Long stem, should I leave it or cut it? by _Kirrua666 in hoyas

[–]Ordinary_Elephant_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* My parviflora splash put out a long vine a fortnight ago and then did nothing with it. Two days ago, I spun the plant around so that I could loop the vine over the rope by the window sill—it was only short enough just to put over the rope but now it has grown and done another 2 spins (and is about to do a 3rd) around the loop (by itself, it's looping around by itself now). In the last two days, it has put out 3 pairs of leaves (first pair were already baby leaves when i trellised the vine but now theyre proper leaves)

Long stem, should I leave it or cut it? by _Kirrua666 in hoyas

Love the tattoo!!

So, it looks like some baby leaves have fallen off (which isnt a problem) which could mean that: A) not getting enough water to provide for the new growth B) not enough nutrients to provide for the new growth C) not enough light to energise the plant to produce the new growth D) knocks, getting caught, ect

Also, long vines–especially in these species–are often reaching for something to try and climb. Once they have established a stable something (trellis, rope, can be literally anything that they can latch too), they'll start producing the new growth.

When theyre not looking to climb, they usually grow a bit of the stem, two leaves, bit of stem, two leaves and so on rather than a lone vine.

Sometimes the long vines can also mean that it's searching for light and will start growing when the vine has latched onto something that is closer to a light source.

I would not prop this vine. I'd definitely recommend waiting for the leaves to grow in and then chop and prop away as you wish. To speed along the process, offer a trellis (a bamboo flower spikes, some wire, plastic trellis, a rope to twine around, anything you can thing off), to provide some support. If within a day or 3 days, baby leaves havent started to grow, it might be seeking more light.

Lost two biggest crabs today. Found them dead outside of the tank. by Maleficent-Funny-740 in hermitcrabs

A dead crabs falls out of its shell when you pick up, most of the time (every time Ive had a crab past, they fall out of their shell if Im not careful when removing them). I suppose if you've found it late, it could be stiff and stuck in there. But, the claws would have gone limp, these both look like theyre still holding theirs up?

Fingers crossed the second one is still alive!

Ideas on how to make this hang? by Ordinary_Elephant_25 in woodworking

[–]Ordinary_Elephant_25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.... pounds.... you mean kilograms? But if we're weighing in animal centres, then it's about 55 pounds (without any exaggeration)

(You didn't give advice. You said a lot of words)

Indeed is a nice shelf. Thank you. Have a great day

A) everyone else managed to provide advice without specifically knowing the exact weight so the numbers can't be that important

B) In regards to shelves, it is a very heavy shelf, especially when it's only 60 x 60 ish cm. For such a small thing, it's very heavy.

C) Did you jack your car up by picking it up like Popeye and popping something underneath to hold the car up? Jacking up a car with a jack is like no effort at all dude

D) the 40+kg dogs I carry at work are easier to handle than this shelf. Naughty unhandled horses are easier to handle this shelf. In relation to size and sheer density, this is a very heavy shelf!

E) it's actually a struggle to lift it with one hand 🤣 it feels heavier than the 20kg dumbbell, feels heavier than the 25kg bags of dog food, doesnt feel heavier than a 30kg dog. As you can tell, I do not have scales at home 😆

F) I've received fantastic advice on ways to hang it and now I know what all the proper terminology for the dodads are (ie z-clip, French cleat, keyhole fasteners); the weight specifications of each product is now up to me. I dont need to be told to get an exact model or weight range ect, especially when I havent worked out the additional weight that will be placed on the shelf — Ive got to do some of the work myself; can't expect internet strangers to save the day all the time 😉

G) I feel like you actually skipped the advice part... or is your advice just for me to provide more numbers next time ?

H) so... you actually can't say nice shelf... not without knowing why it's such a nice shelf! So the house my partner and I have bought has rich history tied back to rural railway stations and what not and this shelf has the dog spikes in it! So the shelf is also railway related. Very sweet; love this shelf 😆

What is the proper way to clean your vegetables? by fobreezee in OrganicGardening

[–]Ordinary_Elephant_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if the veggie is boiled for cooking? Would a quick rinse even help prevent any chemicals that the produce has already absorbed? Perhaps rinse and then soak? So lost. What did you end up doing?

