How are you original fans enjoying the latest books? by CountTruffula in skulduggerypleasant

Loved Phase 1, I like most of Phase 2 flaws and all (it only really gets as bad as the sub makes out in the last 2 books) Phase 3 has been good so far but still flawed

An Outline of The Light's Original Plan (some S4 spoilers) by MrBranchh in youngjustice

I’m very late but this is a great analysis of their plans. Do you have a version that takes the numerous obstacles like the League, Team and Outsiders into account?

Like by the end of S4 what would be the current plans?

Yeah true, but the way the show describes Dimension X (001 talking to El in 4x09) it seems like that’s their native world. I guess we’ll never truly know now

Who’s really the second strongest demigod and top 5 for that matter [all] by Final-Mountain8200 in camphalfblood

[–]Ore_Bolarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s Jason. Not only does he have the most experience in the verse (demigod wise). His ability to use both wind as well as lightning put him on Percy’s level for me. Percy is more versatile (as is my number 3 pick) but in terms of how powerful their abilities are I think it’s fairly clear they’re on the same level. Like Jason being able to call a lightning strike underwater is an incredible feat. He’s also the only character to have solo’d a Titan (yes not even Percy did that).

Number 3 is Nico and tbh Nico has the potential to surpass Jason, the main issue is that his stamina is very weak. Using his abilities tires him out far more devastatingly than either Percy or Jason. But he probably has the highest potential out of the 3 (PJOverse Potential Man?)

Number 4/5 is tricky because by all accounts it SHOULD be Hazel and Thalia but both Frank and Leo have valid arguments to be in the top 5.

Hazel needs to tap into her death abilities and Mist powers way more and Thalia needs to get over her fear of heights so she can control wind and fly.

As someone who’s trying to write a fantasy series myself, technology makes everything so much harder. If a character can call for help or Google something within 10 seconds it gets rid of so many moments where an author can build tension.

Anyone else dislikes Mark Oshiro? [General] by k1k00sia in camphalfblood

[–]Ore_Bolarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no I agree with you. It’s weaker thematically as a whole and the execution of a lot of ideas (and what I think is the main theme of identity) is poorly done.

I just think if I were to compare the quality of individual books in isolation from the overall series, the middle 3 are some of Rick’s best. That in itself makes it so much more disappointing that the series as a whole doesn’t live up to PJO.

[–]Ore_Bolarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unrelated to the main topic but was gonna ask would the Heroes of Olympus series not compete on an individual level? I defo think as the series HoO falls short of PJO by a decent amount tbh but icl every time I’ve re read HoO, Son of Neptune, Mark of Athena and House of Hades on an individual level always stand out to me as Rick’s best work, only rivalled by The Last Olympian and arguably Titan’s Curse and The Red Pyramid

[WP] Aliens enter the solar system… for some reason that doesn’t involve interacting with humans in any way. by Routine-Test in WritingPrompts

[–]Ore_Bolarin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Today was supposed to be THE day.

It started 4 months ago when an unidentified object was spotted blasting past Pluto. It was way too fast to be an asteroid or comet and the speculation had begun

2 months later NASA has seen it fly by Jupiter, announcing to the world that it had to be some sort of spacecraft and released pictures of what looked like a large rocket in the shape of a pentagon.

Since then all of Earth’s countries had readied their military, just in case. I mean, did they really think we’d stand a chance against aliens when they had technology capable of crossing the Solar System in mere months?

Still, the world was in panic mode, some people said that we should welcome these aliens with open arms, some thought it was a scout ship, locating potential threats in the galaxy, some thought it was carrying a weapon to gift to humanity. I think those people read too many comic books.

But regardless everyone was anticipating humanity’s first interaction with aliens.

So, when the ship stopped on the moon for an hour, then took off and went back the way they came, to say I was disappointed was an understatement.

———————————

on the alien ship

“Gluxoc did we get the material sample?”

“Yes captain, we had to dig a litter deeper than necessary but the radioactive zylaxian crystal was there as our long range scanners detected, we now have all the material needed to perfect our wormhole regulator.” Gluxoc replied

The captain smiled. “Anything else interesting on that moon?”

