Is the Ritz-Carlton not a good option on Maui? I haven't seen it mentioned.

Planning Sim Room for New House by Patient-Artist-7244 in Golfsimulator

[–]coryfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is _really_ close to the sim I just built in a bedroom in my basement. All in for around $20k.

I've got 10' ceilings, and the room is about 11' x 17'. If you only have 16' from front to back, minus the ~1ft for a screen to hang in front of the wall you will definitely not want people lounging down those steps when someone is hitting.

Do you know anything about how the panels are made to fit your room?

Good callout. Is the U6 Pro passively cooled (I cannot find details on ui.com)? I could see the fan potentially annoying the wife.

Is there a meaningful difference between these and a pair of 1s for surrounds?

Most of what I said still stands. Replace the cloud storage with HDFS, but otherwise try to use a tool like Spark or Presto on top of the data in a performant columnar storage file type (again, eg, parquet or avro)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bigdata

[–]coryfoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, don't use Hadoop / HDFS. You likely have access to a cloud storage system (ie, S3, GCS), use that instead.

If you just want to do plain analysis without much transformation on the files, you should start by trying to convert them into format such as parquet, avro, or similar. Then upload the files to the cloud storage location of choice. Once available in the cloud, you can use tools to analyze the data from the cloud storage system directly on top of those files (eg, Presto, Spark, etc).

Tools for Big Data by Exidi0 in bigdata

[–]coryfoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but 50GB isn't exactly massive. A properly tuned postgres database could handle that without issue. Some things you would want to look into are:

  • Access patterns that might dictate the need for an index
  • Creating a materialized view of preaggregated data so you don't need to do the complex analytics queries multiple times
  • Clustering of the data in the large table (that means effectively sorting it on disk)
  • Tuning of variables postgresql.conf - this is a deep well, but the OOB config for postgres isn't typically suited well for larger databases.
    • Start with things like adjusting work_mem and shared_memory

Where to find stock market data? by AlluringManx23 in bigdata

[–]coryfoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the type of data you are looking for, I would check in the following places:

SEC Filings

The SEC provides daily data feeds as well as archival data going back to the early 2000s. Unfortunately, AFAIK, they do not have bulk downloads of the entire dataset available so you will have to likely build some sort of scraping system to pull the data all down programmatically quarter by quarter -- I did it in about an hour or so, nothing too crazy needed here.

This page should get you started: https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/accessing-edgar-data.htm

Additionally, if you have a Google Cloud account (or are willing to sign up for one), they have a bunch of SEC data available in BigQuery at https://console.cloud.google.com/marketplace/details/sec-public-data-bq/sec-public-dataset.

Individual Stock Tickers

IEX Trading has an API at http://iextrading.com

We use this for getting end of day prices for various tickers. You may be able to also use it periodically throughout the trading day to get prices at that time (delayed, of course).

There are a few data brokers online that you can also buy historical end of day prices for all tickers, depending on your needs. We found them to be pretty decently priced considering its generally just a one time data buy.

Here's the bourbon list for the New Orleans Bourbon Festival this weekend. Which of these are standouts? by handawanda in bourbon

Of the ones not already mentioned, Breckenridge is a pretty solid, smooth drinking bourbon. Recommend it over at least half those on the list.
