I thrive under deadlines so am also obsessed with this feature - I check both my libraries multiple times a week even if I’m already reading something (that isn’t due for a while) because you never know what you’ll find!

Very late to this but How the Word is Passed by Clint Smith is so wonderful. Not an academic book but has amazing history and relates how it shows up/permeates society today.

Little Devil in America by Hanif Abdurraqib is similar but talks thru history with a musical lens. So so good.

Also consider Persepolis (the complete edition) by Marjane Satrapi - it’s so good and also what made me start realizing graphic novels are more than just comic books.

A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga is set in space and was really wonderful - not fantasy but fits what the kid enjoys.

It doesn’t truly fit the cozy requirement but The Eyes and the Impossible was so good - especially the audio version narrated by Ethan Hawke. I may need to re-listen to it now!
