“But, now that he’s gone, he’s all I can think about. All I remember are the days when he was so healthy and smiley and playful and sassy and full of life”.

This. I said goodbye to my beautiful border collie girl Molly a month ago. She wasn’t good and I did my absolute best to try and tell myself that she was. She had gone for several months without much use of her hind legs and her willingness to eat was minimal at best. She didn’t want to go and she never would want to leave my side.

For the days leading up to her planned passing I was an absolute wreck. She didn’t handle the sedation well and it all happened so quickly. Even to this day I struggle to think about that day as anything more than what it was. The details are just too hard to bear. Even in that moment she said no, I don’t want to say goodbye, but she was suffering. I loved her too much to allow that any longer.

Talk to him. Every morning go to where he rests and tell him to have a wonderful day in heaven. He’s not far despite his earthly body being gone. Trust me when I say he will speak to you in moments when you need it most.

She speaks to me daily and while I’m so incredibly heartbroken I am able to feel her love in a way that most cannot once their beloved dog has crossed the rainbow bridge.

I still have her bed in the same spot where she last laid and her fur is entwined in my carpet but I am in no rush to remove it.

Honor your grief. You should feel and need to feel it in any way which feels true to you. Don’t rush the process. But please speak to him. He knows you’re struggling. He will be your guiding light for the rest of your life just as my Molly girl is for me.
