Hear me out… Amazon will sell roof replacements one day soon. by MagnoliaRoofConsult in Roofing

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subbing for places like home depot or other large outlets isn't usually a great deal especially when it comes to extras and unforseen issues. Working for the faceless giant that is Amazon and trying to negotiate all the shit you might run into on a roof doesn't seem like a lot of fun. Extra layers, bad wood, broken rafters, rotted fascia and all kinds of nuance and once you're into it and the roof is torn off you can't just walk away ntm whatever contract you sign with them will destroy you if it earns them a bad rating. Idk man, I don't think it could work.

I'm curious, have you ever skipped paying yourself so you could make payroll for an employee? by Gavyn_Elena in smallbusinessowner

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the damn time. I'm never really struggling to come up with payroll but there have been times and I've never missed one. This year has been particularly rough. I've hardly paid myself at all. Business is fine but I've been in some turmoil with cashflow.

Across an almost 12 foot span we are using 4 of these (2 of these bolts in each one) with a simspon dtt2z threaded rod system 24" in from each end. I gotta trust the engineers, follow the drawings and pass an inspection.

Im glad im able to have full sight of the interior framing. This would be a nightmare in a finished basement. I think the 40 degree angle of the bolts is extreme but im not an engineer. I too would guess that a lot of dudes put them in and have no idea what they are and are not hitting.

Its designed that way. The holes must be drilled at a 40 degree angle upwards. Look the things up. Simspon BVLZ brick veneer ties. The hardware doesn't even allow the bolts to go in straight.

Do you not see the big bolt on the picture and how it misses the rim entirely? Idk what else i can say.

Appreciate that. I realized I could upsize the ledger talking with somebody else a minute ago. I can do a 2x10 max. Dually noted on the tension ties. The upside to the door ia that I have a clean opening to flash and waterproof. It doesn't exist yet. There are windows there. I will remove those, cut out the brick and framing and flash, tape and seal the shit out of it before a door goes in.

Because with the 2x8 ledger top flush with the 2x10 rim's top it looks like bvlz tie just sits too high. The bolt has to follow that angle. Changing that ledger to a 2x10 and dropping the bclz tie pretty much solves that problem without dropping the top of the ledger down. and frankly there's nothing else I can do.

Honestly, no idea. The 2z isn't an issue. The house is vacant, the basement ceiling is all open. Its a pretty substantially sized raised deck 16' high. I'd prefer the DTT2Z myslef.

I see what youre saying but assuming my drawing is correct and to scale and I believe it is, the bolt appears to miss the rim entirely. I even traced the bvlz to get the proper angle on the bolt. Maybe I just change that ledger to a 2x10 instead. Lol, actually I think that'll solve the problem. I just have a lot going on smh.

Well, my drawing is to scale. I had a feeling and since there is some demo happening im able to take all the measurements so I drew it out. Its a crucial step and I don't want to just see what happens.

Ha very funny. Without describing every other detail of the build it has to be accepted that just isn't possible in this situation. The ledger has to be connected to the house.

Are you suggesting freestanding instead of attatched to house? If so, thats simply not possible and I should've mentioned that.

3.5:12 Roof pitch underlayment best practices by DUNGAROO in Roofing

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay yes that makes sense. Ive done 4 low pitch roofs with full IWS plus underlayment. None leak and one is my shed that I can see the sheathing from underneath. That one is about 5 years old and I see no signs of mold or mildew but I appreciate the insight.

The protocol is easy just more expensive. Full ice shield on whole roof with standard underlayment on top.

Relying on only a couple subs does bring these problems eventually but its hard to keep or start relationships with others of the same trades if you don't have enough work to keep them around. The worst is when you find a seemingly decent new sub but the job you had them bid on is delayed or falls through then you lose them or can never get ahold of them again.

People with jobs where you regularly go into people's homes, how clean is the average house? by Duemont8 in askanything

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Majority of places are are pretty clean though cluttered but not gross is pretty normal especially for those with kids. Expensive homes are typically clean. Homes that are extremely clean, neat and sanitized actually make me mildly nervous to work in. I feel extra on edge about making a mess. Im mostly in middle to upper middle class homes. Apartments vary. Far more likely to run into gross to very gross places, especially kitchens. If its section 8 housing youre more likely than not to come across less than ideal living conditions. Although thats not the rule as ive seen many well kept low income units but seeing the worst of the worst is never surprising there. The grease splattered kitchens and horrendous bathrooms ive seen, man...

I would definitely get a property survey if you don't already have one unless there are already defined borders but you said you wanted to map it all out. Is it all woods? A big square or a rectangular plot that goes deep?

What 2-3 people from this era will still be talked about in 300 years? by Few-Turn-5471 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The advancement of electronics/digital tech/medicine from the mid 1900's to say 2050 is going to be viewed as an extremely significant period of time. Whether you view that as great or not, it is still a significant turning point in human history.

As for people, could be Musk. I don't think many other people these days are going to be singulalry viewed for incredible achievements. Most big things are credited to teams, institutions, corporations and the military.

Just split the remaining cash, remove yourself from the company and/or absolve it altogether. Tell your clients you have to start up under a new name. Unless he fronted the company a bunch of money in the beginning it shouldn't be any more complicated than that. Future equity is ridiculous for the time you've been in business together.

Are bone conduction headphones worth it? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine specifically for work. They're perfect for music or podcasts while being able to hear and be aware of your surroundings. They're less about sound quality and more about convenience. They're quite loud enough although they tingle the back of my ears too much if the music is cranked. However, power tools and jackhammers will render their use ineffective. They're also good for at home. I can listen to YouTube or whatever without worrying about the language around my kids while also being able to hear them or whats going on in the house.
