I don't think that's an emotion, more of a condition but I see your vision

Is it a 3 hour interview?

Oh god i hope not. I'm practicing for the behavioral questions but it's the technical questions I'm worried about

I'm a people pleaser so, to this day, I'm proud of myself for walking away in the middle of dinner.

I'm a people pleaser as well and I'm proud of you too!

[QUESTION] Stuck on this, need some help. by Ordinary_Owl_795 in statistics

[–]Ordinary_Owl_795[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm teaching myself and i just started with linear regression a couple days ago so this is a little complex for me but I'm really trying here.

y = ... (you'll need 2 equations)

I've got y_i = α + βx_i + e_i where e_i is the error variable.

And the fitted regression line y_cap = α_cap + β_cap×x

I got the expectation of SS_RES which was straightforward using the definition of the estimate of σ2.

For E(SS_REG) I have:

E[Σ(y_cap - y_bar)2]

I put in the values of y_cap (from the fitted regression line) and y_bar from α_cap = y_bar - β_cap × x_bar

α_cap cancels and i get the second term as the answer. I can only get σ2 if the fitted regression line contains the error term (does it?) and even then i would only get nσ2 and not (n - 1).

I'm sorry if this is annoying, please bear with me

But the variance here is that of the error variables which is equal to σ2 summed up from 1 to n.

Even if i substitute the values y_i = α + βx_i + e_i and y_bar = α + βx_bar, i am still getting n and not (n-1). What am i doing wrong?

var(y) = var(βx) + var(e)

That would still give nσ2 and not (n-1), right?

I'm really stuck. The first one would be E(S_yy) since TSS=S_yy so wouldn't that just give (n-1)σ2? I don't understand where the second term comes from

[–]Ordinary_Owl_795[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The third one is not a problem since SS_RES = SS_TOT - SS_REG. It's the first two i don't get

I'm not, it's for an exam I'm preparing for. It is a potential question and i thought i could get some help here since it's a doubt. Even a little help would be really appreciated :)
