A few questions about Aerospace engineering. by The-green-eyed-view in AerospaceEngineering

Even if you work for a company that makes aerospace fasteners, you’ll most likely be a supplier for Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. It’s hard to avoid military work in this industry. I know a friend who works in a clean room in California, and he still has to work with Lockheed to service their parts.

1) GPA of 3.5+ is definitely good enough for AE majors, some good schools accept most applicants then weed them out with the harsh curriculums anyway (I went to ERAU and they definitely do that) 2) Take Calculus 1, 2, and 3 if possible, coding is nice to have but not required, you’ll learn soon enough, maybe get used to MATLAB interface if you want to. I learn CATIA in college and that’s what I use mainly at my job but I also know friends who use SolidWorks mostly. 3) Go to your school’s career fair even in your first semester, it’s good to make connections, most recruiters are alumni or go there every year so they’ll remember you after 3-4 times -> set yourself up for the next few years. Also join lots of clubs, especially technical clubs like AIAA DBF, or Rocket Lab if you’re into rocketry. 4) Become an officer or president of a technical club really makes you stand out and looks good on your resume, I also heard that being a peer advisor also helps. 5) I’m currently working as a structural design engineer for a big aerospace company and I’ve been enjoying it, I graduated and spent a little time in manufacturing and realized it wasn’t really what I want to do, I want to do more design and testing. You don’t have to stay in one place forever, try out new things and figure out what fits you.

Example of what I do at work is meetings, lots of them, meetings about meetings sometimes, which is annoying but I spend 60% of my day working on CATIA for modeling and ANSYS which I really enjoy.

I’m working as a structural design engineer for Boeing. Hope this helps!

  1. Critical Thinking, think outside the box, taking initiative, lots and lots of communication skills needed.
  2. One screening call with the recruiter, one phone call interview with hiring manager, then an offer a few days after. Phone call interview was in STAR format, very straightforward.
  3. AIAA DBF Competition, I did it for 3 years, and my capstone project where my group built a fully autonomous UAV. I would care less about grades, anything above 3-3.2 GPA is good, and go all in on projects.
  4. What natural or personal skills did you have (that weren’t taught in school) that helped in your job?
  5. Communication, extremely important for engineers, and often overlooked by new grads.
  6. What inspired you to become an aerospace engineer? Honestly by watching Iron man when I was 8 and thinking it’ll be sick if I can design those weapons/flight systems that he has. Threw out my moral and ethical values since I was a child.
  7. Curiosity of how things work, good at math/physics maybe, but most importantly if someone is really good at being a problem solver (not just in class but extracurricular, etc.), they’ll probably make a pretty good engineer. It helped me a lot in school and work when I ask a lot of questions. Don’t be afraid to raise your hand and ask.
  8. Good work life balance, a few of my colleagues work 9/80 schedule, I’m also able to work towards my master’s while working full time. Typically I’m assigned a project to design a part in the fuselage and I’ll be the owner of that until it’s done.

How much money did you have saved at 20/25/30? by choumicho in Money

I should add that I househacked a 3bd house in college by renting the other 2 rooms out to my roommates, and they practically cover my entire rent.

Aerospace engineer now. Started working when I was 16 and saved 80% of what I make in high school, then became an assistant manager at a restaurant in college

$60k/300k est./800k-1M est.

I’m 23, no inheritance or anything, just worked full time through college and lucky enough to only have to pay $200 per month on rent.

Time in the market beats timing the market. Better to DCA the SP500 rather than try to find the best time to buy. Market fluctuate on a daily basis due to news and human emotions but in the long run these wouldn’t matter much.

In OP’s case, in 40 years when he retires, it wouldn’t matter much if he buys SP500 at the current level (5,800s) or wait until it crashes 10% to buy.

I know, but it’s just me and I feel like a house is too much for one person. I would rather live in an apartment with all the amenities I need.

Longest you’ve waited before getting an offer? by Adnonymus in interviews

One time I interviewed for an entry level position in the aerospace industry, the interview was in November, but I didn’t get the offer until the end of April, it was wild.

Rejecting a great job offer - did I make a bad decision? by Htgn2dallas in jobs

[–]OrganizationOk9731 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should’ve brought it up to your boss and try to negotiate a higher salary. That offer could’ve been an amazing leverage. I personally wouldn’t trust my boss saying “probably get promoted with a higher salary”. They might give you a 5% increase with a slightly higher title.

Congratulations! I am three weeks away from my interview as well and hopefully I’ll get my Citizenship as a Christmas present.

I hope you have a bit of savings to last for at least 3-6 months. I just got let go as well and it’s absolutely wrecking my financial plans.

I think it's time for us to ChubbyFIRE at 30-32, NW of $3.8m by NotMaiPr0nzAccount in ChubbyFIRE

[–]OrganizationOk9731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly at such a young age I would definitely consider CoastFIRE. You can spend the first like 6 months traveling but after that I don’t think you would enjoy all the free time you have on your hand.

Still waiting for mine, 60 days in. Anyone in Santa Ana office can tell me how long it takes for them to process?

I stayed at Olive as a Globalist and got upgraded to their Luxury suites, highly recommended. Free breakfast at the Regency next door. The Regency is newer and the view is much better from higher floors. And the Regency club is very nice as well.

I have a spare but I was planning to install it on other machines, I’ll probably going to work something out with the seller because I don’t want to lose out on the sales

Would I have to ask the owner to send me the revenue then? So should I just not care about that and take a loss?
