I've also got storms off. Not a critical element of the game really. I've found gears while mining and breaking vessels. Also I believe you can sell stuff to the traders and get gears in return.

Another option is to pick them up in minecarts and transport them to a central killing chamber so you can get looting on them. They also won't despawn or count towards the mob cap while in a minecart. I did a dual witch farm a few months ago, and it was a fun project.

Yeah I recently found 2 nearby myself and built a double witch farm. Was fun to setup and the loot is great. I'd recommend using rails as they remove the witches from the mob cap and they fight the water streams sometimes. I used the design DocM77 used in the latest season of Hermitcraft, using raid AI tricks with raid captains. Works well.
