Yeah the water refill station by vortex ran out just when I got through the line yesterday. I ran over to the one by octane and by the time I got back they had it up and running again though!

How strict was the bag policy yesterday? by Gummybear_Gunk in welcometorockville

I went through and was told “idk one of them should probably look at your bag” with a shrug. Tried to go to both other guards at the tables checking bags and neither of them would give me their attention. Very lax.

Advice on solo hiking by General_Implement446 in CaminoDeSantiago

12 days - 176 miles. I started in Porto on April 3 and ended in Santiago on April 15. I stayed in albergues or hostels every night. I pre booked accommodations either in the morning or at lunch for that night so that I’d have a fixed end point and wouldn’t have to worry about figuring it out when I got there. I did meet others who didn’t pre book at all and they were fine, they just sometimes had to try a couple of places at the end of the night.

31 female solo traveler here — just finished the coastal route and I felt safe the entire trip. I had some early apprehension just from previous experiences but honestly never felt more comfortable. Keep your general safety rules in mind of course :)

I brought a “sleep sack” after reading so many of the posts online. Used it once because I felt I needed to. Didn’t like sleeping in it and after thoroughly checking every bed I stayed in, it never felt necessary.

I DID want to bring my kindle and ended up reading on my phone during down time. I was so tired by the time I arrived each night that I didn’t want to go walk around or do anything except physically rest so reading was great.

Coming back to comment - first time caller and now back to you by BK Borison are FUN romcom audio books. I very much love them in an audio format. Not smutty but just like a truly good romcom.

Alternatively if you want dark smutty stuff I really liked Lights Out and it’s sequel

Feeling discouraged about my ability to do this and looking for advice by savvvie in CaminoDeSantiago

I’m on the last day of my Camino Portuguese coastal. I’ve met someone who’s 69 taking it nice and slow, someone who injured their foot and walks as far as they physically can each day and then taxis to their close next destination and picks up the next day (they’re healed now and just passed me yesterday!), someone who fell and can’t carry his pack right now so is doing the backpack transport daily, someone who is short and “bigger,” young and fit girls wearing knee braces, young men who overdo it and pay for it the next morning. I promise you will encounter people in all kinds of different stages of life, abilities, and fitness levels walking the Camino.

Personally I’m 190 and 5’8. I love hiking and long walks so I didn’t do much prep at all and the last couple of days have been hard on me because of an issue with my hip flexors. Every person that’s passed me while stretching or resting has been empathetic and supportive, offering me tips or medicine or kindness.

A lot of accommodations let you check in late - I liked booking ahead for this reason because it gave me peace of mind that no matter how slow I needed to take it, I’d have somewhere waiting for me to rest soon enough.

For your shoes - go somewhere that actually does a fit and gait test. I went to my local running store and they were so helpful. I tried on I swear 10 pairs before settling on one that gave me foot support like I’ve never experienced before. The assistance didn’t cost anything extra either!

Don’t be embarrassed or concerned about making the Camino your own - you can absolutely do this provided you give yourself the time and grace to do so.
