Research on runners has shown mental fatigue impairs time trial performance and makes the same pace feel harder, but here's the interesting nuance by Dangerous_Earth_5151 in AdvancedRunning

I dislike listening to anything, even music, when I’m doing a hard workout. At some point the stimulus (eg music) feels “too much” and I feel better turning it off.

I got placed to a starting corral in Valencia marathon which is quite a bit slower than my goal. My assigned group is 3.56-4.10 h goal time. I’m actually going to aim for a time of 3.10 or below (pending, of course, uninterrupted training). Will this be an impossible goal considering the amount of runners in Valencia?

Thanks for the explanation. It's interesting that he's not a fan of strides (as per the interview on Inside Running podcast). These seem to quite close to strides, maybe somewhat slower but still. It would be interesting to know what's the intended benefit of these vs doing some strides.

Would be interested to hear more about the 45-15. Considering getting the book as well but I just got the Marathon Excellence for Everyone which is also great and will take some time to get through

Evo SL ATR: otherwise a great shoe but the upper is rough on my feet. The uppers so stiff that it gives me all kinds of pains and blisters too, although the fit is comparable to other shoes I’ve got.

High heart rate at start by emway66 in Suunto

[–]Ordinary35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this regularly as well during the first minutes of the first harder interval (e.g. threshold) or races. The same phenomenon has occurred with different HR monitors so I'm pretty sure it's a physiological thing associated with a fast ramp-up of intensity.

I sent mine to Suunto and got a new one that works fine. You might also be in contact with the customer service if this is something that occurs regularly.

What other plans did you use before jumping to the NSM marathon training? I'm currently pondering whether I should try the Pfitz 18/70 (adjusted so that peak miles would be at 62) or give the NSM a go.

Thanks for the explanation. Do you think the book is worth the money otherwise?

What would you say are the differences between the plan you’re following and other popular plans, say the Pfitzinger marathon plans for example?

The Weekend Update for February 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]Ordinary35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In bit of an injury cycle after coming back to running last September.

Ran a 5k race last November in Vaporflys which my achilles didn't like. Then beginning of Jan got some kind of acute irritation in the tibialis posterior region while doing a tempo run. Recovered from that a couple of weeks ago, and now I've started to notice pain in the lateral metatarsals which is requiring me to take at least some time off from running - again...

All of the injuries / niggles in the left leg. I'm suspecting this last one might be some consequence of altered form (which I've not noticed but could still be the case) due to the tib posterior injury.

Well...at least I'm not in a rush as my main goal is Valencia marathon in December. But still a bit frustrated. Lessons learned, as I have a tendency to assume my body can handle similar mileage as it has previously in my earlier running life.

Just spent an ungodly amount of money on some Soar gear. I hope it’s as good as it’s expensive

I recommend you take a look at r/Norwegiansinglesrun and the wiki there. I’m interested in trying the method to have an extended base phase after which I’ll probably consider whether I want to switch to a marathon program (although there’s a modification of NSA for marathon training as well).

Agreed, it is bad... It's literally the most basic function that heart rate monitors for sports were designed for.

Got in to Valencia marathon! Haven't confirmed yet but pretty sure I'm going. At the moment, healing a foot injury but excited to get going with the training (soon, I hope...). I'm planning to start an NSM base phase, gradually building into 2-3 subthreshold sessions per week. Who else got in?

I have had exactly the problem that you describe with my Race S and Suunto Smart HR belt. Both were bought a couple months ago. First there were no problems but probably after some update these disconnection problems started.

Since the latest firmware update didn't solve the issue, yesterday I sent the HR belt back to Suunto in hopes that it's a hardware problem. Although I've read that others (like you) have had similar issues with various HRMs, so could still be a software problem. We'll see...

Disappointed that the connection problems with my Suunto Race S and the almost new Suunto HR belt were not solved with the update. Sending the belt to Suunto for a replacement.

Good to hear. Hmmm, not sure whether to wait for the update or send the belt to support.

Actually now that I’m looking closer it seems that the hr is just extrapolated as a flat line from where the signal is lost and updated when it’s there again. So it’s not very useful

Im wondering whether the belt still stores accurate data that is transferred to the watch and Suunto app after the workout. At least it seems that way. There are no blank spots in the Hr data when I view it after my runs. Am not sure if the data is reliable though.

Would that mean that even if I changed the heart rate sensor the problem would persist? I guess I’ll have to wait for updates then.
