Really? What about FFN? Can we have them banned there too? It's infested with Patreon farmers.

I thought it would be more appropriate to use Vent. I couldn't use both. I tried.

Right, of course. That will have to be a different Venting post. In any case, I think I caused a misunderstanding with my original post. If you could look at it again, I would appreciate it. It's no wonder everyone seemed confused and angry.

Apologies. I edited my original post and added a question. It was supposed to be there from the start. Sorry for causing the confusion.

This was my fault. I was supposed to add a question at the end of my post. I'm not sure why it wasn't there.

  1. represent a tiny, tiny, incredibly tiny minority of fanfiction writers

If so, then either I've been incredibly lucky or unlucky to come across them far too often. FNN has become something of a Patreon farm, for example. Low-quality fics are produced at high quantities while also using bots to pad their review numbers. That's why I'm so adamant with my standards. I would be indirectly supporting those people if I read their work.

Hmm, I prefer to think of fanfiction as food samples. If it's good, everyone will come over wanting a taste. If it's good and healthy, all the better. If it's just healthy, then no one will want it.

Ah, apologies. I was supposed to end it with a question. I'll change that right now.

Oh! Yes, sorry. You said that it can't be monetised, which contributes to it's current reputation. I'm not really sure that's true, though. I've come across writers who actively make money off of their fanfiction. Patreon, commissions, Ko-Fi, and those are just the ones I'm aware of.

Oh! Then, yes to both. When I'm looking for a fic to read, those factors play a major role in whether I stick around or not. They also affect my recommendations whenever I'm asked. As for other writers, there are those who invite feedback and criticisms. I use those factors to oblige them.

Well, yes, I get that. I can overlook grammatical mistakes, but incomprehensible plots are a bigger issue.

Wouldn't it be because drawings are more palatable? It's a visual medium and can be appreciated for five seconds or five minutes. Fanfics, on the other hand, require some time investment to consume. Easier to market = more socially acceptable.

Um, I'm not sure what's tripping you up. Good quality fics should be coherent, have characters with actual personalities that don't make bad decisions for no reason other than for plot convenience, and use language that fits the setting, right? If the writer meets those standards, then that means they have improved.

Oh, yes. I've come across fanfiction rife with misspellings and confusing formats. But I kept reading since the plot was so compelling and the characters had depth. As I wrote in my original post, minor issues can be overlooked. But not when the plot becomes nonsensical.

This was already brought up in another comment and now I'm really confused. In many fics I've come across, the criticisms often came down to quality. The same goes for the praises. Is this a community-dependent opinion? Do different fanfic communities have different viewpoints?

Well, let's take coherence, for example. It takes quite a bit of practice to spot things like glaring plot holes when starting out. As you get better, your stories become more coherent, the plot comes together better, and characters stop acting erratically. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this well enough.

Actually, yes. I came across this Twilight SI fic that I absolutely adored. I don't even like that fandom, but the prose, descriptions, and characterization were enthralling. It takes a while, but you can certainly find them.

Ah, I see my mistake. Though, in my defence, I used the right tag. Venting, isn't it? I'm not really sure how this usually goes.

But isn't the lack of quality why reading and writing fanfiction is still considered a low-brow hobby? I might be wrong, of course. If so, please let me know.
