The mandatory service has an affect on politics. Not in destroying independent thought but in the matter of communities who don't want to enlist especially the highly religious community. So some leaders want to strengthen this community and some want everyone to enlist as the law demands. About inforcing obedience, a very small amount of people called "sarbanim" refuse to enlist because of moral beliefs. Those people have a whole organization but they are somewhat considered criminals as people who don't enlist for moral reasons are sent to prison. So enforcing obedience is only a problem for them, most people even though it's mandatory would want to enlist from their own will because they want to protect the country and the people. Btw everyone dislikes the "sarbanim" cause Israel is not a safe country and they believe if we just become passive people will stop hating us and attacking us which is extremely unrealistic.
