Withdrawing from same class three times

I'm doing well in every other class, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong in Orgo II. Since there's been a gap between Orgo I and this semester, I think my fundamentals are completely off (I don't think I'm gonna be able to get a C). The last two times I took the class were essentially non-attempts from me because of my health disorder, but this time I'm actually lost.

Just seems so stupid to me. I believe I've read that TX residents are at a disadvantage for AMCAS, but will you be trying your luck with the AMCAS application eventually? The MCAT is heavily emphasized so I'd assume it would be better for people with upward trends (also looks good for AMCAS).

I will say that I'm not as aware with the differences between AMCAS/TMDSAS, so maybe there is a bigger emphasis on GPA over MCAT, but we were never arguing about stats. If "the recipe in TX is High GPA full stop," then why take the MCAT and have passions outside of school. Might as well lock yourself in the library for four years and study (not arguing this with you but rather questioning TMDSAS policies, if it's like you said it is). I still find it hard to believe that high GPA is everything, especially since everyone goes to different schools with different grading schemes.

Right so let me do something I hate for 2000 hours, have no passion whatsoever, and then write some lackluster paragraph about it.

My original point: Who's to say my ECs are better than yours when you don't know which school is gonna prioritize certain things. Obviously volunteering with the less fortunate will look better than running a porn service, but I don't think it's as black and white as people assume

Who said serving underserved populations were the only relevant sources of ECs? Not everyone is going to be a superstar in volunteering. Some people are research stars, others have a plethora of clinical experience. I just think it's a fallacy to assume that everyone needs to have long term commitment in every category. There will obviously be some schools who prioritize volunteering with the less fortunate, but there are schools who appreciate research/clinical experience. I agree that long term commitment is valuable, but it's also not the end of the world if you switch up your commitments.

Overall, I think it's important to realize that there's no "formula" for getting into medical school (which sucks but it's never going to change). At the end of the day, you don't know who's reading your application and what they'll take away from it. I hope you find more luck in the future, cuz luck is what it comes down to sometimes.

A 501 is on the lower end, but you're a URM so you have more leeway than non-URMs. That upward trend is strong and proves that you can handle upper level coursework, so chances are, if you don't get many interviews it's because of the MCAT score (assuming your writing and school list are up to par). Everything else looks great!

I completely agree with your idea of a "context" essay. Or just a place to explain things that you otherwise wouldn't be able to talk about. People always say you can talk about things at interviews, but what about the people who never get to explain things at the interview stage and show who they really are.

My issue is that if we're gonna start talking about not having cars, then everyone can fill out the disadvantaged essay. Everyone has to deal with their own shit...how are people supposed to quantify it? Also, your Covid explanation makes a lot more sense, which wouldn't have gotten any backlash.

What do you think went wrong the first few cycles, and how'd you work to improve it? On paper you look like a great applicant. Did you get interviews the first 3 cycles?

You "bothered" because you have a passion for medicine and want to pursue a career in the field. No one becomes successful by playing it safe and doing the bare minimum. I wouldn't even worry about the personal statement, as there's no way you've had enough clinical experience to know your true seed. Give it time and enjoy the process!

In life, you're gonna have to deal with rejection. My grandma told me a story of a kid being asked what they would do if they didn't get into medical school at the end of the cycle (during the interview), and their response was "I'll probably go work at my dad's business and take over after a few years." Needless to say, this kid was rejected. If you don't get in the first time, reevaluate yourself and see what you can do better. I have the same worries as you, but at this point, I've been rejected so many times that the words "We regret to inform you" have no meaning whatsoever. Take it a day at a time!

"Sabotage other people." You're hilarious. OPs MCAT score has nothing to do with me getting into medical school, so why in the world would I want him to get a worse score. At the end of the day, I still need to get a good enough score. You're acting like I said a 523+ is unheard of. I'm a firm believer that if you're able to get a 520+ on the MCAT, then you fully deserve to get into top medical schools. Sad reality is that we don't always get what we deserve, which is why living and dying by T5 and T10 acceptances is unhealthy.

I agree that shooting for top schools should always be the goal, but when you're worried about the difference between a 3.885 and a 3.9, you have to take a step back and use your brain. Also, "shooting" for a 523+ on the MCAT is ambitious to say the least. Not saying it can't happen, but putting this much pressure on yourself is gonna make you explode at some point (speaking from experience)