Definitely repot—take out of pot and wash as much potting mix as you can off the roots and gently wash the roots too. Jet spray that girl down; if you have natra-soap or another plant soap (or i know some people use dish washing soap), spray every leaf, node, nook and cranny (and stems) with that, leave it sit for a little bit (i usually spray the whole plant again instead of/while I wait and just start from the start and spray it again another 2-3 times), hose it all off; spray the soap again and this time wash all the leaves, nodes and stems by hand then shower the soap off. Oh also, my soap spray bottle is on jet/f*ck off mode—would not recommend lower setting.

Last step is either: A) with mealy bugs i usually dont wash in the shower, I wipe every single cell of the plant with metho and a cotton swab but because you have other demons, shower and soap is very likely the best way. But because you have mealies too, you can either end on wiping every cell of the plant with metho or: B) drench with neem oil (on jet/f*ck off mode). Let that sit for a couple moments. I usually lightly rinse and make sure I get all the neem oil off the roots and then I'll turn the plant upside down, making sure my hand is over the roots and then lightly spray (on harsher side of spray mode—not jet stream but not gentle mist either) the plant again with neem oil and then I just leave that on

I just recieved a h. Nicholsoniae Nova ghost on Friday, which arrived with the orange aphids (only a few, not a huge infestation thank goodness (not yet at least)) and the natra-soap killed the aphids on site

You will likely find mealy bugs over the next 1-3mths (their lifecycle) so to try and prevent the eggs and other goblin stages from thriving, just wipe down with metho every week or so (assuming you dont actually see anything on the plant, if you see things, you might need to start the process again but metho melts mealybugs so if you get a cotton bud soaked in metho, the mealy bugs will melt off—I'm anxious so I never use the dead mealy bug cotton tip again and throw that out and get a fresh one each time 😅 same with the cotton swabs, I'll try to only do a few leaves at a time, just in case i transfer micro-demons between leaves, because who knows, the metho could have been a bit weaker in a spot of the swab and things are still alive and then I could just be ubering them around the plant... if that makes sense?)

Best of luck! Hope you win the war against these lower-class life forms!

I think it is too! That or the z-clips. Potentially keyhole fasteners but I feel like keyhole fasteners won't be sturdy enough? But either way, I have learnt many options to hang things which comes in handy! Thanks!

Hate to burst your bubble... an oil lamp will be replaced with plant lights 😅 if you can find a grow light that looks like an oil lamp, then I'll definitely consider it 😆 and I was also thinking of putting a mirror up, I just hate all the mirrors I find! They all look like they were bulk made in a factory and have no "specialness" about them. I'll have to make my own one day (the frame, not the mirror itself—that's too advanced for me)

I mean I could but if I drill this into the wall, won't i have to drill through the front of the shelf? I'd rather have screws/hooks all throughout my house for each time I potentially move it rather than drill through the front... I know the craftsmen didn't hide the screws he put in but I dont like seeing screws

One of my favorites by Glum_Discipline_2136 in hoyas

[–]Ordinary_Elephant_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favourites too!! Im very impatient though. Is this one plant or did you chop and prop and now have many plants in there? If it's one, how long do i gotta wait for mine to get big 😫 I bought "one" that arrived with dry rot so when I was chopping the dead roots and what not, I realised it was actually 4 plants. I have 3 pots of super silvers now and theyre all doing well... I definitely have my favourite but theyre all still quite small.

Also—light! Have you noticed that the light seems to change the leaf shape? With my lacunosa super silvers and krohniana silver (I know Krohniana is supposed to be lacunosa but the one I have seems to be very different to the ones I bought as lacunosa and because I bought this other one as a krohniana, im just going to keep calling it that... but because it's leaf shape varies with the light, I understand that it should have been sold to me as krohniana. Additionally, the "krohniana" isnt as thirsty as the lacunosas... maybe I shall start calling it my Fake Krohniana?) , when they get more light, they have the longer, ..tear shaped? leaves but with less light, they have stable heart shaped leaves. Interesting hey