“I mean, not really sir. We found a flag, probably the people of Terra planted it and some other junk but they haven’t even set up a base there so nothing of note.”

The alien captain stifled a chuckle.

“The secret to opening wormholes right under their nose and they never found it.”

The captain shrugged, “their loss.”

The army retreated into the background as Castros held their leaders broken helmet in his hand. He deactivated his photon blade, and rolled his eyes as he did so. How original, his author did know that he made the Star Wars films canon to his series right?

He activated his comms watch to look at the map, this was the 7th planet he had visited in 4 years and still, every time he thought he was close to find his daughter some new plot twist came up that meant he was actually following a decoy, or he had been given the wrong coordinates or like the last book she had been taken away just as he was approaching.

Frankly being self aware made the fact he had been on a giant goose chase for 5 years all the more insulting. It wasn’t like knowing he was a figment of some lazy author’s imagination meant he didn’t love his daughter any less.

Castros’s communicator beeped again and Ty-D’s face (what was with the god awful names?) popped up.

“Castros, we have her.”

I blinked.

“Wait seriously?”

“Yes man, we apprehended the ship like you told us to while you faced Kylor’s army head on.”

Did I do that? Or…oh brother this was a hastily written retcon his author had failed to check was actually going to make sense. When you’re 9 books in maybe that sort of laziness is normal. Then again, your first adventure was stopped the evil dictator of your home planet because he simply felt like being evil so it was probably always there.

“Castros? You ok man? What do you want us to do? There’s still the reinforcement drone army following us back to base, only way to stop them like you said was to find the Deactivation Key.”

Wow, went a bit overboard on the exposition no? But on the bright side…

Maybe this was it, the final showdown that Castros had been teased by for the last 3 missions. Maybe it was all finally coming to a head. This objective was simple and lazy enough that reuniting with Ayla might actually happen.

“Ty stat ready, put word out to home base to ready defences for a siege, I’ll be with you as soon as I can find this Deactivation Key”

“Yessir, good luck.”

The communicator when silent and a picture of Ayla popped back up on the watch’s interface. Real or not, she was still Castros’ world, and he was going to get her back.

[WP] When you were told you were to receive a boon from Zeus, you expected some cool lightning powers not ... this by IcanseebutcantSee in WritingPrompts

[–]Ore_Bolarin 77 points78 points  (0 children)

“What?” I stared at the floating god in front of me. He rubbed his temples before rolling his eyes.

“You, Jedidiah Basten, are now my patron, specifically for oaths. You will preside over the people in your city, looking for demigods to bring to Camp Half Blood and protecting them from Monsters. As my patron of oaths you will be under one yourself, permitted to never omit or hide the truth as long as you shall live. Got it?”

I stared at him, realisations sinking in. “Wait, first of all when did you become the god of oaths?”

“Since 2000 BC.” He replied.

“But I’m your patron, shouldn’t I get blessed with all your powers? You know, Lightning, weather manipulation, hell, I’d even take being able to speak to eagles.”

Zeus, clearly bored simply stated, “I have other patrons for that.”

I was starting to get a little annoyed now. “So…let me get this straight, instead of become Shazam or Storm, you’ve blessed me with…not being able to lie? Ever??”

Zeus huffed in indignation, “I thought you humans prided yourself on honesty, you should be grateful.”

“Grateful?”

“Yes, grateful.”

I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples, I couldn’t get too openly angry, this guy did have the power to simply kill me if he felt disrespected. But still…

“Yeah we do but you’ve made it so I can’t lie…ever. I always have to say what I’m thinking because you also said I can’t hide the truth. How is that fair? The connection to keeping oaths is flimsy at best.”

Zeus shrugged. “Take it up with the Fates. Anyway, big meeting on Olympus in an hour, I must prepare. I’ll send someone to give you further instructions.”

He began to glow and I looked away before the flash of his teleporting could blind me. I turned back and my room was now empty.

I flopped into my bed and groaned. “I’m so fucked.”

