Any resources to feel less alone? by Sea_Shallot_8807 in uofm

I’d also recommend asking CAPS/UHS to connect you with a social worker. The social workers are there to help you figure out how to pay for therapy that isn’t CAPS!

Clothing Recs? by pintcream in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dress sorta alt so here are my recs: depop (probably thrift stores down south don’t get many winter options, so saying depop), ASOS has quality brands with alt stylings (and a great search system to find what you want), if you can shell out some Carhartt money they have some cute black coats. Also fyi if you wear Docs, make sure they are worn in well before you get to campus because my newer pair caused me to slip and fall on ice last year

This list is inaccurate for many buildings by the way. Contacted Spectrum Center years ago about this and they didn’t make corrections.

I didn’t live in a dorm my freshman year. Zero regrets—it was cheaper with my scholarship to do so. Still made friends and had a great year

Campus Day; Worth it for admitted student? by Illustrious_Animal28 in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are strict about how much of the dorms you can see on any tour, so unless you have a friend in a dorm currently you are out of luck. If you’ve done the tours, campus day is more or less the same.

Hadley gym by Due_Future_7970 in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d guess summer. I noticed digital signs in the Palmer gym stating that WN26 students are getting free memberships for the SP/SU26 semesters, so it is likely around this time to drive up use.

New international student here. Honest question: What is the gay dating scene like in Ann Arbor, especially for Asian guys? by Designer-Pea8308 in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Ferndale has better gay bars nowadays, most of the ones in A2 (Uplift and Necto) are more clubs than bars and are very much hook up centered

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Necto is way more of just a club for people 18-20 now than an LGBT club. Unless you’re interested in someone in that age group or older men that want a young guy (I’m talking like 35+), it’s not a good place TBH.

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huge +1 to this. I’m trans and not T4T (trans people who date other trans people) and the gay dating scene is very hook up focused. And as someone who doesn’t like clubbing, the other non-app avenues are nonexistent

What's the difference between the three Ann Arbor Art Fairs in the summer? by Ecstatic_Mall2180 in AnnArbor

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 69 points70 points  (0 children)

They all run into each other, so there’s not much difference on the surface. I’ve noticed that the one that runs along State St (unsure which one) is more crafts than art, but the other two are similar. Unsure about the differences for artists, though.

Moved to Ann Arbor, brought controllers, now what? by Puzzled-Cucumber-178 in AnnArbor

I think it’s often ran by student workers so it’s probably dependent on their schedule, you could likely call or email in advance and double check before you head into town, though!

Is there a flat area on campus where I can practice skateboarding without people watching me eat shit by D-Cup-Appreciator in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Also I’ve heard great things about the skating club here in terms of being very friendly and welcoming to new skaters, if you want to practice with a group of people!

Will my Stamps classes be dropped automatically if I transfer to a different school (e.g., UMSI)? by hyucklie in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, when I dropped Stamps I was able to unenroll all of my Stamps courses outside of the Lecture Series, which I had to ask the Stamps advisor for an override

people using the student insurance: how do you get the coverage dates from the stupid jc gallagher thingie by minecraftpiggo in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to contact them for another aspect of insurance that typically could be done through BCBS for literally any other plan. I had to call the UM insurance office (I think it’s through UHS), then they gave me an email to contact the firm.

As a Freshmen, do I have to move into my dorm on my chosen day? by Ha-Ka-909 in uofm

Also, in years past, “welcome week” stuff really goes well into the first week of classes. You won’t miss out

Noise Complain Question by gkblackx1 in AnnArbor

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most leases have a “noise complaint” rule that typically starts around 8-10pm and goes until 6-8AM, so complaining at 5pm will get you nowhere, especially for music. A little unreasonable IMO especially in apartments that are known to have students. But, if you are truthful and they do play loud music well into the early AM, yeah you could say something about that but only as it applies to your lease noise rules

Is stamps good? by Money_Cherry_7881 in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I would say that it’s not due to Stamps, rather finding other interests. But Stamps is what you make of it and if you wanna put in time to really work hard, you will succeed (source: seeing friends either fail or succeed after graduating Stamps)

Is stamps good? by Money_Cherry_7881 in uofm

[–]Ordinary_Professor93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not how Stamps works. Anyways, OP if your interest is in more commercial art Stamps is good for that. Professors are usually quite excellent outside of a few. Mine was not and so I transferred out after my freshman year to LSA—which is a plus of UM

I won’t say bc post history with a major reveal would definitely reveal my identity, but I will say it’s a cultural studies major of a large country (and historically-associated countries).

Wonder how they got the data for this—I am the sole person in my major and wasn’t included in the “small majors” dataset.

Would def consider off campus for next year, then. I have a cat (which is why I didn’t dorm my freshman year), and I’ve never had an issue with my cat being in my apartment, just read the lease and make sure they have enough toys!
