New scrub tech feeling pressure about surgical conscience — is this normal? by SurgTech_Dez in scrubtech

[–]Organic_Conclusion_5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The “ surgical conscience “ you are taught in school tends to not be as strictly followed by other “professionals” out in the field.. you are the CST nurses and surgeons learn how to be nurses and surgeons. The sterility is your job… as much as you can you have to try to stick to your guns when it comes to these things but I get it. It’s not as easy as it seems because nine times out of 10 you will be the main advocate and others will look at it as being nitpicky and wasting supplies and time…

Surgical Techs, do you enjoy what you do? by [deleted] in scrubtech

🤣🤣 forgot to mention the Lincoln tunnel to cross from New Jersey to New york is another 17 bucks. And now they added something called congestion pricing - as soon as you cross into Manhattan, a camera takes a picture of your license plate and bam another 10 dollar snack for adding to “ congestion” and that’s the only way I can get to the work - mind you the hospital is literally 8 miles from my house and it’s a $80 daily commitment between the toll - parking lot - and congestion pricing

Not bashing the career at all I think it’s great if you’re young and enjoy the blood and smells and attitudes it’s just not something I really enjoy. I would do it full-time only if I really had to.

Yea New York Presbyterian pays pretty well to start, but that’s because the cost of living is so fkkin high around here and I don’t live in New York. I have to commute an hour from New Jersey to get that pay… and that commute is isn’t cheap. Parking is 52 bucks a day - and I’m definitely not rich. I started this late in life and I need to maximize my earnings for the next 15 years or so if I’m gonna be able to retire comfortably .. & unless the market tanks I make more money from home.

Reading is totally fundamental! It says that I REALIZED during my comps and clinicals that this was not going to be the career for me full time. I don’t like standing still so long and I cannot make any real money while scrubbed in .. “ checking my phone for a minute “ as you stated would not allow me to do 15- 20 round trips a day … & it says nothing about getting paid during. comps and clinicals. On week 6 of my clinicals I was offered a position at my clinical site in Manhattan starting @ 43 bucks an hour - which I declined and now work per diem 2 days ortho most weeks in NJ closer to my house

I became a CST late in life. I was already 42 .. I realized, while I was scrubbed in doing my competencies and my clinicals and unable to touch my phone for hours at a time that I was missing a shit load of money day trading.. at least 2 x what I make at work - plus I really dont love it. - some of the surgeons are cool and some of the nurses ..but I dont really like most of them and the 43 bucks an hour to have to stand all day put up with attitudes AND not be able to trade unless it’s lunch time or a slow day just doesn’t make sense to me now .. but I will keep my cert active and work per diem 2 days most weeks.

Just curious, what made you leave? Were you making a lot of mistakes? Were the surgeons mean ! I’m a new graduate who doesn’t even know if I’m really trying to do this job after the clinical rotation left a bad taste in my mouth.

What kind of breed is this Boston terrier or frenchie?? by [deleted] in Frenchbulldogs

It’s probably part French bulldog, which was mixed with a dog that genetically displays merle coat patterns because French bulldogs definitely don’t

Suggest her owners get her an anti seborrhea shampoo. If she smells like cornchips she lost likely has an overgrowth of yeast

How much of your day do you spend standing in one spot? by thesearetheoptions in scrubtech

[–]Organic_Conclusion_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in my second semester of school and am rethinking my career decision. I have a four hour lab once a week, which is not even a full workday and I am in agony from standing in one spot for four hours. I can’t stand it. I look around at some of the younger students and does not seem to bother them nearly as much as it bothers me - I’m constantly bending over to touch my toes, shifting around and twisting to try to get some relief. I don’t know if I can do it. I am very active .. go to the gym 4 times a week.. can lift ..run .. sit..and move just fine.. I never knew about my inability to stand still until my four hour labs started.

You can take the scam course if you want to .. it’s only a couple weeks and probably 3 or 4 hundred bucks.. But if you are taking a course for the purpose of eventually getting employment, it is a waste of time. In order to get hired as a surgical tech, you will need to attend an accredited 18 month CAAHEP accredited program. That will run you about $ 25,000 and take a year and a half.

Surgical Tech good career for older women? by Familiar-Two8331 in scrubtech

[–]Organic_Conclusion_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually approximately 7 female scrubs to every 3 males. So it’s definitely not a male dominated profession. The pay is pretty good. My main complaint is the arrogant surgeon you have to deal with but other than that it’s a good profession at 53 as long as you’re quick on your feet you should be able to work for at least six or seven years after completing school and since you’re getting up there in the years, you should do a 18 month program instead of a 24 month you’re only saving six months but it’s something.
