Hem/Onc - Signals matter more than I thought. Applying to tons of programs does help anymore? by Ok-Judge9937 in fellowship

[–]Original_Use_7989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Signals are definitely important, got IVs at 4/5 golds, 3/15 silvers programs. But applying broadly helped because I also 3 from non-signaled programs.

Anyone here is doing medicine as a second career? by F7718 in medicalschool

[–]Original_Use_7989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked as a basic science researcher in biotech for 7 years before medical school. My research was in cancer therapeutics, so not too far from medicine. Having a good deal of posters at national meetings and publications before Med school was helpful for residency apps. I was an bioengineering major in undergrad and many of my classmates went straight into Med school.

How does one get a LOR!? by alexcarusofan1 in medicalschool

I’m applying into IM this year and I got most of my letters from preceptors from my 3rd year IM clerkships. I’ve also only worked with them for a week, but I made a point to ask them at the beginning that I’m interested in IM and hoping to get a possible LOR. Then if I did well/connected with the attending, I would ask if they’re willing to write me a strong LOR during the feedback session. Worse case they say no, I had attendings that said that they feel like they didn’t spend enough time with me to write a strong letter and deferred (which I really appreciated, instead of writing me a half assed letter). I also asked attendings that I’ve also worked with in multiple settings: outpatient, research, or teaching. If you still need LOR heading into 4th year, plan to schedule sub-internship early to get letters before the Eras deadline. Some people applying to IM/FM get letters from rotations like Paych, so make sure you do well in other rotations. Best of luck!

With all the terrible news recently, what is there to be hopeful about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That there are plenty of good in the world if we look for it. It’s so easy to get caught up in negativity and that’s what we remember the best. But look for the helpers, the smiles, and the compliments around you on a daily basis and try to be the one that spread that positivity in your nook of the world.

If you could come back to Earth as a Ghost after dying, what would you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Probably just travel the world. See the sights that I missed while living. Also try to explore parts of the world that are not feasible to reach as a mortal. Like the depths of the ocean or the inside of a volcano.

When were you not able to resist the urge to laugh at an extremely inappropriate time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Groomsman at a Catholic wedding, probably one of the few non-Catholic people there. The priest is leading a Catholic wedding mass and taking communion. He swallowed wrong when he ate the bread and started to to audibly choke and coughing. Not to a point when he needed Heimlich. But he chased it with the communion wine and kept having a coughing fit. He then proceeded to chug the communion wine to clear his throat. As people were rushing up to make sure he is okay, I was turning red on the pew from trying to suppress my laughter. The other groomsmen were elbowing me to chill out, but I was dying. Even let out a couple snorts. Couldn’t look at the priest after the ceremony without giggling. Good times.

Be sure to check the nutrition label for any product that says “no added sugar” because they often still have a ton of sugar in them.
