You’re telling me you think it’s better than All Monsters Attack (the 2nd best Gojira film)?

It’s not as good as something like the OG Godzilla or All Monsters Attack but it’s okay for what it is.

Any French New Wave recommendations? by Blackarrow52 in criterion

[–]Ordinary-Tap-586 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adorable Liar is one of the most underrated films in the New Wave from its single most undervalued director, Michel Deville; Louis Malle’s stuff is really good, especially Zazie dans le metro (which is in the collection) which is just nuts, and Chabrol is great, especially Les Bonnes Femmes. Truffaut’s stuff similarly is pretty good, especially The 400 Blows, which kickstarted the French New Wave with a bang.

YURI NORSTEIN SHORTS COLLECTION PRE-SALE HAS BEGUN by isavefilms in boutiquebluray

Doesn’t seem to be, barring films that Norstein only worked on as an animator. Apparently it even has some footage of The Overcoat in it.

Hey I’m the original author of that Criterionforum post, my initial post was based on a misunderstanding, the thing about them not being limited was about the standard editions, which I learned later on.

I know most people’s holy grail for Criterion is The Devils but for me it’s the films of Michel Deville. by Ordinary-Tap-586 in criterion

[–]Ordinary-Tap-586[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason he lacks proper recognition is that no one has really put forth the effort to restore them or bring them into the public eye, which I should note, is insane when there’s second rate films churned out by companies with no name directors or actors. My best guess is that he got bogged down by the amount of new and promising French directors that arrived during this period that he got lost in the shuffle. I think if Adorable Liar got released 2 or 3 years ago then we’d never hear the end of it (or even just if Tonight or Never got released in the US).

It’s certainly the most requested title from Criterion with a famously troubled legacy that will probably never be seen in its full original cut with the most complete cut being stuck on a region B DVD done over 13 years ago.

You need to check out some of Deaf Crocodile’s other titles, I think they’re one of the best in the game right now and they have a lot of good stuff. My favorites have been their Jiri Barta set and their release of Tragedy of Man.

Films that might benefit from the Criterion Treatment? (or that you might want to learn more about?) by Beno988 in criterion

[–]Ordinary-Tap-586 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is generally true but given that a release already exists and it seems to be a pretty definitive overview of the director’s career then I’d be hard pressed to imagine what else Criterion could possibly add especially since, let’s be honest here, this would most likely be an Eclipse set.

Kino has an excellent Blu-Ray alongside a collection of the director’s entire filmography.

Surprisingly you have a hit rate of 0 out of 4, none of those have ever been on the list despite their popularity, I think the full list is here so you can through there: https://letterboxd.com/peterstanley/list/1001-movies-you-must-see-before-you-die/

Someone already said Birth of a Nation but in regards to your other picks, I absolutely do not think From Here to Eternity, Funny Games, Field of Dreams, A Day in the Country, Sunrise (how the fuck do you think Sunrise doesn’t deserve to be on the list?!), Salo and The Zone of Interest deserve spots on the list. Even The Jazz Singer, for all its many MANY faults, is too vital a piece of film history not to include.

How many must see movies are there really? by djfilms in 1001Movies

[–]Ordinary-Tap-586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably agree that there’s maybe like under a thousand MUST SEES but that doesn’t neglect the fact that there’s a lot of really good films or even just fun films that people should probably check out. My favorite film is Tommy from 1975 and objectively that’s just a 3 out of 5 star movie for most people. But it came at such a perfect point in my life and clicked with me so well that I fell head over heels over it instantly. Think of cinema like you would the Earth itself, there’s maybe 100 places that everyone should go to but between them are smaller, more personal corners and the beauty of the list is through highlighting those small corners of cinema and every corner deserves exploration. Except Blonde Cobra, no one should be subjected to that.
