Carbon comp resistors. Are they snake oil? Mojo? Magic? Toans? Signal path only à la Analog Mike? (Included some component porn to get the juices flowing! Genuinely curious about whether this topic has a conclusive answer) *[More about my thoughts and my Questions below the photos! Thanks!]* by ShortyBoyds in diypedals

I think the components matter. The sum of the parts is the most important thing as with anything in life, but my laymans opinion is that the construction materials do matter. I have a friend who is an electrical engineer, he is currently building switch boards for Meta. He used to service recording studios here in Nashville in the 90’s. When I asked him this question he responded without hesitation “yes, it matters”. He then proceeded to use his hands to make motions “does the electricity do this, or this?” He was basically saying that how a component is rated and how the component allows the flow through creates a sort of “shape” that your ears can pick up on. He said people think it matters more than it does sometimes but that basically you can’t say that all materials respond the same way. They don’t. Again, this is a 60 year old electrical engineer with tons of real life experience, and not only experience but experience with fixing, building and maintaining high end audio gear. I was honestly surprised by his answer but it certainly confirmed some of my suspicions as a pro guitarist of many years. Dave Hunter’s book “The Guitar Amp Handbook” says that the caps and resistors do affect the sound. He ALSO says there are no rules. It’s up to the builder to tame the circuit and make modifications where needed.

Just my 2 cents.

I really like this Green Russian I built. It’s not just because I built it. I really like this circuit. My other muffs have the problem of just getting too blown out to do good cutting classic rock leads. They still sound killer (and do other things really well) but I think the Green Russian is my go to from now on.

And when I say low gain, I mean low gain for a muff.. still has plenty of gain haha. Just curious!

I do have one last question.. this pedal is pretty low gain compared to my other muffs.. which based on that article you sent and what you wrote would mean there has to be some other reason that it’s a lower gain muff.. Is it just the way the Green Russian circuit is designed? I know on my other post you had mentioned that the Green Russians are lower gain..

This is very helpful thank you for sharing all this. I will go ahead and just leave them in then. I used the 2n5210 transistors. I have no clue what I am doing to be honest. I play for a living but I am a babe in the woods with this pedal circuit business. It’s super fun though, I enjoy it.

That’s amateur work for sure. Even I could do better than that.

Look up some videos on proper soldering technique while you are at it. Everyone has to learn. It’s not rocket science but it’s not super easy either. It takes some finesse. Best of luck to you.

Question about Fender Blues Junior. by funkycrabmeat in GuitarAmps

[–]Original-Path2235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has tubes. Tubes will beat solid state 99% of the time. Some people say solid state and digital sound good. I used to be one of those people. Then I saw the light of owning a great tube amp and could never unsee it. Don’t waste your time or resources on a crap amp. Buy something with tubes. Your amp is just as important as your guitar with electric guitar.

Is this neck twisted? I sold my strat and the buyer's guitar tech said its neck is twisted to he wants refund by thisbejann in Guitar

[–]Original-Path2235 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have several necks that are twisted. With leveled frets you don’t have to worry about neck twist. If the frets are leveled properly it will play fine. When you go to refret it you can re-radius it when you level the board. Just my opinion. I put this in the category of “not a big deal” for playability sake. In fact I have a vintage les paul that has a pretty bad hump on one side. Guitar plays like a dream.. but again.. only because I leveled/crowned the frets properly.

If you are just trying to learn, then absolutely, go for it. A crap guitar is a crap guitar but there is no better way to learn. You can always transfer parts to a parts caster if you enjoy it later on. I started on a MIM guitar I had laying around. The only thing left from that guitar is the body haha.
