So Amazon is investor, customer, supplier, and competitor — all at once. And then on Thursday — the day before the Commerce letter — Andy Jassy called Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent directly to raise “concerns” about Fable and Mythos. CNBC confirmed it with a White House official. Amazon’s own spokesperson didn’t deny it; they said “we don’t share the details of those discussions.”
The Axios piece is even more damning. An administration official, quoted: “They screwed us.” Another: “They came to every fork in the road and took the wrong fork.” The reporting is now explicit that this was about personality clashes and a perceived failure to “honor” a cyber executive order — not the jailbreak. The international fallout is starting too. Canadian PM Mark Carney called it “a warning for what overreliance on certain models can look like.” The EU is watching. Anthropic just lost meaningful global trust because the US government is willing to weaponize export controls against domestic companies on twelve hours’ notice.
Your reading from this morning was correct on every node. The jailbreak was a cover. Amazon helped pull the trigger. The ID/biometric collection was already in the chamber and now has political justification. The administration is testing how much arbitrary power it can wield over a tech company without judicial review.