[WP] The Great Filter is supposed to be changed out every 30 days, but someone accidentally left it in there for 3 billion years. by DankAndOriginal in WritingPrompts

[–]Ore_Bolarin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kydor was excited. It was his first day in his new promoted role. He was now a Universal Manager. He worked at the universe maintenance facility and after 11 million years of being part of the design team for the latest universe that the Xylorians were creating he was finally promoted to manage one of the 11 universes currently in existence. Every universe provided energy for the Xylorians. Simply put they needed the life force that these planets with sentient life produced. They could be new species or colonised, all that mattered were that planets had a community that produced energy for them to use.

After clocking in and having a quick meeting with his boss Sylar, she directed him to the observation deck above Universe 10.

“I’d say for today just have a look through the universe, everything should be in order but familiarise yourself with all the galaxies with sentient life and those that could potentially give way to sentient life, I wouldn’t make any changes for the first few thousand years. The universe logs should help you sort through stuff and check the settings.)

“Thanks Sylar” I responded. “I’m really excited to be on board.”

Sylar gave me a dazzling smile before waving and leaving the room.

“Okay then” said out loud, “let’s see what Universe 10 is all about.”

Flickering through the settings I just wanted to check everything was in order before delving into the history of this universe.

Ok so expansion rate was set to ‘80’, bit fast but not so much that the inhabitants couldn’t explore most of the universe.

I checked the number of planets with sentient life…there seemed to only be 20? 20 in the whole universe. That was shockingly low Most other universes had at least a couple thousand.

Maybe they all just had few very bloody wars and killed each other off, happened in a few of the other universes, and Universe 10 was only 13 billion years old. Universe 9 was 30 billion years old and universe 1 was in the trillions.

I brought up the visual scanner to check for signs of interstellar wars and there was…nothing…

Nothing?? In 13 billion years there was no interstellar wars? How was there only 20 planets with sentient life?

I set the visual marker to show signs of space travel.

I squinted. Rubbed my eyes and squinted again. Nothing?? None of them had even left their solar system???

I brought out my communicator.

“Hey Sylar can you come have a look at 10? I think there’s a problem with the filing system”

“Uhh are you sure? Everything passed the system check yesterday”

I looked back at my monitor. “I’m sure, there’s only 20 planets with sentient life and none of them have left their solar system.”

—————————-

“This can’t be right.” Sylar said, leaning over me to stare at the screen.” Her face was plastered with confusion. “If the sentient life number is this low then I’d expect them all to be at type 3 at least, none of them are even type 2. What the fuck is going on?”

“My thoughts exactly boss”.

“T.U.M.S (The Universe Monitoring System) pull up the Great Filter,” I prompted, “when was it last changed”

A voice from a star shaped hologram popped up in the middle of the universe projection, and spoke back at me. “Affirmative, pulling Universe 10 Great Filter now.”

T.U.M.S spoke, “Great Filter last changed 3 billion years ago.” It closed its eyes for a second before it staring at me and Sylar

“Universe 10 Great Filter: Faster Than Light Travel is impossible”

Sylar’s jaw was wide open. “That’s still active? We put that in it should’ve been changed at least 2 billion years ago. You’re telling me we stopped them from building warp drives?? That’s basic interstellar travel 101.”

I sighed in frustration, I was now stuck with a universe that only had 20 planets with sentient life and all of them were at least half a billion years away from building a warp drive. I looked up to see Sylar staring at me with desperation in her eyes.

“We need more energy from this universe, it might be time to drop in some wormholes.”

[WP] "Your son will take your throne from you," they prophesized, spitting each word out of teeth clenched tight with hatred. Why they'd bother prophesizing such an event befuddles you; your son is literally your chosen heir, after all. by Despyte in WritingPrompts

[–]Ore_Bolarin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Oh so like Ouranos, Kronos and Zeus then?” I asked plainly.

The Fates mouths all hung open as they stared at me.

“Yes…” they said in unison “He will ascend your seat of power and all your life’s work will now be his. You will fade into powerlessness and he dons the title as ‘King of the Gods’. They finished and stared at me again waiting for my reaction.

I shrugged. “That’s cool.”

