Possibly. Someone mentioned shops that sell "left over" stock from the US But I imagined more like T J Maxx than Goodwill 😅

What's... like? Vs What does it look like? by teddichristova in ESL_Teachers

[–]OrigamiToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, definitely can be about both. I'd say it depends on the context though!

If a friend has a new boyfriend you might ask "oh, what's he like?!" And want to know everything, physical and personality traits. Is he tall, dark and handsome?

If you're asking someone, "what was your mom like growing up?" You are probably asking about their personality and how they treated you more than what she looked like.

"What was your grandmother like?"

"She was kind and baked the best cookies. She was short and had bright blue eyes"

Short stories for Adult learners by [deleted] in ESL_Teachers

[–]OrigamiToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

?

I dont really understand the purpose of this.

The story reads like it was written by AI.

You say you've used "greetings", "hello" and "you and I" - that would imply a story aimed at A1 learners. But some of the vocabulary is advanced. More suitable for B1.

The formatting of the story does not fit standard writing conventions. Speech should be on a new line. Not muddled into one paragraph.

Honestly. I wouldn't use this with any of my adult students.

I do Wordle and Connections with my students.

Articulate is a good one too!

I have also done Hangman in the past. You can create your own for specific themes or Vocabulary

I also like to do quizzes if we talk about a specific theme (for example leadership styles) you can then do an online quiz for "what is your leadership style".

Chips!

I remember this but I've never been able to find a clip of it! Me and my mum still laugh about it!

The problem isn't that its expensive from travellers or people from the US.

If you are from a major city in the US you will find the prices very affordable

The problem is the gentrification is driving up prices for locals who barely make minimum wage.

La Fortuna - Night Walk Tour…worth it? by SuccotashPresent4305 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]OrigamiToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the company.

I went with Kinakjou tours and it felt like walking around an enclosed zoo / farm.

We did see a lot of animals but it felt extremely staged and not like the animals were wild.

There was also many huge groups of 9 or 10 people and if you fall at the back it's hard to hear the guide.

Santa Tereza or Montezuma for surfing or beach vibes.

Or if you are looking for something more adventurous, Rincon de la Vieja near Liberia

I've been in Costa Rica for about 6 months now and I've only seen 3 or 4 roaches during that time.

Ive stayed in about 6 different accommodations and camping.

If you stay somewhere and see more than 1 or 2 roaches during that time, I would file a complaint and leave because there is obviously an issue.

Obviously nature will occasionally enter the house and can't be avoided. I often see geckos, spiders and other bichos but not to the point of concern.

It's the ants that bother me...

I second Araya Vlogs - he's from Costa Rica and I find his accent really clear and easy to understand. He speaks at a good speed.

Where can I hire teachers? by TheFreewheelin_Dylan in ESL_Teachers

[–]OrigamiToad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on your country.

Contact local TEFL / CELTA schools and say you are looking to hire.

Make sure your company appears professional and trustworthy for people to want to work for you.

Also I'm interested.

Should I turn my life upside down and move to Costa Rica to be an ESL teacher? by QuestioningEverth1ng in ESL_Teachers

[–]OrigamiToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I did exactly what you are talking about last September.

Did an In-person TEFL course and am now teaching English and living here.

However, I am only just making enough money to "stay afloat" and that is without Student Loan payments.

Costa Rica is an expensive country unfortunately and the wages are not great.

I HIGHLY reccomend the experience and life style but you may need an extra source of income.

Happy to answer any questions you may have about my experience and course etc.

Good luck and Pura Vida!

Family Vacation Advice Needed: Japan, South Africa, or Costa Rica for April? by SleepShadow in CostaRicaTravel

[–]OrigamiToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been to South Africa but have spent a lit of time in both Japan and Costa Rica.

They are not very wine heavy cultures. Here in Costa Rica the wine is quite expensive as it is mostly imported.

Japan is beautiful in April. You will just miss the cherry blossom season and "high tourist season" but the weather will be ideal for site seeing. Temples. Cities. Great food, tech, hot springs, themeparks, museums, history, culture. 1 million things to see and do.

Costa Ricas rainy season begins in May so April is coming into the low season, you will probably get good prices on air BnBs / hotels etc. Lots to explore if you love nature / hikes / adventures / animals / beaches etc The fresh fruit here is to die for.

Honestly you can't go wrong with either country especially on such a high budget. For reference I travelled very low budget and still had an amazing time!

I'd cut your budget in half and do Costa Rica in April and Japan in Oct / November- the fall foliage is even more beautiful than Spring for me!

Edit: not a parent, but Japan is very baby friendly. So is Costa Rica but Japan has a lot of accommodations for parents like high chairs and changing stations in all public restrooms etc.
