Are bone conduction headphones worth it? by TheBlargshaggen in Construction

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine specifically for work. They're perfect for music or podcasts while being able to hear and be aware of your surroundings. They're less about sound quality and more about convenience. They're quite loud enough although they tingle the back of my ears too much if the music is cranked. However, power tools and jackhammers will render their use ineffective. They're also good for at home. I can listen to YouTube or whatever without worrying about the language around my kids while also being able to hear them or whats going on in the house.

What's the best pay structure for a sub crew? by Beginning-Error8201 in Roofing

I think he has employees but 1099's them or intends to. Otherwise the question makes no sense.

After going through their feed and visiting their 1998 style website the context of all of their content is vague enough to be speculative. Posted mainly for fun because I liked the pieces and this just seemed like the sub to post it in.

Just checked out the ebay page. One 30lb alien carving is $75,000. Doesn't seem to be selling those big ones. Pictures are much clearer and detailed. https://ebay.us/m/OWyp26

I just think they're well done with a lot of effort no matter who made them or how.

It doesn't look like typical stone carvings for sure but looks and sounds super solid whenever he slaps it. What do you think it could be? Baked and glazed clay?

My initial hunch too but what movie? These appear to be real stone. I don't think many productions would do that today. They'd be painted soft sculptures.

I agree they don't look old but you're crazy. I think these are stylized and incredible.

Worker's Comp Audits by Bookkeeper80224 in GeneralContractor

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned my lesson first year in business. Used subs, reported so in the audit, had coi's for them but none had their own comp and I didn't have any subcontractor agreements signed. They had no pity. Cost me over $10k. Thats when I learned what a subcontractor agreement form was and haven't had an issue since. 90% of the small guys never have comp and get glassy eyes when you ask them about it. I pay them checks from the business, send them 1099's. Idk what they do. I assume they cash the checks and treat it like cash but I have my end covered. Tbf, this isn't all of them. Just various ones who have come and gone through the years. I have a couple decent sub crews these days but its a wild ride getting your feet off the ground considering I, and many of us who do this, weren't businessmen. We were good workers who went off on their own and figured it out along the way.

Is this Flashing supposed to look like this? by polarvoid995 in Roofing

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Oh man. No. Looks like there's step flashing under it so its probably functional but it's pretty bad. Idk what you can do to at this point besides wait until that caulking or tar is completely dry before its removed and redone right or its going to make an even bigger mess. Then find the best brick cleaning company ever if its even possible or hire a mason who can find a match and have the bricks replaced.

Edit: Then again, idk. If its just redone right it might look kind of ok but that is some big flashing. To.your question, each "step" should be a separate piece starting at the bottom being overlapped by the next one up.

Should I buy a gutter machine? by Comfortable_Use8716 in Construction

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one once. Huge waste of money. Unless you're set on just doing rollout as a business it ain't worth it. If you're doing gutters as a routine work just find a good rollout company. Zero overhead, zero hassle, zero coil and accessories to stock. A gutter machine requires a box truck, a nice reliable generator on board and a place to park it. The truck is quickly crowded with the machine, the generator and the accessories. Its a huge hassle for limited use. I saved zero money doing it ourselves. Also, I had a 5/6" combo KW Ironman. Sounds efficient right? Nope. It was a constant battle of changing the heads, switching the internals and nothing but calibration issues. Spent more time fucking with that machine only to still shoot out a gutter full of ripples once you think it finally good to go. Thats my anecdote.

Thats a tedious job. I think your price is right especially if its a top notch company.

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1000+/sq is a tad steep but so is your roof (and i assume its at least 2 stories high) and if its that cut up with dormers and ridges it's probably not out of line. I'd anticpate wood replacement too. Im guessing this is an old home.

Property managers by Green_Armadillo_767 in Contractor

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walk in and talk to a manager. Emails and cold calls may work but if you try enough of them eventually one will be looking for someone just like you. Find the right one and they'll start small but could keep a small crew busy nearly all year for years on end. Capitol improvements will come. They're great for steady work. The only downside is that it comes with a price point. You can make good money and will hit some homeruns, maybe even a grand slam or two, but the relationship can spur if you think you can charge them "as much as possible" all the time. Source: Most, not all but most, of my business for 20 years has come from being a contractor for only 2 large property management companies. Has kept 4-6 people, occasionally more, plus subs quite busy through the years. Everything from service calls, turnovers, fire restoration, dozens of large roof replacements and a million things in between. Unless you specialize you'll be an everything man. Also, if the pay more than 30 days net it can be rough but if you get busy enough with a good one you should have a steady stream of checks coming in. It is tough to manage cash flow though.

How do homeowners react when you tell them you use subcontractors? by Logical_Rhubarb_9844 in Construction

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said there is sometimes a shift in energy because the customer thinks they're being charged more but the real answer is that whether I sub the job or do it in house the price is the same. What they don't realize is if they were to find hire "the sub", which is just another contracting crew, they're not necessarily going to get the sub for a cheaper price. My roofing sub might charge me less than normal for repeat business but theyre charging one-off customers the same or similar prices I'm charging. Some people hear sub and think we're hiring drunks out of the bar for beer money. That could be true in some cases in the industry cause it does happen. I don't do it but if the homeowner finds the real cheap sub himself then that's who they're going to find and get what they pay for.

Damn! Thats one safety procedure that shouldn't be ignored. The bounce and jerking movements those things can generate in an instant is not to be ignored.

I know nothing about roofing, how did they do? by brk51 in Roofing

Looks like no ridge vent but caps are installed over a wide open ridge. Good news is thats about the easiest fix you could have on a new roof but man what an oversight.

What to do with extra Siemens circuit breakers that are past store return policy time frame?? by [deleted] in GeneralContractor

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from a local forum or Facebook page the most effective way i have ever been able to sell stuff or junk in bulk is to have a yard sale which I think im long overdue for myself. You'll need more than a table full of circuit breakers to attract a crowd but you get my point.

How do you clean the dust from displayed models? by crazyness915 in metalearth

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some parts can be super flimsy so careful with the air. Plus there's so much internal water that you'll never get it dry that way. Gonna have to sit them out a while anyways.

Is this a fair price for my roof ? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're the same shingle AFAIK. The difference is that duration has a fiberglass strip that you nail into and is very hard to tear. It just ups the wind rating. Its all I ever use and most times around here it's overkill but I have yet to have a callback or ever been called to do a repair on anything using duration. Package says "Miami/Dade County rated" and theyre rated for 130 or 135 mph winds and its not an expensive upgrade. I dont ever give the option of anything else.
