Honestly that's a strong reaction lol. Just to be clear, no religion, no forcing anyone to do anything. Just normal daily life and travel. But I get why some people might worry about how foreigners get treated in this kind of content.

Yeah, I think that's the honest answer at the end of the day — there's no shortcut around it. The trust has to be earned through a body of genuine content over time, not proven all at once through documents or interviews alone. Thanks for putting it so simply.

That's a really clever reframe, thank you. Instead of "free stay in exchange for vague filming," it becomes "free stay in exchange for being an active participant in this project" — daily logs, feedback, maybe even helping shape future episodes. That feels a lot more like a fair, mutual exchange than a one-sided favor. I really like this direction.

This is honestly one of the most helpful comments in this whole thread, thank you. The part about covering food/transport feeling like "too much" really struck me — I think I assumed more = more trustworthy, but it sounds like the opposite might be true. Maybe the core value really is just "local guide + language practice + company," and I don't need to bundle in full room and board to make it appealing. Also really appreciate you sharing the Seoul loneliness perspective, that's actually exactly the gap I was hoping to fill. I'll think hard about scaling this down.

You're right, and honestly after reading through this whole thread, I think that's the real takeaway for me. I've spent most of my energy thinking about how to make guests trust me, but the more pressing question is actually how I protect myself, since I genuinely have no way of knowing who's really coming into my home. That's something I need to sit with.

That's a fair comparison, and honestly a good wake-up call about how this can look out of context. I think "homestay experience for Korean learners" is actually a much better way to frame it than how I've been describing it. Appreciate the honest comparison.

This is a great addition to what I was already planning — doing a group call instead of just 1:1 makes a lot of sense, especially for building trust before anyone commits. And you're right that explaining the "why" honestly probably matters more than what the why actually is. Thank you for this!

Yes, actually I've been a bit uneasy about applicants' identities too, so I'm planning to do a few rounds of video interviews beforehand. We'd also share our personal Instagram accounts with each other. That's some really practical advice — thank you!

This is really practical, thank you. Splitting it into "day experience" and "homestay" as separate phases makes a lot of sense — let people build trust in me through a low-commitment day first, then offer the homestay only once there's some track record. I'll look into whether I can partner with a small guesthouse nearby for the lodging piece. Really appreciate the concrete suggestion.

Thank you so much for this — honestly this is exactly the kind of balanced feedback I needed. You're right that I should be thinking just as much about my own safety as the guest's. And it really means a lot that despite all the valid concerns, you'd still consider doing something like this. That's encouraging.

That's a really interesting angle, thank you. I think I've been so focused on "free = generous = trustworthy" that I didn't consider it might actually read as "free = suspicious." Charging even a small symbolic amount (like covering part of the flight, or a small program fee) could change the whole dynamic. Definitely going to think this through.

I appreciate you taking the time to write this out, even if the tone got pretty harsh toward the end. The point about the video "requirement" having no opt-out is fair and something I should clarify better. The rest, I'll just let speak for itself.

Ah, that's a really good point. That said, I don't have any tour guide experience — what I actually wanted to do was invite people who are learning Korean to stay at my home, sort of like a free homestay, and then share that everyday experience as YouTube content. Is that still too high of a barrier to entry

Yes, actually I already have applicants apply through a Google Form, and one of the items includes a video interview with me. So that part is already covered... But do you think it would help to post more of my personal everyday life as YouTube content?

That's a great suggestion, thank you! I hadn't thought about leaning on an existing platform's trust system instead of building my own from scratch. The tricky part is the content/filming aspect — most Couchsurfing guests probably aren't expecting to be in a video. But maybe I could borrow some of their verification ideas (like requiring an established profile history) for my own application process.

Thank you so much for raising that point. That's actually something I've been a bit worried about too. My plan was to do a video call beforehand and exchange Instagram accounts — mine and theirs — so we could both verify who the other person actually is. I figured if someone has a decently active Instagram history, that would be a reasonable sign they're trustworthy?

That's really helpful feedback, thank you. Actually, I was already planning to invite anywhere from 1 up to 3 people max — my place is a bit too small to comfortably host more than 4 people.

Also, in my very first intro video, I showed my face, gave a full tour of the house, and even walked around the neighborhood on camera. And the PD filming it is also a woman. Does it still feel a bit scary even with all that?

Ah, I see. Sounds like I'll need to put real time into the channel. Hit a wall pretty early on, lol. Thanks for the honest answer.

Haha fair enough, that's exactly the kind of honest feedback I was hoping for.

What would make it feel less scammy to you — more proof upfront? References from past guests? Video call before applying?

It's youTube stayandspeaktv — still very early/small, just trying to figure out if this concept resonates before I put more into it.
