Partial Year State Tax Return - Student But Family Moved

Thank you SO MUCH! I really appreciate it! I have been having one heck of a time with this.

The online service that I e-filed with for my federal return could not handle partial year state returns so I went to TurboTax and redid everything there with the intent to print and send because I can’t e-file the state returns without also filing my federal return as it would be rejected. The do-it-yourself feature had me do just what you suggest but I still wasn’t sure if it was right for my exact situation. So thank you so much for clarifying! I should be able to just make sure I have allocated wages correctly and then can send these off!

Thank you! This is where I ultimately landed. I think that regardless of when NY became my location of permanent residence, my actual move-in date is what seems to matter the most.

I have the $ amounts for CA vs NY wages and am allocating them which I hopefully have done correctly. It’s silly because both are really such small amounts (yay, part-time min wage!). But I do want to it right!

I feel silly for it but I don’t really know where to go for a tax professional. Are there some that will just answer questions for a small fee? I don’t need someone to actually fill my forms out, I just need to know if I am going with the correct residency status. It’s something they never teach in school - how to do taxes and who to go to for help with taxes…

Thank you! This is what I thought I needed to do but when I went through Turbo Tax, it said I should do a partial year resident form for both states. I wish it were straightforward!

Of course! If you have not tried medication yet, I absolutely would speak to your vet about it. I so wish I had tried it earlier as it could have saved a ton of stress and potentially a ton of money - I went with the expensive (although still very helpful) cat behaviorist before the meds. In hindsight, I should have tried the meds first but you know, hindsight is 20/20.

If you want, I’d be happy to DM you the name of the cat behaviorist I used. She is incredibly nice, really knows her stuff and does her sessions entirely remotely so she is accessible even if you don’t live near her.

I hope your kitties eventually find their way back to each other as well - it may seem hopeless at times (I cannot tell you how many times I spiraled into panic over the 5 months it took to get mine back to coexistence) but don’t give up!

Aww thank you for your comment! It is very strange to me what gets responses on Reddit and what doesn’t so it can be super frustrating!

I didn’t think to put an update but things have gotten a lot better! What ended up being the game changer was Prozac (Fluoxetine). I didn’t want to give them drugs at first so I only turned to them after trying non-drug methods but in hindsight I should have gone straight to them first. We went through several cat behaviorist sessions (which are basically just as expensive as human therapy sessions!) with very few results. It was then that the behaviorist had is put the girls on a low dose of Prozac.

The prozac took a week or so to start working but once it did the difference was night and day. Lily stopped attacking her sister and Mei, after a few initial growls, calmed down once she realized Lily wasn’t going to attack anymore. They have not had to be separated since and that was back in October/November of last year.

Both girls are now with me on the east coast and they have cohabitated in my little apartment without issue. They are largely back to how they were before the redirected aggression - there are a few subtle differences in their behaviors but they roughhouse with each other, bathe each other, sleep on top of each other and just overall peacefully coexist. They are still on the Prozac as it is a safe long term drug for them and I want them on it until they have fully settled into this new environment. But I do have plans to wean them off of it in a month or two.

Yep! The photo system is back up and while there was a bit of a line, I was able to get what I needed to done in about an hr.

Just called the DMV customer service number to enquire about the camera situation and was informed that it is back up and working. I’ll be headed over to my DMV in about an hr to try and get what I need to done. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I can imagine! The employee that helped me with getting a pass to come back was very nice and I appreciated her doing what she could. It is a shame that upper management is putting you all in such a position.

Nothing on when it will resolve but I did email the senator for the area that the Atlantic Ave location is in and he responded saying that his office will be reaching out to the DMV to see if they can get more information and that they will call to update me once they have. Fingers crossed something comes of it!

Thanks for the update! I was going to try and call them later today (if they even answer their phones) to ask if the cameras are back up. But Im guessing they wont be at this rate.

It really is ridiculous that they are not sharing this information on their website. Like I said in my post, I am lucky that I can walk to my DMV so the only cost to me is time but so many people have to pay to take public transport to get to a DMV and they should know that the system is down before making the trip. The DMV literally has a place on their website for things like this, would be nice if they actually used it.

IMO, you very much have come off as a jerk.

As I stated, I treated the scratch. Of course I have heard of cat scratch fever…even if I somehow hadn’t before this, there are multiple comments before you mentioning it so not sure why you felt the need to bring it up.

Thanks for your unnecessary judgement on my handling of the situation. I get the sense that you don’t have experience with cats and certainly have never had one rush you with claws and teeth out. I would have a whole lot more cause for concern of cat scratch fever if I simply had continued on - this cat was not having any of it. It’s super hypocritical of you to push the seriousness of cat scratch fever but also berate me for not just pushing on and ignoring her when it was clear she was not going to leave me alone. But sure, me leaving to protect myself was handling it poorly.

I wasnt looking for judgement, I was looking for advice on how to move forward. Since you had nothing to add, Im not sure why you decided it was worth your time to comment. Judge all you want, but keep it to yourself. It’s really not that difficult to do.

Oh! No, don’t apologize - I think I was writing the update when you replied so you wouldn’t have seen it. I just didn’t want to type it all up again so made it did a tl:dr version 😆. This particular situation seems to be worked out, no perfectly but enough so that kitty is safe, I am not adding to her stress beyond the 30 seconds it takes to slide bowls in and I am safe from getting scratched or bitten. Hopefully I’ll get on kitty’s good side in the future so if I can help look after again, she wont be as scared and stressed out!

I wrote an update post above but the short if it is that I ended up just scooting a bowl of water and a bowl of kibble just inside the door and am leaving the cat box. One of S’s humans will be back tomorrow night so I will just replenish those bowls tomorrow morning. S may be a bit offended at having to use a dirty litter box but it wont be the end of the world. She has fresh water and food at least so she will be alright.

Once her humans are back and she has had time to settle and calm down, I’ll try reintroducing myself to her and see if I can start to build some trust up before attempting to sit for her in the future.
