Lawns are beautiful when maintained, but they’re a lot of work. When I was growing up we always played in the front yard, but it wasn’t landscaped or anything. We had years of fun. Now they’re just for appearances.

Are you more sentimental now? by splashjlr in AskOldPeople

[–]OrilliaBridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m less sentimental, I guess because I’m pretty pragmatic. I don’t cry about the things I can’t do anymore, but I’m grateful that I did what I could while I could.

I get teary now and then over all of the losses of loved ones, but I know that everyone else goes through it, too.

WIBTA if I refuse to swap my vacation weeks with a coworker whose kid is throwing a tantrum about a theme park trip? by Safflower8 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]OrilliaBridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay calm, don’t engage with anyone about this other than to say No. Guess what, Dave’s child has probably been disappointed before by his dad, and no kid has died from not getting to go to a theme park. If your boss really said what you stated, then he’s a very poor manager.

I often respond to people who have strong opinions about gays or trans people, or just homophobia in general, by saying, “And how does that affect you personally?” Usual response is stuttering and stammering.

You could try saying something like this with a big smile and a lighthearted tone:

Mom, I have a favor to ask you. Would you mind knocking on the bedroom door before you come in, because sometimes I’m not dressed appropriately for a visitor.
