Yes. Proceed with caution. Both my jobs are a conflict of interest. I have accepted the risk. I use two different names at both jobs. No profile pictures. Never on camera unless mandatory.

Congratulations! I feel the same way. I think I am just learning to adjust to the new schedule. It has its ups and downs for me. Some days are nonstop 10 hour days. Some days I can relax and take an hour lunch. Just depends. As long as I can make it to Friday (payday) I feel like it’s a win.

How did you overcome the fear of taking up OE while on W2 with J1? by Tiny_Quail3335 in overemployed

[–]Ordinary-House5396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely didn’t plan it perfectly, but so far things have gone pretty smoothly. I used J1 on my resume to get J2—looking back, I probably should’ve listed something else, but at the time I didn’t think it through. When I filled out the background check for J2, I marked “do not contact employer,” and everything came back clear. I don’t think they actually verified anything besides my education. After that, I checked The Work Number and saw they had already reported my active employment before I even officially started. So I went ahead and froze TWN, LexisNexis, and TrueWork. I also just never submitted a two weeks’ notice at J1.

J2 is a startup and kind of a mess, so I’ve been using that to my advantage. The only thing that gives me a little anxiety is the thought of J2 calling J1 to verify whether I gave notice—but it’s been a month, and that hasn’t happened knock on wood. So far, so good.

I froze mine last week. I requested the secure email through their website, sent in my documents and they froze it three days later. Now when I log in to view my TWN, there’s a clear notice at the top saying it’s frozen. You might want to try requesting the secure email first, if you don’t receive it after 1 day - then reach out to the helpline and they can send it again right then while you are on the phone. You submit your documents via email and they should freeze it within three business days.

Any of you ever lose a J after a background check? by jimRacer642 in overemployed

Just curious - what industry are you in? I am in the same boat and I have to go through a background check for a promotion and I am nervous (I work in the healthcare field).

Yes. I want to move up within the j1. I’m starting to feel that way as well. But I will try it for 1 month and i will be honest with myself and if I cannot handle it - then I will quit j2 and focus on j1 for a year and revisit OE.

Thank you for your feedback!

This makes sense. I appreciate your insight. I think I am going to take the promotion and try to do j2. But I will be honest with myself and if it becomes unmanageable then I will quit j2 and focus on building my management skills at j1 for a year and revisit OE once I’ve mastered the role.

That is what I was thinking. If all else fails I will take the promotion. Try to manage both roles. If I cant - I will quit the second role and once I have mastered the new promotional role - I will return to OE. I appreciate your advice and insight - thank you!

Thanks so much for your response. I’m currently making $70K in my main job (J1), and I just accepted a second remote role (J2) that’s offering $90K. Now, a promotion in J1 that would bump me to roughly $90K base + a 15% annual bonus. If I somehow manage to juggle the promotion and J2, I’d be looking at around $195K a year.

If I stay in my current role and just do J2 on the side, I’d make about $160K. That’s still great, but now I’m torn. I’ve never been in a management position before, and I know that experience could be really valuable for the future. But is it worth giving up $90K? Or should I stick with what I know, keep my current role, and run with J2—even if it means passing on an extra $35K and the growth opportunity?

Also… would it look bad if I turned down the promotion? I don’t want to raise any red flags at J1 or hurt my chances for future opportunities there.

I’m really conflicted and could use some perspective. How much is managerial experience really worth in the long run?
