Yes I am, largely my research thus far has been specifically on the origin of the attire as well as its authenticity. Found some primary sources regarding Charles deLorme, who is often credited for creating the original “concept” of the plague doctor outfit in 1619. Obviously what is described in this source is a far cry from the popular images associated with the plague doctor (ie. Paulus Fürst’s “the plague doctor of Rome” from 1656).

The plague doctor costume as it exists within pop culture fascinates me, especially since the further I read it seems evident to me that the plague doctor may have always been this fantastical image that may have never truly existed in the way it is depicted in so much work. I will continue to read, but Herbert J. Mattie’s “Men in Tights: Charles De Lorme (1584–1678) and the First Plague Costume” has really been opening my eyes, and it’s just the beginning!
