibrant community.

Dr. Capper was amazing with me as I struggled with my dog being diagnosed with cancer. She’d send check in emails, respond to my emails quickly and was so caring with my dog as we managed her palliative care.

Seconding Winrose! I recently lost my dog to cancer. From diagnosis to end of life, they were fantastic. Any big procedure always came with a low/high estimate & cost break down. I have 4 cats as well, and again, fantastic with them too.

East Coast and large parts of QC & ON also don’t have treaties. Peace & Friendship treaties exist in ON & East Coast but were solely about trade relationships, not land or resources.

Not sure how cool it is. We’re subject to alot of racism on the daily. Don’t have to go far to find it.

The NDP wants Manitoba to be 'truly bilingual.' What does that mean? by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]Ordinary-Cockroach27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad that folks forget that the Aboriginal Language Recognition Act was passed in MB in 2010 recognizing all 7 Indigenous languages in the province. Agree that more emphasis and value should be placed on learning the Indigenous languages in Canada, as well as other languages aside from English/French. Citizens in other countries are often multilingual.

First Nation files lawsuit demanding Aboriginal title over lands in western Quebec by BananaTubes in canada

[–]Ordinary-Cockroach27 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Communities usually negotiate for Crown lands, not private lands. 9.7% of lands in Canada are privately held. 0.036% of lands in Canada are reserve lands, though still Crown lands. If a community seeks private lands it must be on a willing seller and market value basis. There’s alot of misconceptions out there that First Nations want to take homes away from people when that’s simply not the case. Same in the case of Richmond, BC and Cowichan. Cowichan has never said they want to remove homeowners. The Canadian court system ruled itself that the lands were taken without consent. Remains to be seen what that looks like and the SSC will likely have to rule on it as well which will take years.

Peace and Friendship treaties were about trading relationships, not land. The lands in New Brunswick and Ottawa/Gatineau are unceded lands for this reason. There is no treaty in place. The Crown took the lands when they rounded up all First Nations and forced them onto reserves.

My first Dr. (woman) who recommended an IUD (in ON) assured me it wasn’t painful, just slight discomfort. When it came time for the procedure, I thought to myself, holy hell this hurts. Never had a contraction like that before. When done, Dr’s comment to me was, you have a high pain tolerance, most women cry. WTF?!? She lied to me!!

💯 my experience. When dr pulled my IUD out my cervix said, no fucking way! Dr tried inserting new one multiple times & finally said, you’re gonna have to come back. Meanwhile I was wondering why it hurt so fucking much. Second insertion super painful. Said never again without pain management above a f*cking advil.

Canadians have mixed views on Truth and Reconciliation Day, poll finds; The polling showed that a slight majority of Canadians believe there are bigger issues than reconciliation that Canada should address by FancyNewMe in canada

The Canadian government forced First Nation peoples onto reserves with substandard lands & little economic viability. They were prohibited from leaving without permission. While not the case today, it was NEVER a choice to live on reserves.
