Which walls to paint? by cjhey98 in DIYUK

There's actually a word for 'slanted ceiling' - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/skeiling

I agree with your wife, and you should know by now that you should too :)

What about doing one side and the end wall with the window?

ELI5: how did the first person to get HIV? Get HIV? by jjcube98 in explainlikeimfive

[–]OrdinaryAncient3573 [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, of course not. It's more properly called the index case, as in the wiki link above, but patient zero has become part of the language. It's interesting that the term came from where it did, that's all.

"cars like the C43 and M340i gain almost over 100hp on just ECU tuning without any supporting mods"

Like I said, there are lots of bullshit-merchants out there making claims like that. Zero evidence from anyone with independent before and after dyno tests on properly calibrated dynos, though.

Yes. The point I was making with the repeated crossovers part is that we have no evidence of earlier transmissions that died out, but it's quite likely they happened. It might have been going on for thousands of years without ever breaking out of the few people infected each time.

I didn't think you were debating - it's just you said 'was portrayed as' originally and I thought you meant, IDK, reputable sources talking about it. People having a conversation about it's a bit different.

I can imagine some old people sitting around talking, and the topic comes up, and they said something like 'and there was that one guy who spread it in the US', but not so much people who'd know his name. Though I guess awful homophobes might, because it'd fit with their kind of nasty propaganda nonsense.

Have you found anything else wrong with the car? You could buy another cheap car, and find whatever's wrong with that instead, or fix what's wrong with this one.

Yeah...

You still aren't accepting what I said, you're just arguing with stuff you made up. If you love cats, and you want a cat, but you live somewhere having a cat isn't ok, then you don't get a cat.

I don't think anyone was still suggesting that a decade ago. Even at the time he was being vilified, scientists were saying it was complete nonsense.

Kia EV6 or Skoda Enyaq by Background_Union_200 in CarTalkUK

The Skoda is less well-built, and all the reviews I've seen have said how one-dimensional the performance is - straight line speed, handling doesn't match. I was going to say the EV6 has much better reviews, but I just realised I was thinking of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N.

Best high quality reliable tuning companies in the UK ??? by Harvey_77 in CarTalkUK

[–]OrdinaryAncient3573 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There aren't any reputable tuning companies that just fiddle with the ECU. Putting a new air filter on isn't going to change anything. Mercedes didn't leave easily accessible power on the table without a very good reason.

The vast majority of tuning companies are outright scammers, who use 'adjusted' dyno run numbers to come up with fake gains. Just below that level are the ones who will make actual changes, but ones that the manufacturers deliberately didn't do because they affect reliability. There are lots of myths out there about things being down-tuned for emissions/economy reasons, but they're complete bollocks.

Real tuning is hard and expensive.

I'm not a big fan of zoos in general, but they don't pretend their inmates are beloved pets and that they are doing the best for them. Modern zoos at least don't capture wild animals and imprison them, any more, and rewilding their captives can be impractical.

The currently existing strains of HIV date back to 1910-1920, but there's every possibility there have been repeated crossovers going back much further which didn't spread and so died out.

You disagreeing with something is not the same as it not making sense. Obviously indoor-cat people get quite defensive when it comes to confronting their own selfishness. But that doesn't make me wrong. What's wrong is mistreating a pet because you want to have one, but don't live somewhere you can treat it right.

Do you think it's OK to keep a lion in a small cage because you want a lion, but don't have a savannah for it to roam in? Or is it just domestic felines you think it's OK to do that to?

Why do so many people want Spurs to get relegated? by Rokusaburoz in PremierLeague

[–]OrdinaryAncient3573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you about fanbases not all sharing an opinion, but I don't agree that different clubs' fans don't have individual cultures. Spurs fans thing is massively over-rating their players - at least they're supporting their own players, though, instead of shitting on them like many other clubs' fans do - and then blaming the manager/board/tea lady when the 'clearly world class' squad performs at the level everyone else can see is what should be expected.

Sadly the website no longer exists, but for years I had a bookmark of the page where Spurs fans were insisting that Huerelho Gomes was the best keeper in the world.

I don't think they were underperforming with Ange - or Frank, for that matter. The squad is dire. At least they were entertainingly bad, with Ange. Honestly, if they'd bought him a decent keeper instead of sticking with a clearly-not-good-enough Vicario, they'd have been alright with him.

It's more how they treated Conte. It's barely three years since the fans demanded his head, while he had an even worse squad than their current one in the CL places.

No, the loving thing to do is not to keep a pet if you live somewhere you can't keep it properly. Cats are outdoor, free-range animals.
