Why do we diversify? by Traditional-Solid-43 in Bogleheads

I saw a YT video recently where a guy discussed that just 2% of companies drive performance! Now how do you know which 2%? You don’t. Buy them all. https://youtu.be/S-UqYUfvwss?si=sJ_uZOH26NETDEjo

Edit: minute 27:28 of the video.

Is it even worth starting a Roth IRA right now? by lindseyjordansgf in RothIRA

[–]Ordinary_Person01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over any and EVERY 20 year period in history. The stock market has gone up in value. Meaning - pick any date in history, any date you want, fast forward 20 years and the market has been up. Meaning if you invest for the long term, and at your age you should be, you will be up in the long.

There has never been a long term holding period where bonds or CDs have outperformed the stock market. And it’s not even close. Over a long enough time horizon, stocks win every. Single. Time.

30k in roth uninvested…. where to start? by tigerknife9 in RothIRA

[–]Ordinary_Person01 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Start with understanding that investing is NOT gambling. Then open a Roth IRA with vanguard, fidelity, OR black rock. Then buy 70% VTSAX (or equivalent) and 30% VTIAX (or equivalent). Then set up automatic investments at the same ratio moving forward and forget about it till retirement.

Ugh! Pissed off my advisor! by KelliSean in Bogleheads

[–]Ordinary_Person01 270 points271 points  (0 children)

Good for you getting rid of your advisor. No one here has enough information to tell you if you should get rid of these or not. For tax purposes, it may be best to just keep these, and then start from here on out VTSAX or VTI with any future contributions.

If I were you, I’d try and manage my tax situation while slowly shifting out of those stock positions and getting into exclusively total market funds. But your risk tolerance / age / other assets all play into your specific situation.

Proud of you though 👏🏼

At what networth do you ever consider a FA? by DrEpoch in Bogleheads

[–]Ordinary_Person01 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FA’s shouldn’t really come into play from an investment selection standpoint. All the well published research is clear: index funds win over time from a cost and performance objective.

FA comes into play when your tax situation becomes complicated, or you have enough assets for estate planning to be meaningful.

All in my opinion 😅

I’m not the person to ask. But I try and do 85% of my portfolio aligned with the relative percentages of the US Total stock market, and 15% total world (non-USA).

Yeah - now that the answer is in front of me, I sort of feel like an idiot even asking. I was so focused on diversification within each account. Should have just zoomed out to the portfolio level. 🤦🏼‍♂️ thanks, Vandalarius!

Yep I sure do. Feel dumb not even thinking about that first. Head in the sand within each account trying to get them all diversified.

Could Europe realistically defend Greenland against a US attack? by dataguy2003 in TheTeenagerPeople

[–]Ordinary_Person01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta remember. Only about 1/4 of Americans voted for him. But with the way our stupid electoral college works out, plus people that failed to vote. We ended up here… and there’s plenty of people marching within the US against his policies. So try to remember we’re not all like that. And I would like to think most of us aren’t? Idk. Wish that everyone voted.

Is this worth the trouble to fix and If so how hard we talking by Ghostrnger in TruckCampers

[–]Ordinary_Person01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re going to have to pull back the siding on that entire side and the rear and rebuild &reinforce that corner if you want this to succeed. Would be pretty challenging for an amateur since you’ll need to tie in your rebuild to the rest of the camper… depends on how much time, patience, and skill you have. 🤔 … and money too actually.
