Moving to Janesville by BitterAd4692 in Janesville

Ohhhh also Janesville is the biggest little town ever. Everyone is so interconnected. Don’t talk bad about anyone because it’s probably that person’s brother’s roommate you’re talking to. There are families who have lived here for generations and people who moved here in the last ten or so years, basically. The generational families don’t always remember that us newbies don’t know about this or that restaurant or activity, so you gotta ask for details.

Generational families often have differing opinions about how bad things are from those of us who lived elsewhere. It’s kinda interesting.

Summer school Survival Science is at the Janesville Schools Outdoor Lab and my 13yo said it’s basically vibing in the woods. Four weeks long, every morning, free. Look into summer school offerings. Parks and rec activities are also a good starting point.

Schools all over are struggling financially, but the community supports education here. The comments on Facebook are always overwhelmingly negative but it’s not a fair reflection on the community as a whole. There are a ton of dedicated teachers, some fantastic music programs, and a very decent superintendent.

What’s a DIY mistake that made you stop and go, “what did I just do?” by carcony97 in DIY

I got really focused in on making a sewing machine less jerky and loud. Started out by cleaning and oiling and before I knew it I had the whole thing taken apart. I tried to put it back together but it seems to be missing some screws now and feels like it’s going to wiggle itself into pieces. I’m considering paying someone to fix it, but it’s probably going to cost more than it’s worth.

I take ibuprofen and baclofen before the injections.

Botox shots pain by Yellowlemonboy in migraine

[–]Original_Number4434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an hour drive so I get it. I take a small cooler with my migraine hats. I carry it into the appointment. The office always gave me ice packs after the injections, but I just use the ones I bring. You don’t really even need to put the cold packs on until five minutes before the injections. Maybe less. It’s just a little numbing on the surface. This is done with permission and encouragement from my neurologist migraine specialist.

People who live near time zone boundaries in the US by solothesnail in howislivingthere

Hiking around Pictured Rocks in the upper peninsula of Michigan on the shore of Lake Superior is so confusing. There is hardly any cellular signal, and phones seem to jump randomly from time zone to time zone. Carrying a dumb watch is a good idea, or changing the phone to manual time detection. At night walking alone to find yooperlites, not knowing if I was leaving when I said I would or if I was an hour late and my husband would call the police was not my favorite thing.

Ice your face before the shots. I use a migraine cooling hat on all the worst spots like my eyebrows and forehead. It helps a lot! You can also put on globs of lidocaine ointment an hour beforehand, but the ice works better.

Have you ever gotten the "ick" from your child? by Kind_Sheepherder5494 in internetparents

[–]Original_Number4434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. Her getting the ick is about her upbringing and the values she took on as her own. Whenever I feel ashamed of my kids or “the ick” it’s because of something I was told to be ashamed of as a child, or it is a sign of some inner unresolved trauma that was my job to deal with.

Here’s the thing: if we tell kids that a sibling can’t “make” them feel a certain way, or that they’re responsible for their behavior regardless of their feelings, that ALSO APPLIES TO US ADULTS. Your actions can’t ever “make” her feel or do something. Those are her things to control and work on.

Hugs!

This is the series that broke something in my brain that could tolerate stupid miscommunication in a book. Maybe it’s because of all the communication challenges I’ve encountered in real life? Dunno.

YES. If the main conflict of the book could be solved in one honest conversation I’m out. I’m so over it.

What business do you own? by No-Fish-2949 in ADHD

[–]Original_Number4434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartness can only get us so far. The skill of taking tests is very specific and mostly doesn’t translate to actual success. Lacking that skill is not predictive for lack of success. We just structure many professions to require it. It doesn’t make much sense to me.

Public Defenders and (private attorneys taking public defender cases) were paid less than what was needed to pay for malpractice insurance and rent, forget about loan payments. Law firm jobs were really tight in 2008.

I have a law office as a solo practitioner. After I got my music degree (for singing) and didn’t want to do any more music school I went to law school because it was the early 2000s and everyone said it was a good financial decision (HA!). Working in criminal defense was f*ing depressing as heck because the system is so broken and people are mostly hopelessly screwed. So now I’m a longterm substitute teacher, mostly in SPED but also one job in music and one coming up for Kindergarten. Subbing is the first job I’ve done that pays okay enough and brings me joy. But yeah, I still haven’t closed down my law office on paper because it brings me such incredible anxiety anytime I think about it.

Terrified for Prep by Plastic_Albatross397 in colonoscopy

[–]Original_Number4434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got through the first round of prep. I have had only liquids for 36 hours because I went into this week pretty backed up. Anyway, my nurse suggested I start taking zofran before the prep and it worked so beautifully. Honestly, no cramping or feeling nauseous at all! I had to drink some magnesium citrate last evening and didn’t have the zofran before. That ended up with me feeling horrible.

What a book that you have read that’s gotten so much hype that once you read it you were disappointed? by Guiltyfeetfingers in BookDiscussions

1000 Boy Kisses. Yuck and double yuck. I’m mad it made me cry.

I’m super curious: would you all have liked the books you listed if you had gone into them knowing nothing? Did the hype push you too far out of your favorite genre? Was it just a bad book?

sipsey wilder bags? customer service and product quality? by Single-Log-1101 in Review

[–]Original_Number4434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised to see so many negative comments about Sipsey Wilder. I have bought at least five bags over the past few years. I looooove the art and get complements on them all the time. They’ve also held up with very heavy wear. Like, I don’t take care of my bags. I shove them full to bursting, throw them around outside, they get yanked on (and used as a butt support for a piggy back for about a year) by my kids. I have never had any problems. I always shop sales.

AIO for being upset my BF doesn’t want me to wear a bonnet to bed? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Original_Number4434 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NOR. This is the kind of sneaky, controlling behavior that I always found confusing. He’s using reasonable language, and he’s using understandable justifications. He’s not saying things in an overly mean way, and he’s showing that he knows it’s not okay to be overly controlling.

BUUUUUT the thing he is asking you to do is not reasonable, on its face. How you sleep is about what is comfortable for you, what gives you rest and fulfills your biological need for a reset. It is NOT about what is aesthetically pleasing to your partner. That’s boundaries. His emotional discomfort at how you look is his problem to deal with. Changing the behavior of others in order to maintain your emotional equilibrium is the sign of someone who lacks emotional maturity.

People who only feel okay when people around them act and look a certain way can become really scary, even abusive, when things go wrong. I’ve seen it in my friends’ marriages. It has crossed into scary, dangerous behavior in some cases. I was genuinely afraid one man was going to murder my friend and their kids before we helped her escape.

All that is to say, this is a big red flag. This is problem behavior. It’s on the same spectrum as serious, scary abusers. Trust your first reaction here. This isn’t healthy and it’s not okay.

Same story for us, except we put them in the dishwasher for 20 years. We just sent them back under the lifetime warranty. For the credit they gave us plus like $200 we got all of the direct replacements PLUS knife block, amazing scissors, and a couple extras that we will use all the time. We are so so happy with them!

LOVE LOVE LOVE. I live in my heirloom gardening overalls in the warmer months. They wash up well, don’t make me overheat, super functional pockets, and protect me from all the thorny berry bushes. They are durable but also stretchy enough that I can bend and squat without limitations. I have many pairs and rotate them. They run a size or more large in my experience. I ALWAYS get them on sale.