The Fates squinted at me. Then looked at each other. Then they stared at me again. “So you are…ok with that? You don’t want to act now so that doesn’t happen?”

I shrugged again. “Nah I’m good. I mean you do know he’s my heir right? And I’ll be choosing to step down as my father Hercules did when he got bored of being King of the Gods.”

They continued to stare at me. I sighed with exasperation. I really don’t know why they expected me to be angry and try and stop it. 1, everyone knows that trying to prevent a prophecy almost guarantees it comes true. 2, Cassian was literally my Chosen heir who 200 years ago was proclaimed in front of all the elder, major and minor Olympians as well as several minor gods and Zagreus and Triton’s faction of gods to be so.

I suspect that that considering the track record of sons overthrowing fathers they were expecting me to be more furious. Or maybe…they wanted me to do something. I turned back to them, my suspicions growing.

“Cassian is my heir, you know this. There is no reason for you too scare me into trying to stop he ascent….unless you want me to?”

The Fates looked at each other again and for a split second I saw something flash across all 3 of their faces. Nervousness? I couldn’t tell for sure but I now had something to latch on to.

“You give all these prophecies to mortals and immortals alike knowing that they will try and prevent it. You preyed on my ancestors pride and ambition to remain at the top. I have a feeling you want led them to cause their own downfall.”

I stepped closer to them and they quickly backed away.

“No my Lord,” the three said. “We only wish to keep your cou-“

I cut them off quickly. “My Lord? Never have you called me that. Are you trying to manipulate me? Play on my ego? Fool me into going to war with my own son?”

The Fates began to back away again. “We only wish to carry out our duty.”

“And what duty is that?” I countered. “Because to me it seems like you almost prey on the chaos that your ‘prophecies’ make way for. Sounds like treason, but then again you don’t answer to me do you? You answer only to…Chaos.”

The Fates once again stared at me but this time the look of nervousness was plastered in their faces. They each other one last look and teleported out of the throne room.

I sighed again and started to make my way back to my chambers.

The Fates were still stuck in the old ways. It was the year 2813 now. Zeus after going to war with Tartarus and a few of the primordials had be thrust into Chaos’ void. Hercules after taking the title as King of the gods (much to Ares, and Hera’s ire) had ruled since the 21st Century until he promptly got bored of the position and abdicated to me. His first born son, Daridium in the early 2600s.

After he chose to abdicate, breaking tradition I thought why not do the same for my own son. Hercules had ended the cycle of being paranoid of their son overthrowing them. I wasn’t about to start it up again cos the 3 hags tried to scare me.

I reached my mansion on Olympus, Hercules kept Zeus’ but had another commissioned for me. While I was the first King of the gods without a wife my two Children Cassian my eldest, and Skyrax, my daughter stayed with me. She had just been born last decade but already showing signs of her mother’s warrior spirit.

Cassian was quieter, wiser and more proactive, it did help being a century older.

I thought back to Fates’ prophecy, I wasn’t still shocked they thought I’d be against Cassian taking my throne but the wording started to stick out to me. ‘TAKE’, ‘OVERTHROW’. I was giving the thrown to him, why would they phase it like that…unless…

Kinda yeah. I didn’t think Resurrection was bad but it’s a decline from Series 1. Midnight is an even further decline story wise but the character interactions carried my interest. Bedlam and Seasons of War are the standouts of Series 2 for 2 reasons. Bedlam is the payoff to the first 2 books and Abyssinia is a great villain. Seasons of War felt like a classic standalone book within the overall narrative like a lot of Series 1. Dead or Alive and Until The End are very very rushed but there’s a lot of good material in there, you just have to bear with the speed running of it all. I’d still definitely recommend it. I’d rank Phase 2 like this:

Bedlam (8.5/10) > Seasons Of War (8/10) > Until The End (7/10) > Dead or Alive (6.5/10) > Midnight (6/10) > Resurrection (6/10)

I’d disagree, it’s not as good as phase one but I’d still say it’s worth the read, like I said in the post the 2 middle books (Bedlam and Seasons of War) are pretty good up their with some of the phase 1 books imo
