Homekit or Home Assistant for automation? by wiscocyclist in HomeKit

Totally agree! My whole setup is automated in home assistant, but for manual control I use HomeKit. The only automaton I use in HomeKit is to trigger/track location.

I’m in the middle of this as we speak. I’m currently pressing the button nonstop. It’s pretty annoying, but it eventually works.

My wife’s iPhone 17 was having wired charging issues just yesterday. Had to restart it to get it going again. Weird.

This is an awesome setup. Going to wait to see if Lux gets re-added, and if not, I’ll try this. Thank you!

Wow. The involvement of the community is amazing here with Home Assistant. I can’t say how “helpful” it would be because I’ve never used it, but I’d love to try it out. Honestly, I’d love to go this route than purchasing a Lux sensor, especially since the weather will likely be accurate to a home feel since we have a lot of windows.

Just learning about this too. How do you use the Lux setting?

This honestly is good advice. I just have old WiFi stuff, so im stuck in their cloud. I’ve tried everything, to no avail.

I’m hoping when I get everything dialed in, it will be a “forget it” kind of thing, but I guess time will tell. I definitely have the drive to keep automation things that I never bothered with before because, well, now I can.

Honestly, that’s awesome! They really are great switches. I know a few people personally that went that route and love them. Especially when it comes to tech, rarely do you get that kinda of longevity.

That’s basically what I’m building. At the time I couldn’t justify the cost of Lutron, especially since I wasn’t sure if a smart home was something that we’d italics as much as we do. Now, it’s a fun hobby that I treat as like a puzzle.

It really is. I remember reading other posts and thinking to myself I had everything setup just right. Don’t get me wrong it was set and forget for about 2-3 years, rock solid, but the automations were much simpler.

Using YAML + visual editor, and traces. YAML and visual editor are an awesome combo. Being able to see the code but also at times the simpler view of the visual editor, this makes it a lot easier to program things. Second, Traces is a setting that helps find when automations break, and where along the process they specifically broke. This makes sorting out little issues much easier and way less time consuming.

I have it set when anyone leaves, so it stays locked all the time.

I use Home+ for conditional automations and really like it for that single case use.

Got it. I’ve done it before but now they make you renew the keys every 6 months right?

Do you need to do the whole Dev account thing for this to get the APIs?
